Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

We had flurries today. That's it. Nothing stuck. I'm still waiting.

My oldest's b-day is next week. He asked, "Mom? Do you think I'll have snow for my birthday again? I want to go sledding for my party." Now I'm disappointing my children with this "no snow" stuff. What a mean mom I am!

We really do live for snow in my house. Sledding and snowmobiling, and crosscountry skiing. Making snowmen and snow angels. It's the best to go outside at night, with all the christmas lights on, play in the snow. Lay on your back in the snow and just look at the stars. Enjoy the fresh, crisp, air. OOOoohhhhh! I just can't wait. Being patient is NOT my best quality. It's my worst!

I have to agree with you on that one. As much as winter inhibits my outside activities I do love standing outside on a cloudless, moonlit, and very cold winter night and listen to the trees crack and stare at the sky. I feel it's put there just for me! Then back inside to put another log on.

Better check that forecast Fordmommy; they are saying a significant winter storm will develop next week. No idea of the storm track or if we will be getting snow, but it is better than nothing! We are supposed to get some snow on Sunday too, not enough for sledding but enough to make the ground white!

We have about an inch or so of the white stuff in our yard right now and the kids are hoping to have enough for making snow angels tomorrow. The forecast for the area predicted 3-5" tonight which I hope doesn't happen because I'm just not a winter person (cold literally makes me cry) and it'll trigger a snow plow service visit which I haven't really budgeted for this month because of holiday shopping. The kids are hoping to go sledding down the hills at a friend's farm by next week though. Just thinking about it makes me want to throw some logs in the fireplace and get it going!

DrHaHa... a friend of mine already asked me if I wanted to rent a farm next! We started shopping for chicken gear today and we get to go visit them on Sunday.

from Middleton Good luck with your city chickens!!! I love having my little backyard flock!! Looking at first snow for them now, I wonder how that will go over with them.....

Hi fldiver, and thanks for the welcome! We're over in Middleton all the time since my dd has karate lessons there 3x/wk. It's about 15 mins from where we are so we're practically neighbors! I also go to Green Earth over there every now and then to stock up on sprouted flour.

Well, one of these days you have to stop by when you go to Green Earth. I live right near Kromrey Middle School, back yard is a stretch of Pheasant Branch Conservancy...

Cool beans!

How many chickens can you have in Middleton?... I'm already thinking the Madison4 won't be enough come Spring. We're getting Nankins in Jan and a friend will be hatching Ameracaunas in May. We also like OEG bantams and I want a barred Plymouth Rock... Oh my!

I forgot to tell you fordmommy. I really liked your snow dance it made me laugh. I quit laughing then walked out in the kitchen and laughed again. Thanks! Zohbug you just wait and see 2 hens won't be enough. I'm still tossing around the idea of chicks in the spring to offset next years molt for eggs. Or maybe get a rooster and hatch some. And I thought about butchering a few next fall as they will be a year and a half old. But then the thought crossed my feeble mind which of the girls would go? I had no problem with the CC's I didn't like most of them. I'm thinking the girls will meet a natural end. I don't think I can do it. We're way too close. So now I'm thinking maybe 5 new layer poults and [here it comes] maybe just maybe around 10 CC chicks. The idea behind getting multi purpose birds was to have the best of both worlds meat and eggs. The world has turned. It's bad enough worrying about introducing new chicks to the girls but to get CC's again.

We do enjoy the meat, I think it's the best I've ever had, the thought of going back to store bought curls my toes and stomach. So I guess I just talked myself into more CC's. Maybe knowing their meat birds will help me seperate myself from them. It did before. I won't make the same mistake of raising them together that I did this year. So that means [here it comes again] building another coop. Not enough buildings eh Bigzio? Maybe something less permanent for the CC's yet safe for them. I feel for Zohbug! I really do.

Good Frosty Evening to all!
Welcome aboard ZohBug

I'm sure you'll be happy with choosing chickens for a family pet. They really do relieve alot of stress.

I had the dredded frozen water this morning.

I suppose it's time to run out the extention cords, eh?

I picked up 10 bales of straw from a farmer close by. At 1.00 per bale, I was more than happy. It was all he had left for sale. Gosh i wish I would of known he was so reasonable. I would of bought alot more. That's for sure.
It's my favorite bedding during the Winter months.

Dr.H, Maybe when you retire, you can become a traveling coop builder. If you think that's an option, then place me at the top of your list....

Seriously though....It really is a top of the list item for Spring. I would like more light brahmas, black javas, and some peeps from Jim too! I'm thinking 8X16 for the first project. I really hope I can get er done.

Stay safe, and have fun.
