about that horse pulling.. I did not know about the shocking thing to train them,,

but did you know that during the pull, it is voice commands only,,, the driver is not allowed to even slap the reigns ?? NO hitting of any sort is allowed,, disqualification is the penalty.. but if they are allowed to train with a shocker, that should also disqualify them.. IMHO..

I never really paid attention to the rules for disqualification.... I was always to busy just watching the horses !!!

And trying to stay warm.... only been to horse pulls at Eagle River. I would love to go to some in the summer but to late now for today.... They must really work up a sweat in the summer because they are drenched even in the winter...

I did notice that the horses that didn't respond to the clang really responded to the driver's voice commands, I did notice that much.... Those horses no doubt have better respect for and from their owners.... the way it should be. More of a natural horsemanship at work here. Communication with your horse will keep you both safer then the fear of punishment any day. JMHO

Just like with the soring, how would they be able to prove that they are using disqualifying training practices ?

Heather, I agree.... get those older kids to do some chores..... maybe they could use a shocker ???? lol Where is DH on Saturdays ??? Working ?? If not maybe you can get him to help lighten the load for you a bit more....... if you do the same for him more often

Jim, my grays are a mix between Toulouse, Sebastapol, and White & Brown Chinese and look a bit lighter then yours.. Is that a purebred that you posted ?

Here ya go VickyW. Sorry I didn't reply to your question about FF and antibiotics. By the time I read it you had already been there and back with what you needed. Glad you found it. For anyone else that needs antibiotics. Most Fleet Farms, Farm & Fleets and Tractor Supply Stores and other Country Stores that stock livestock (cow, pig, goat, sheep,poultry) supplies will carry some of what you need. You will not find any antibiotics in the poultry section (or few in any). Got up at 4am to go to the Ricestonian swap to try and sell more chicks and these darn rabbits. Went to bed at 9:30pm woke up at 12:47am in sever pain but couldn't take next round of meds until 2, so stayed up until then. Took meds, back to bed then back up at 4. Swap turned out good for me but really short at a nice storm rolled and in people couldn't pack up fast enough. I stayed around until 9 just in case more buyers showed. A guy bought all my Wyondotte and Orp (17) chicks so give them to him for $30, another couple bought 2 of the Buff Orpington Bantam chicks. Come home with 6 chicks, really makes me happy. Sold no rabbits after I dropped the price to $7 each or 2 or more $5 each, one next to me was selling them for 25$ and up but she was selling. Seems to me people think because their higher price they are better, so maybe I should raise my prices instead of lowering them. I just need to find homes for them before winter or I may have to put them in the freezer. I only sold one pair of earrings, but at least it's something. Not alot of buyers showed, I think they knew it was going to storm this am. I'll keep trying though. Next swap that I know of is in Wisconsin Rapids, not sure how far that is but it's something to think about. Daughter also had someone on FB that wanted 2 of our RIR/Wyondotte cockerels so we brought them with as she was going to meet us ther to pick them up but she was a no show. Good thing we didn't make the drive for only that purpose.

what's wrong with using a shocker? nothing more than a whip or crop both used for years in training horses, shock collars on dogs is quite common and not considered inhumane

as other folks say, IMHO all of the above are only used by those who either lack the intelligence to be able to out think their "students" or too inhumane or indifferent to care how cruel and unnecessary any of these methods are. In my past I have trained both, including guard animals, successfully, without the necessity, to shock, whip (as in beat - popping for sound or tapping to get their attention is no different than snapping your fingers at your child) or otherwise inflict physical pain and/or injury.

FRENCHIE - training by "soring" is totally unnecessary, it's just easier than the right way. Refer to above remarks.
Training (control) animals thru fear of pain destroys all trust and can come back to bite you, literally.

JJ: Thanks for the info - we may need to check out the Kauffman's Country Store sometime when we are out tooling around. Hubby got a used Mustang convertible when he turned 50 and it looks like there may be some nice back roads to take it on between here and there. I would also be interested in the bird processor info. Our Delaware roos won't be large enough to take with our meaties to Clinton and even if they were large enough, I'm pretty sure they would charge me a higher price to have them processed/marked separately.

Colton: I think your mix will be fine. Like the guy in the youtube video, I prefer to go with the ground chicken feed and use the small plastic three drawer unit system. We started with one drawer of ground feed (about 3/4" - 1" deep) and added a batch of worms along with potato slices. As pupa formed we moved them to the pupa hatching drawer, then as beetles hatched we moved them into the beetle drawer. All drawers have the layer of substrate, and we move the beetles every two-three weeks, leaving the drawer which is filled with eggs. You can't see the eggs, but add sliced potato anyway, the worms will come. When we had a couple of drawers with lots of worms, we started the large plastic tub type drawer as a holding tank for the main crop of worms. Once you get a system it isn't too bad.

momgille: We had been buying freeze dried meal worms from F&F too, but quit since they are too expensive and worst of all "made in china". This is why I began researching systems to grow and freeze dry my own. I think we have the growing down and now that I have an abundance of worms along with a new dehydrator, I'm ready to attempt a freeze drying technique.

I am not totally against shocking,
But keeping in theme of the horse pulling, it doesn't make sense to me to train with a method not allowed during the pull..

that is, do you think they would allow a shock instead of giddyup at the pull ?
If there is trouble brewing, JJ will be stirring ..
