Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks Delisha. I guess I'll be going then...if I don't I'll end up kicking myself.
BTW your cockerel is gorgeous!
Thanks to you and everyone who complemented my Gold laced Orpington
Dog getting really skinny= kidney failure here. We had a springer mix that was healthy then got skinny for no reason. Imagine our shock at the reason! Pretty sad to put her down, but she was 9 or 10. Not real young but not real old either.

I gotta get down on the deed of culling extra Roos. No need feeding them. I've got 3 cockerels, and Babe. Speaking of Roos, the chocolate in my basement has the saddest crow ever. It sounds like a toy rooster whose battery is dieing. It is just so funny. I was actually woken up by his repeated practicing this morning. So I guess moving day is fast approaching.

OPINION NEEDED: I'm thinking of moving the 2 choc orp banties, in with my chicks in the nursery (in the shed). I'm thinking of this to expose them to each other for immunity building, but also flock/alliance building. My shed chicks are 2 months now and there are 4 of them. They are LF breeds. The choc orps are 4-5 mo juvies. I THINK they should all get along decently. But I am wrong frequently about chicken matters, so PLEASE interject whether this seems like a good idea. Deli? Terri? Jim? Unk? I don't want To kill my youngers or my $ birds either.

Boy hair cuts got canceled other day. Ive got to take a few now.

Amy..have a wonderful delivery!!
Quote: A while ago I bought some red worms ..boxed them in and started my compost pile. It has been so long I have no idea if they are still alive or not. I used to let the chickens all over the compost pile and they practically live in it. We recently had a few trees removed and the stumps ground. I put all of that new shaving on the pile and the chickens do not use it like they used to.
I know I spend too much On Hair cuts. I have buzzed them twice myself. Every. Single. One. Cried. Cried during and after. Cried on and off for 3 days. Whatever. But I do prefer how they look when others do it.

Amy... I think having a baby on Jim's birthday is a wonderful idea. Stay put little pointy nose, stay put! :-D

I guess I'm going to put a wire cage in the nursery pen tonight. I'll move the Orps in it. They can check each other out that way first, then I'll let them integrate in a day or two. I'm waiting until the 2 month olds are older before putting them with the main flock. George is all too interested in the little cheers and wouldn't necessarily mean to kill them, but just might.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but I hit to finally pet George the other day. Like really really pet him. His neck, his back, his chest, for a good 10 min before I had to get back in. It doesn't happen all the time, but it sure was sweet.
awww..You love your george..are you going to eat him?

Make a day and come out here..I will cut hair and feed you..

Have any of you guys on here done vermicomposting before?? I was thinking about doing it this last spring but wanted some responses if anyone has tried it before. And this would be for the garden, not the chickens.

yep I have, not in the typical sense really. Started one winter with some worms I ordered online, used 4 totes in the basement filled with rabbit manure and peat moss. That led to about 10lbs of worms I stuck in a pile of started compost and rabbit manure in the spring. That fall I dumped 5 yards of horse manure on top of that pile. This must have been 5-6 years ago. I now have a continuing pile that I make sure gets a load of fresh manure every fall. I use from the opposite end of that pile for side dressing, bed prep, and in the greenhouse. Good stuff. I also make aerobic compost tea here in the summer and I use the vermicompost for the base.

That being said, my chickens don't roam out to the garden area if and when they find those worms I'm sure they will be happy birds.

This fall I am planning on building a compost pile closer to the area the chickens range in, big piles here, this will be at least 10yds of material this fall (horse manure and leaves) I want the birds to have this to dig in and see how them turning the pile works for me next summer.

welcome btw, I like your idea of green house management, I had some young friends that interned at a couple of the largest greenhouses in the nation a few years ago.

I had my youngest daughter on a day when the heat index was 115*, the summer of '99 was a scorcher. I had three in the summer, the only one I was puffy with was the first. Amy get more protein into your system!

School open house was tonight...... always an ordeal. Thankfully I only have so many more to go to.

