Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks to all for posting pictures of the little ones they are all beautiful. Grandmas just can't get enough of them. We had 9 broilers this summer and I don't think we will do that again. Way to hard to say goodby

We didn't have a plucker either and no problem after finding the magic temp. Well can't delay any longer gifts to wrap and cookies to cut out etc. Hurley I'm not sure how to get a bigger pic for you ? will check into that soon. DH built the coop and run not knowing much about what they needed and I think he did a pretty good job. A bit small but that only means I have to be picky on the chicks I choose this spring. Have a good night all. Sue

BigZ, you made me do more digging (always good). Here it is (Waupaca County).....

"C.C. Lawful Killing of a Dog: A person may intentionally kill a dog only if a person is threatened with serious bodily harm by the dog and other restraining actions were tried and failed; or, immediate action is necessary. A person may intentionally kill a dog if a domestic animal that is owned or in the custody of the person is threatened with serious bodily harm by the dog and the dog is on property owned or controlled by the person and other restraining actions were tried and failed; or, immediate action is necessary."

Amyable, I suggest you look up your own County ordinances on this subject. The State Law is very vague.....

Trying to get all my Christmas shopping in and not doing a very good job about it! Having our back bedroom worked on now..... I need a closet! Last room in the house to have work done on it and then the sign in the yard this Spring!

Ok, off to veg out before bed. Love the pics of everything! Welcome newbies! Anyone have ideas for the next Bash location?????

That got me going in the right direction BL4, thanks. Found this in the WI state statutes:

(b) A person may intentionally kill a dog if a domestic animal that is owned or in the custody of the person is threatened with serious bodily harm by the dog and the dog is on property owned or controlled by the person and:

1. Other restraining actions were tried and failed; or

2. Immediate action is necessary.

Couldn't find any specific to Brown or Vilas counties, but I think I can say I win the debate

Cutie kids Hurley! Your older boy has the most gorgeous dark eyes!

Bigz, I must second the 'feels like family' on this thread, and that DrH brightens our days. Doc, you have a way of puttin' things that makes me laugh... don't change! Can't hardly wait for the 2nd Bigzio Bash...

Good Morning Everyone! Geez you guys knock it off! I just calls em as I see's em. Quite obviously it's all your fault if you weren't good people I wouldn't say so. But thanks for the kind words. Had to laugh Bigz about about the wedge, I do the same thing. Feel that it's part of the tree and if I went through the effort to cut it, it belongs on the pile, BTU's. Now if I could figure out a sawdust catch bag for the saw....

Other DrH I used an old large canner that had a hole in it that I filled with a screw and washer over a wood fire in the yard as everyone says water temp is the trick. When it's right the feathers pull easily when it's wrong they don't or too hot the skin comes off. Somewhere on here is a thread for doing it. I used meat thermometer in the water. Would be cheaper than a turkey fryer. Got the new freezer in place and the kids got fresh bedding. I like the rye straw I get cause it has the grain still in it and they love to scratch and look for it. Peatwo went on the defensive when I put it in the appartment. Pretty tight in there with the 3 of us and straw being thrown around. Pecked me and flared up. I picked him up and explained that there was no threat. I put him down and he right to scratching. Have to take the coop door off and trim the bottom it's dragging real bad. That coop moves a lot with the weather changes. Then finally going to drag out the trees I have down and get them bucked up before this next round of snow hits. Thinking of making chic noodle soup tomorrow. Enjoy the sunshine and warm weather!

Sorry to jump back on but came in to warm my tootsies, did morning chores with just barn boots on. Other DrH [I like that maybe you can take some of my heat]I saw a thing on TV about a corn snake caught I think in the southwest with unusual colorings, not rare but not common. Snakes are cool the only "thing" I have with them is the element of surprise. You never see them until your right on top of them. Have to tell ya that my fave is the King Cobra. It's just so cool looking! Think it's the way the head scales are and that ever present look of seriousness and determination. Can understand why they are revered as gods to some. And sounds like you had a good time tracking deer. Can just envision it. Been there done that. Still doing it. Enjoy your time with them it leaves an impression and their gone too soon. Too dang cute! Loved the sandbox inna snow suit.

LOL at "otherDrH"

Yes, I'm trying to enjoy every minute with them as they are growing too darn fast already!

He loves his sandbox. It's great fun to throw sand out of, sun or snow.

I'm sitting here watching the snow come down hard, teeny tiny flakes, so very pretty outside right now. Just got back in from going out and closing the coop door since the wind is out of the east and blowing right into the coop. Gave the girls some bread, oats, and sunflower seeds to snack on in addition to their pellets in the coop, refreshed the water, and shut them in to weather to storm. Got me a freshly laid egg for my effort that wasn't there an hour ago.

I've got it sitting and waiting to be set. Thought I might try to hatch a few chicks with my Marans eggs as practice eggs. I also just ordered 4 white silkie eggs (with a couple dark black copper marans eggs thrown in the box) to try to hatch out, so hopefully will have about a dozen going into the incubator soon. Dusted off my left over hovabator (we now hatch reptile eggs in a big old store refrigeration unit rigged to 82 degrees - don't have to turn them, just house them in deli cups in vermiculite) and added an egg turner for the chicken eggs. It's currently warming up to get temps well stabilized and set before I want to set the eggs.

