Race Day At Richmond...got your back on this race CC! Could it be?

Oh My, in regards to the daisy dukes at the bash bigfam, I'm really sorry I'm not gonna be makin the fast $20....maybe some other young Bucks would be up for the real cash? Ten years ago, I woulda prolly made some feed money...today you would be payin for me to go away....(that's an idea)

We love and grow the sprouts here...some go for canning dilly sprouts..they are the best and we freeze the balance for different stuff.

Tuff stuff with the little ones...I would just hope that lessons were learned and next time you know what can happen....older hens figure it's "their water, their space, their food, etc.... it's hands down easier to share space with a fence, or waiting til they are the same size to integrate....this stuff happens all the time, and doesn't really need to....big is big...little is little....not mad, just sayin.

I realize that now. i guess I was under the impression that the babies would stay under the mommy and she would protect them. I never imagined they would wander around, only hours old, or that the mama would leave her nest with brand new babies in it. I don't think I will risk doing the broody thing again. I don't think I can trust them again...

Some mamas are good, others not so much. One of my broodies last year chased a hawk away from her babies, and did a great job keeping them all close to her. Another one lost 5/6 in various ways. I probably would not let that one hatch again. You might have better luck with a different hen.

I agree with bl4 I don't think that is nettles, nettles resemble ummm,,hemp,,actually they are related I think. They do create terrible itching,,,,but,,,,chickens love them, they can be consumed as Amy says, and they make a great tea for the garden plants. a google will show you picks of true nettles

Judge I had my first broody this year. It's been the most wonderful experience ever! Those babies are part of the flock and are out free ranging with the rest. The difference was I put momma in a pen in the coop. She was still seen and heard by the flock. that way there wouldnt be an acceptance issue later on. i kept her penned with the babies for 2 wks. After hatch. Then I'd prop the door open so they could come and go. Once momma and babies moved to sleep in the nesting boxes, I closed the pen up. She has been the most perfect momma. She is still taking care of them and they are a couple months old. Very attentive. This chicken didn't have a name. But now she will forever be called Momma.

Don't give up on broodies forever.

Unk, Amy is right.... that is nettle, but it sure does LOOK like just sprouting berry canes! I did a google search on both raspberry plants and stinging nettle.

Nothing exciting happened today. I went to work, chit-chatted with me neighbors, raked out the flower beds, and made dinner. I would like to start taking my plants outside to start hardening them off, but baby steps....

Visiting the ducks tomorrow..... sounds like a plan.

Well, if it was my garden, I would wait until I was dang sure what was what. I would think in a week or so you should know for certain, and of course there is always the touch test!