Took tomorrow off from work so I can go purchase school supplies. Yes I know I should have had them by now but I have been so busy and there is SO much going on......

Beautiful pics! I want to see pics of those Choc Orps in the sunshine!

I forgot to add that today was the last day with our intern..... he is such a good kid, I will miss him a lot! He is going to go far and do many great things.

good evening, I just transferred a few more keets into the TV.. makes 20 total.. didn't notice any more pips.. not many eggs left ,, In about 3 days these will join the others out in the brooder pen.

got half of the welding done .. Chris will be back this weekend to finish the other side.. He sure knows what he is doing.. I used to weld before I lost most of my good vision..
At least the 50 AMP breaker is adequate for the job..

The vet thought that Dora might have had lymes .. If that were the case, then stay tuned for our results with Flavocin..

TerriO,, I just never thought to give the Flavocin without peanut butter.. all the other pills we used the peanut butter, so we just went right on doing it.. Dora does chew the tabs, so maybe she would take them plain.. I will give it a try..

quiet here tonight.. guess I will go up and watch the boob tube ..

Set 58 chicken eggs and 7 turkey eggs today, these are on 2 incubators with turners. Now next batch goes in the old incubator that has no turner. I've never used one so need help. Can I keep them in the cartons and just turn upside down then right side up 3-4 times a day or will this not work? I can fit 4 doz cartons and one 18 in the incubator.

Deli, I don't think I'd eat George. But if he were do get mean and go after me and the kids a bunch, then it's possible. P!ss me off, and I do a lot of things I didn't think I'd do.

I'm tired. I had my nephews over last night. That was in trade so my sister would take my one son camping with her. Now tomorrow my oldest is having a group of friends over for the first time. I think 5 14 yr olds are showing up. Tomorrow thre are 2 therapy sessions. Haden will have people here from 12-6. I'm supposed to do school supply drop off tomorrow too. I'm not sure how I'm doing that. I'm not leaving the extra kids alone for that long. It's a group of boys and girls. No hanky panky on my watch! Im not looking forward to them coming over. Then I hav to pretend to be nicer. And not swear quite as much. It's sounds awful...;)

I better get some shut eye so I can play the part of semi-normal-non-psychotic-mom.

Good evening. I had lots of work today...didnt get done until 6:00 and then had to pick up my cheese curds, run them home and head to the 4H meeting. I hate this time of year with 4H--way too many pieces of paper and deadlines. We have to make new by-laws and a new charter...a new enrollment system too! It is just way too much for one meeting.

I took the dog to the vet and she doesnt have a bladder infection so I got some pills to "tighten the urethra" to stop leakage. Maybe I should just teach her to do Kegel exercises? Her urine wasnt as concentrated as they like to see so they suggested kidney function tests. I said what to do it it is positive? It is diet controlled. She might have worms too so I will get a sample tested along with a first morning urine sample. She is 10 years old and has been much more active since I switched her to a no grain diet. I am also going to increase her food 25%. Should see the result of that within a month.
BigFam--with your Springer, did she have any other signs? Mattie looks and acts so healthy that I think maybe it is worms or just not enough food. Heck, our rat terrier eats way more and he is only #13! She has lost 9 pounds in a year and now is #42. When we got her she was malnourished, then she got up to #54 and I was trying to lighten her...she probably is thinking, "sheesh, I loose all this weight and now she is worried!"
Ha ha! My brothers used to cry when dad got out the tall chair and the clippers - they hated their buzz cuts like poison!
My Dad used to do my bothers buzz cuts all the time! They looked so funny. I dont remember them crying though. The only one my Mom didnt let him do was my youngest bro cause his hair was blonde. All of my brothers have since cut their sons' hair in buzz cuts! I say to tell them that next year it will be buzzes for all unless they earn their own money to go to the salon...and by salon I mean some discount place!
I know I spend too much On Hair cuts. I have buzzed them twice myself. Every. Single. One. Cried. Cried during and after. Cried on and off for 3 days. Whatever. But I do prefer how they look when others do it.
I'll do it for you! I like to make little kids cry!

