Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning...gee, again. The days are just flying by it seems. The sap is boiling once again. Still letting off it's steam and is getting darker and is maybe almost syrup! Starting to taste like it too. I filtered it again this morning because there was a bit of sediment in the bottom after cooling all night. I guess today will be the day to bottle up the first batch...and NO it wont be coming to the bash for a white ellie!

I would, however, like to propose something at the bash. I think it would be fun to have a syrup tasting! Since many of us are making it, I think it would be very interesting to taste syrup made in different parts of the state or even just from different trees. I am wondering what the difference would be? Anybody up for it? Thinking we could pair it up with Jim's Sunday morning pancakes.

Oh gee...I started this post at 9 and I forgot to finish it! Cripes...it's gotta be CRS creeping in on me again! I must have been so excited to see all that fine sunshine out there...yeah, I'll go with that!
Have a good one! TerriO

good sunny morning from the north country,

Public Service Announcement: It's Election Day, while this particular one has not gotten big press, there are a couple of state choices to make, with all of the "outside" interests in WI elections it's good to go vote your mind. Also lots of local choices. (now back to our regular scheduled chicken programming)

raccoons 1 Unk 0 I set the big box trap last night but one of the buggers tripped it without getting in,,,grrrr

the first chicks got picked up yesterday. quite in the basement for a few days, cleaned up that mess and ready for the next

candled the eggs this morning day 15, only 1 clear out of 31 olive eggers,,, busy fertile guys here ,,,,17 of 24 white chants are growing, not so good on the BR's I reported to Gina so she can figure out what's going on with that group

my 2 cents on marking eggs,,I use a pencil on everything but the Marans, watching my e-mail message boards and threads on BYC I find most breeders use a Sharpie to mark these dark eggs since nothing else shows, some even use the new Silver sharpies. These eggs do have extra shell layers so maybe that helps (don't shoot the messenger, just passing on what I have seen and use on dark eggs)

Nice score on the ducks Amy!

those quail are tempting,,,,maybe I'll look for some eggs later when spring actually arrives here

Thanks for the PSA - I also hope everyone exercises their right to vote - there is never an "unimportant" election in my book

Wow I left for the weekend to find that I was 199 posts behind.

Delish.... 100% that's great. 50% that's funny stuff.

Bigfam.....loved your egg story....congrats!

R berry.....25x18 wow! Are you going to put it on a concrete slab?

Jim....last year there was a thread w/ a bunch of people with a list of predators that there geese chased away... Coyote and Fox even...Don't know how much was true.... but, a lot of them had good pics....Very interesting

Judge....Broody....you will know....you just will.

Zeke...as others mentioned...to break a broody keep throwing her off the nest(this should work 98%)....If this does not work put her in a separate cage off the ground(w/ food&water) w/o straw so the cold air can get to her bottom for 3 days...this worked for me on one stubborn one.

Here's one....last year I had a broody (she stopped laying but everyone else wanted to lay eggs for her...) so I just kept collecting and throwing her off.....well she wore me down..I thought well I would let her hatch 6 ......so kept collecting all but those 6 marked w/ a pencil.....It wore of some but not all....I would just remark..no prob......Two weeks into this.... my good friend (whom I give eggs to) called and said his had just cracked one of those original 6 eggs in her frying pan...

.......Broke the broody w/ the cage method.....NOW all broodys are broke or allowed to sit in a Different Coop..........................yeah we still talk...LOL

Congrats to all on the hatches... and the cool Easter pics... For our egg hunt I try to hide the kids SO I did not want pics as evidence

DH is sick again, I was sick yesterday and don't feel good today, but I had to work 11 hours yesterday and luckily I have off till Friday.
Chicks are good, chickens are good...
And I am wondering does anyone want a Blue copper Marans roo and a hen? HE was free, she was 10, I will give them to you as a pair...
Both are about or less than a year old.
Let me know

Of course I voted today! I found out that the husband of the lady who was the ringleader against the changing of the city ordinance is running unopposed for city council. Nice; that should make life interesting since he is one of those thick-headed types who has a mule-like attitude when presented with an opposing viewpoint: no matter how much information you present proving he is wrong.

I will keep you all posted with the results.

Good luck! Just keep trying - you never know!

Evening all, Hope all is well,
Congrats on all the hatching.
I ordered my chicks this morning, I am going through Abendroths in Waterloo, WI going to get them in 2 weeks, so hopefully by the time they grow up a bit, I can put them in the coop without heat. Anyone ever purchase through them?

Dh was asking me a question and I don't know the answer....right now we have a little standing water that is slowly going away in part of the coop. He asked if we should rototill the coop floor of dirt and dig some out and fill with sand that would drain better and allow dust baths etc...what are your thoughts on that?
