Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

AWWWW Hurley--I might have to take a drive over there just to watch you collect eggs in that basket! Lots better than mine...I tend to use whatever bucket I find cause I cant seem to remember to bring the wicker one out with me! Yesterday I brought them in in an old rat poison pail!
So I cam home be3tween jobs cause my client wants to go out for dinner at a place that doesnt open until 4. Whoo-Hoo! I get to sit down for a little bit. I also got the mail and I had the most wonderful surprise in the box! My dill seeds came and also a very welcome treat! Thanks Bigz!!! I know what I am snacking on this afternoon!
End of my break...I have to go out and run water...everything was pretty well frozen this morning! Have a nice afternoon! Terri O

BL4--thanks for reiterating that we CANNOT afford a salt set up!

BL4 - Thanks for the kind words about my blog. We are getting things going fairly well, Have a good list of clientele already, so that is a very good thing. Just trying to get a decent meat breed figured out for next year, Cornish X make meat, but I really don't want to raise any more of them than I have too, LOL.

Cedar Post, I am just North of you, Small World...LOL

Well, hope you all have a great evening!!!!

mine fully free ranged, not a chicken tractor, with the same feed I feed all the cornishX, turkeys and anything that doesn't need layer (my own recipe). plus i raised cornishX at the same time, the cornish did better

but the batch of rangers where very stressed when i got them, the whole batch that came to the mid-west was either dead or almost dead because the PO didn't handle them right. early summer is when I got them, 50.

You can tell me to shut up, but hey I'm enjoying my chicken browsing. I've narrowed down the list of possibles for additions to the flock to the following so far...

Iowa Blues
Silkies

(Ok, these are definites, the first in honor of where I grew up and to help preserve the breed I'd like to keep a small breeding pen, the other because I've loved the looks of them since I was a kid and am considering showing them.)

White La Fleche and Black La Fleche - love the non-crested v-comb look of them
Cuckoo Maran - OK, I have some blue cuckoo marans, but want to add a couple from another source
Sicilian Buttercup - just need one or two to look at, cool combs!
Silver Spitzhauben - that pattern is just lovely

A selection of Wyandottes:
Columbian Wyandotte
Silver Penciled Wyandotte
Silver Laced Wyandotte
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte

Across species (dog/horse/reptile/chicken) I have a love for the white/black/gray/blue/lilac end of the spectrum and love contrasty patterns, so I'm sure many of my selections make a lot of sense.

Think I'm going to build some covered runs with a long coop at the west side of the runs separated into small coops for each run (secondarily acting as a wind-block as I swear we're in a wind tunnel here). That way I could house a few breeding groups separately but still keep them up here by the house where I can pamper them properly instead of down behind the house where the basement walks out.

How do other Wisconsinites house breeding pens?

Evening All...You are welcome Terri. I agree that it's ok to eat the duck too! Good to see BBCB and CP visit us lonely cheeseheads.
Yep, it's ok to protect your domestic livestock. One should take every effort to avoid having to shoot a troublesome dog, however it is our right to do so if the need arrises. The conservation rules are in regards to state owned animals, not domestic livestock on private prpoerty.
I cut another load of wood today. Now I have prolly 6 cords to splitt. I had fun with a elm that came back on the saw instead of falling away. God I hate when that happens. It was a struggle with a metal wedge to convince the tree the right way to go! It could of been a widow maker for sure.

Well it looks like we have 2 babies from our test hatch of 5 Blue Andalusian eggs- will be checking the 3 eggs left in the incuabtor when DH gets home to see if any are still going. The smaller dark one had a bit of a challenge when hatching and had a bunch of gunk dry on it-so DH ended up helping me give it a bath and gently dry it with a hair dryer before putting it back in the incuabtor to finish drying. It seems that the bigger yellowish one(might be a splash) looks out for the smaller one, making sure it comes over to drink and eat. These 2 are very chatty too! Our foster Irish setter can't stop staring at them!