Guess I will say goodnight now...oh wait! I was going to post a few pics. BTW--I really liked those of the campground or whatever it was with the river! Made me relax just looking at them!

Here is a little duck that was left in the nest yesterday. I think she just forgot that he had to dry still! I brought it in and dried him with the hair dryer. I wasnt sure that it would make it but it was up with the others this morning.
wee.gif

Sure looks dead though doesnt it?

JJ--could this "albino zucchini" be that huge squash that you gave me? I have been picking them smallish but the leaves dont look exactly like my other zucchini leaves. The center is longer it seems. Maybe I did plant them?

Another shot of that duck and the other one too. One is really black and the other more brownish...They are starting to hang out together...maybe I do have a new breed going? Names! Names!

Yet another bunch 'o ducklings! I am thinking about heading to the racetrack at Jefferson this Sunday morning. Any body know if they will have the flea market going? I can find nothing on line!

OK--now I really am saying goodnight! See ya all tomorrow! TerriO

I think it might be easier on you and the eggs if you just tilt side to side, end to end..I have used lids from my miracle whip jars to prop them up. I used to do every side on a rotation 4 X a day.

I have seen you in action..a very peaceful mother. I wish I had your composure as a young mother.

Or you can do 7 mile fair....It is pretty reasonable and the birds go fast.

Gee CC, did respond.... gave a list of what we need. Yes, all dried. As for the size of my kitchen, good question. It's a U with a side wall. Kinda Small though. However it's open counters on 2 sides to the dining room and the living room. I could move the garbage and you can park there.
gig.gif
Sounds silly, but you could see the kitchen and we could still get around you and there is room to make a Y turn to go elsewhere. Neil sits in his walker in the kitchen and the 2 of us can maneuver around each other. If I ever get my drain fixed it should work with a few people.

I lost one today too. I think the heat got her. I got her as an adult and she laid 2-3 eggs a week yet. However she just broke brood less than a week ago and and looking her over I noticed she was starting to molt. I guess adding the heat it was just too much for her.

Wow, this sure hasn't been a good spring/summer for my flock!
I'm sorry, Cind.
hide.gif
I'll try to go back & find it.

I do have some dried plantain I can bring along. I am glad you will have a "spot" for me. In smaller spaces or with a lot of people around, I always feel like I am in everyones way all the time. I had a hen a year or 2 ago that died while going through a really hard molt. It happens, unfortunately. Too much stress is a killer in any species.

Huntress, I breed lav orps if you are interested. And I go to NE WI pretty often. Whereabouts are you located or near, if you don't mind me asking?

Stacy, I hope you feel better soon.

Glad to have helped.

OMG Del, that is a gorgeous rooster! I would love to see the babies he and my Latte could make. (So sorry Ang)
hide.gif
I have a Latte too. And a Mocha & a Java & a Hershey. Oh, and now a Nestle too).

Jim, how is your BO pullet?

Not much new here. Got the coop cleaned out today, DH installed a new poop board, the adolescents got chased outside by Pinkie just as the auto door closed (good thing it opens after 60 seconds to let any stragglers in) so I chased them back in, some of the hens did not approve of the poop board & let me know all about it, and tomorrow I seriously need to pick some apples and pears. Some of the branches are bowed all the way to the ground so the rabbits have been helping themselves to a snack.
barnie.gif
Oh, and this afternoon, I had a lovely sinus headache, but no rain to have caused it. Double
barnie.gif
Hopefully it won't be a double head banging moment shortly. So with that, I will say sweet dreams, all! And I miss you Bigz & DrH!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, good luck with that one.

Mellie, I almost forgot to mention that your soaps are simply DIVINE! I was going to share a few with my sis, but I knew she'd be bugging me constantly to get more.
