Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning all..... Well, landed safely... now to answer the big question...how did I sleep. It was rough at first. Thank goodness I took the ambien. Woke up several times during the night wondering what the heck was plastered to my face. lol I do have to say I could feel how the cpap pushed my airways open. I was taking in deeper breaths. I've always thought that I wasn't breathing right. Hard to explain. I'm awake but drowsy a bit..... hang over from the sleeping pill. Would be nice to get off of that but with so much pain at night it's impossible to get to sleep some nights..... one thing at a time. My blood sugars have been much better in the mornings since I started the tiny amount of insulin. 107 this morning. Diet... I mean Life style change...is doing good. I almost flipped out yesterday and said "lets go to town for dinner" after I got the call from the doctor..... doesn't take me much to have an excuse to eat (I know it's obvious) LOL Having my cuppa and waiting for pulm doc office to call to make an appointment. Wondering if I should go to the doc my doc recommended in Milw at St Lukes or try to get in to see ET's pulm. He is so frickin funny....Jokes alot but seems to really be intelligent...... ok, coffee time. Nice to see you back Dr Ha ! CC So sorry for your loss

I was going to mention about the dirty incubators.. most chicken catalogs have a disinfectant made just for that .. I have a bottle of it around here,, unopened,, somewhere..

that Hova bator did not have a turner with it for $119.oo, did it ? you can add another $40.oo or so to the price.. I just want to caution you about those turners.. there is a crank arm on the end of it that breaks off very easily.. I have had them come broken in the box from the supplier.. new trays cost about $7.oo.. I repaired a couple of them, but it is not an easy process..

Re dirty incubators: I meant as far as cleaning styrofoam. If you use bleach or other harsh chemicals, it'll break it down.

No, the hovabater didn't come w/it for the $119. But at the bottom you can add add ons. I was going to add the turner as well as the quail racks. I am also debating on if I actually WANT the auto turner. I can certainly get in there and roll them a few times a day. So IDK. Guess we'll see.

Quote: Some people have the luxury of having a sportsman hatcher where that is all that you do in it.... hatch.... on Day 18 they move the eggs to the "hatcher".
Some people also will have two incubators. One for incubating and another they move the eggs to for hatching. It keeps the incubating bator clean but the hatcher not so much.
But jim on the other hand....are you sitting on the eggs Jim or what are you using for a hatcher ?? LOL JK

good morning, have to do dishes before Annie gets home.. but I have plenty of time before that..
still have to make a potta cuppa..

you can put your claws back in PsyCh.. I am not going to fight with you..

I have a lot of tilling to do today.. Annie is stopping for more seeds and a few more plants..

Oh, so you just keep them warm in one and then before they're almost ready to hatch move them to a different one to actually hatch in? Why move them? Just put 'em in, hatch 'em out, clean it out, refill it w/the next batch of eggs and start all over again. At least, that's how "I" would envision doing it.

I'm not trying to fight w/you either, I guess that one part did seem a little snotty once I reread it. Sorry. I just don't know what you mean by what you said. Some of it just doesn't make any sense to me, but maybe you have a different way of doing things? IDK, I guess I don't have a way of doing anything seeing as how it's all a first time experience for me. But yes, what's the point of incubating them if you don't hatch them out? Or is what FT said what you do? Do you move yours to a second one for the actual hatching part? What would be the purpose of that? And does it get messy when they hatch? I would imagine that I would be cleaning and sterilizing after every use/hatch and I just don't see how the styrofoam would hold up to bleach. And I'm just asking honest questions cuz I really don't know. I'm not being mouthy or sarcastic. Maybe I'm missing something??

Sandi, sometimes I forget that people do not have hatchers.. I only try to interject my experience to try to help.. If somebody wants to argue with me etc, I back out immediately.. they do not want my help.. I have been cleaning my styrofoams for years with bleach .. it has not done anything harmful to them.. however, someone who has never cleaned one with or without bleach tells me differently.. did I not say there was a product that you can get from any chicken catalog ? they chose to ignore that statement and skip right to the caustic cleaner argument.. and I never said a fan was not helpful,, I said it was not necessary.. when I started hatching eggs we did not have fans.. and we had close to 100% hatches .. I have been hatching for almost 50 years.. if I don't know anything by now, I should quit..

as long as I am on a roll,, just because a lot of people say one thing, does not make it truth.. One person who KNOWS wth he is talking about is worth listening to.

read my lips.. there is nothing wrong with styro bators.. 99% of the failure is the operator's error..

I have found that anybody who bad mouths a styro barot , does not know how to set one up properly...

..........jimtakingabreakfromhereforawhile............
ETA: varying temperatures within a styro bator is pure bull s--t..
If somebody had the equipment to measure such differences, they would not be using a styro .. so I wonder how they know there is a 5 degree varience..???

People use a second incubator to hatch so that they can keep incubating without stopping. On day 18 you stop turning the eggs and don't open the incubator until the hatch is done. That is why staggered hatches don't work. You can't open the incubator to turn the younger eggs. So you take out the ones ready to hatch and keep going with the other eggs in the incubator. As far as washing- I wash mine with a mild bleach solution, and the foam has not been compromised at all. The incubator will get a little messy, but not as bad as you would think. My first hatch I let them hatch out on the mesh, the second and third I did on paper towel and that was much simpler. Really though- if you have any questions about foam incubators Jim is the master and would be able to guide you.
Good luck!

Quote: Just my opinion but if you are spending the money I'd get the turner.... don't you have enough going on in your busy day and while you work to have to worry about turning eggs 3 times a day? You can always add it later but then there is more shipping and you might get a package deal buying it all at once.
Did you check out Cutlers? Here is what I would get (or should I say have gotten) the #1610 turner comes with quail racks.
