Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Double check your brooder temp, try that sugar for now, make sure all the chicks are drinking.

Most of us use some type of electrolytes in the chicks water, it's available at most feed mills, TSC and FF

problems in the morning call that hatchery again

pretty cold for shipping yet, might have stressed the birds somewhere during the trip

good luck,,,,,,,,

HI everyone!  Sorry that it has been so long. Hope you all are doing well!! I have some questions for you all.  So I ordered chicks from a hatchery a month ago, and received them last week. We had 2 DOA and within two days we had only 6 out of 15 left.  They would all be fine and then all of the sudden they would just act lethargic and die.  So, the hatchery sent me replacements, which I received today, at the moment, out of the 35 we received 5 have died, 1 does not look good, and now two are acting like they have leg issues, which was not there this morning! I am at a loss of what to do anymore. We have raised chicks last spring and they all did wonderful.  We did not change anything this time, except that the brooder is in the basement and not upstairs.  Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!!

You don't have any mold in the basement, do you? What are they bedded in?

Deli, soon it will all melt...... odds of more snow worthy of shoveling are pretty slim....... we all hope.
hope away !!! in 2006, March 14 we had 9 inches of pretty white snow.. I remember it well, because that is the day I had my heart attack.. I went out to plow and my tire was flat on the Ram.
so I went back into the house , sat down and had the attack.. LOL

Good evening! Lots of folks here...like JIm said earlier...we were all out in the sun today! (and it felt GOOD!)
I would tend to agree with Dan on it being a bit too chilly for shipping yet. Electrolytes for sure...or sugar. Also call if you have more deaths than chick paid for. I hate that...it's like they dont matter!

I was talking with a relative of a friend today in TN. She had a hen dropped off at her place that was in a box and frozen in 4" of ice! Yikes, I told her the story of Charlie...and that is how I met all of you! ( the best day for sure!)

I think my critters are officially tired of winter. We need to be DONE! THe snow has fallen of the robin's back way more than 3 times...didnt BL4 post some robins about 3 weeks ago? Sheesh--what have we done to deserve this?

I am looking forward to the get together at my place this Saturday! Please tell me ETA? I am heading to the vet in the early morning (or maybe I can have DH do it) then the horse vet is coming to do shots around dinner time. THe farier is here tomorrow so dont expect a clean house...you are all doming just to see ME right? LOL

Have a great night! Terrio

(PS) Jim--quit overdoing it!

BBP - No mold in the basement. I have pine shavings down for bedding. I have electrolytes in the water. Brooder temp directly under the heat lamp is 98. I have medicated chick feed. I am at a loss. Maybe it was just to cold for them...they had a heat pack in with them. Its just strange that they seem all happy and running around and within a couple of hours it is a different story! Plus the two that all of the sudden have leg issues...just weird!

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the sugar. Should I do that along with the electrolytes?

Thanks again for all of your help! I really appreciate it!

Any idea why? My friend in NY, who lives on a farm with a creek found one of her hens standing in the creek, in 2" of water. (Ok, obviously it's a little warmer there than here, my creek is still frozen solid). Her yard is still covered in snow, could the hen have frostbite on it's feet and it's cooling them off?

How did I miss that there will be a get together at Terri's on Saturday?!

Long story, but I will be headed south on Friday to see my cousin. I will be bringing one of her dogs home with me on Saturday. CS, need some goodies on Friday dropped off at work? Terri, mind if I pop in on Saturday?

Phone interview tomorrow...... ugh.