Wish us luck for a New Years' Hatch! If we fail, well, it'll be good practice before I get some hankering to order some expensive hatching eggs next spring.

If we succeed, then I'll have basement chickens for the winter (woo hoo!)

Man, all this beautiful snow, makes me want to fire up the fireplace and make some hot cocoa. It's great when everything is batted down and I don't have to go anywhere.

And yes, corns come is a massive variety of patterns and colors. There are over 12 genes identified now and numerous combinations of those up to proven quad and quint homozygous recessive traits now. You can get them in nearly any color you could want. Since I know many people are creeped out by snakes, I won't post them here, but you can view some of our corns at http://CCCorns.com if you like them.

My husand and I are genetics geeks and have enjoyed the corns from that aspect especially.

I'm having a ball starting to learn the genes in chickens (many of them are quite comparible to some of the corn snake and dog color genes).

Evening all! Well, sealed up some drafts in the coop, and everyone is fat and happy and warm out there, so time for a night by the fireplace, watching it snow outside. Had to just check in and say HI

Took a while to catch up with you guys...Bigz--you best be double reading your end part of your post before you cut any more trees! That sounds mighty scary having a tree go the wrong way! My DH always cuts on the wrong side IMHO...I tell him if you cut there; it will wall that way...he NEVER believes me so I go in and when I hear the tree come down I go out to see it lying right where I said it would!
smack.gif
Opposite of where he said it would go... When will he listen? (never) So be careful out there hey??!!!
Other DrH--is that snow that Tommy is tossing out of the box? I wasnt sure if there was something in the air or if it was just the pic...looks like he's having a great time! I would really like to talk reptiles with you some day...I LOVE them. You missed all the prayers earlier this summer when we were all hoping that Stuart and Monty (the Russian Torts) would come home...they pushed their garden wall down and disappeared around Memorial Day...not to be seen again. I looked every day this summer and never found them...I am hoping that they found a decent place to burrow down deep enough and will make an appearance next spring...long shot I know.

I feel so bad that I have to go out again tonight...I have a client at 7 pm and I am not looking forward to getting the car out of the driveway and on the road. I am jealous that some of you at least are snuggled in for the night! I am heading out to do chores and run water for the critters at 6...then I am going to work in my coveralls! Never know when you might have to walk when you are out in this! I am glad that DH isnt coming home tonight...I think tomorrow will be bad enough...but at least light out!
Bad news on Mr Buffo--I took him out of his sling to see how it was going and he is definitely not any better. He is laying on his side and both legs point to the front and the "good" leg's foot is starting to curl! I am afraid that he is not going to get better. When dd 24 gets home from work I am going to have her help me re-rig his sling...at least he wasnt laying in poop that way...
My neighbor has a plucker that he built...he said I could use it but it is not exactly portable...I am sure one of you handy guys could fashion one pretty easily. Just a spinning drum with rubber fingers on it really...BCC you will have to send me some directions on the art of "properly killing" so they pick easy...Other DrH I think we could get together to process...I dont mind plucking...it's the killing that I hate! I guess that is why I have a crippled roo in my living room hey?
lau.gif

Well--you guys stay snug! I need to head out...good night! Terri O

Snowy Evening Here To All...looks like we prolly have 4" of the fresh stuff. Me and Suzie went this mornin and cut a balsam fur for my mom. She is 89 and says it just wouldn't be the same without a real tree for Christmas. We had it in the stand at her house just before it started to snow. Trimming will come later this week.
Broke a fresh bale of straw for the small coop today. Like you said Doc, the good stuff that's left doesn't go to waste...those legs are on a mission searching for goodies! I still need to tack the plastic over their windows. Tomorrow for sure....Suzie has been telling me to move that project to the very top of the list for morning.
Sorry you had to venture out tonight Terri. Hope yu have a safe trip!
BL4, thanks for the information about the dog attacks. Nice to see it in real print again.
BCC, I see you changed your tag below your name. Sure hope you still are a cheesehead at heart and continue to share all your wisdom!

Stay Safe... ~ bigzio

Evening, DH is back out snow plowing at all the places on our route. Terry O -drive safe out there tonight! Speaking of snakes my DS(8) saw a corn snake when the Humane Society came to visit his classroom yesterday-of course it was available for adoption but he said he knew I would say no to that!

Well it's been a sad evening here today, the kids made it home from school before I got back from work and walked in the house to find that Cassie(our Irish Setter) had flexed her crate and escaped to come upstairs and she knocked the brooder over and killed both babies and ripped a side of our couch too! All 3 were in tears by the time I made it in the door.

It was probably a good thing DH was driving when DD called me. It helps a bit that we are setting eggs on Sat for the New Years Day Hatch going on here in a different forum- 2nd Annual New Year's Hatch & Contest.

Off to do chores and get the incubator cleaned up and running for Sat.

Stay warm and safe.
