Hello and Long Time No See!
Hi One and All, it's been over a month since I've checked in, forgive me for my absence. I finally, FINALLY, got the employment opportunity I've been looking for, so it's been a hectic end of summer. I'm now working fulltime day hours, so good bye night shift, hopefully for ever. Dang near wore my old butt completely out, working all those nights and trying to keep up with the farm and the family during the day.
I'm going to spend some time now getting caught up on the thread...I think there's 50 pages since I've last been here!!! What a prolific bunch this is. Good to see Terri, Becky, BL4, BCC, Fordmommy, the inimitable Doc H and all the rest...
A quick update on the flock...we're averaging about 8-10 eggs a day, and we've got quite an assortment! Greens, blues, light browns and dark browns, all shapes and sizes. Not bad for 13 hens. It's been fun for the girls going into the coop everyday to what's waiting for them. All the hens are laying in the egg boxes, they sure took to them. I carpeted the boxes because I was getting some cracked eggs and with the straw it works like a charm. I've got to get rid of Jerry Lee, he's been going at Mom and the girls in the morning and he's just one roo too many. I've got Elvis II, a beautiful purebred Ameraucana, and he's less aggressive and seems to be gentler with the hens.
Sweet corn season is now officially ended here on the farm as of yesterday, and the chickens and I are already going through withdrawal. That corn was so sweet, juicy and addictive that we call it "crack on the cob"...the chickens are really going to miss it, they've been eating well over a dozen ear a day. Whatever didn't get sold by the end of the day went to their stash, and now they'll be waiting til next year. Scratch just doesn't cut it when you've been eating sweet corn non-stop for 6 weeks.
Although my allergies are now in full swing, gosh I love this time of year. Thank goodness that sticky weather is gone...I could never live down south, I'd end up in a straight jacket.
Now to get reading!
