HI All!

All the spring talk of chicks and gardening is making me want to get going on both too! However I'll let the hens do the hatching.

Well, Jon should be in Hawaii now, or any minuet now. Waiting for his call.

Guess that's it.... Night All!

I guess I shouldn't say this. There are 2 sets of sisters in the area with "hatcheries". Jim may not be referring to the ones that have been causing problems with people I know.

I wish! I will sleep later

Thank you. Now I know to stop considering making that trip for expensive birds. I will just grow out what I have here. And say a prayer! Lol! Actually just got done locking the last of ellis' s eggs from before ahe went broody :'( I did break her brood. But she is still not laying. So I decided to give her freedom back. She is happy.

I know of the 2 sisters; one from Woodville and the other from Almena. They have caused trouble for a mutual friend of blackbrooks and have heard many stories. The only experience I have with them is numerous phonecalls which have pushed me to stay away. I know of a mother/daughter group from Winter that have been doing the same such practices and see them at near every swap I'm at. They had also clogged the Rusk Cty fair last year with numerous not so great of a representation of the dif breeds. They even sexed some of my birds as cockerels which later come to all be pullets. But I just stay away from them also after what I seen and heard. I had my fair share last spring of being ignorant and buying from the wrong people and wish I had the word of mouth prior.

I guess I really don't mean to talk about people but what would we have here if we didn't. When it comes down to it I think word of mouth is a benefit for all of us spending alot of money on chickens. My personal thought on this after seeing the chicks and offspring of them is only that they must be just breeding for the money and not quality. Therefore no better than a hatchery just making chickens for eggs but after seeing them and hatchery chicks I think even them look better. When a person buys chicks in good faith that they are getting something that is suppose to be a representation of the breed/color and gets the opposite people need to speak out. I know from being on the BLRW thread that there are many people working very hard to get the color recognized and doing this is not something that will help that happen. I've had similar things happen to me with different breeds. I don't want to be one of these people. Melanie after showing him my Foley pullet and the 2 I got from you he was in awe over the difference and hopes my offspring have similar looks. And I know of those ours aren't the best, but something to work with for now. Now on the other hand I know that no matter how hard you work at a breed you can have negative traits come out that are recessed. But to have all of them have problems is just astonishing to me and shows that they aren't breeding in the correct manner. Word of mouth this person was suppose to have nice BLRW and I was ready to jump in and purchase them and I'm very glad I waited on this.

Melanie I will be having chicks hatching from them next week and and quite certain that the pullet with the bent beak is not crossbeak but possibly a fluke during incubation or early chick but will find out then. I've seen crossbeak and it looks much different, if I'm wrong she will go over to my layer pens. I am still looking for 1 or 2 nice BLRW hens/pullets to add to my flock for breeding if anyone knows of some good quality or has some themselves please message me.

My thoughts exactly on the whole word of mouth. How else are people going to know? I haven't added any new chickens from anyone local, ever. I always get them shipped from people on BYC. I've had good results so far (minus one deformed SFH).

Stacy, I really look forward to updates on how it goes. I was unsure on criss cros (sorry o forgot the new name) and decided just not to chance it. Looks like you are doing the right thing tho. Good for you! And I have del to thank for finding the blrw for me :) I am excited to grow out and see what we end up with!we will all have to share pics of them as they mature!
Cind, hope jon made it safely.

good morning,, I can't stay long.. have to take GS to a job interview.. hope he gets it.. then he is going to move into his own apartment..

Yup, my nemisis's were from Winter.. I sent them a picture of my rooster that I posted here a week ago, just to show them the type of hen I was looking for,, their response was, our rooster is much prettier that yours.. I wasn't comparing roosters, I was looking for a hen.. dingbats !!

we got a bit of white but it doesn't look like snow.. just a thin layer of frozen something or other..

Hope we are out of the cold and into the new...

Ahh BL4 - I thought you were the other early seed starter, and it looks like Cindlady may be joining the ranks of "younger eager beavers", although I don't think I qualify as "younger", but I am eager to get gardening! I know bigZ that it is early and for many years we didn't start planting outdoors until Mem. Day. But . . . we bought this 1980's partial solar envelope home with a south facing solarium and just have to push the envelope on gardening. Hey - I did better than last year, I started the seeds mid February

yeah had to re-plant most everything

Hi everyone,

Terri, what is this world coming to.. instant hatches ? instant gratification,, no wonder there are so many impatient drivers on the road.. nobody is taught to have to wait anymore..

Just take those kids a video of the life of an egg in an incubator and let them see the whole 3 weeks in a 15 minute session..

maybe that is the trouble with so many people on byc who can't stand to wait for their eggs to hatch. ??
I agree with you on the impatience of people now days especially on the road, but now I feel I need to redeem myself on the seed starting . . . oh heck yeah I'm a bit impatient

I am planting a small garden this year. Last year was a bit much...I am going to try more herbs for the chickens and I need Comfrey. I lost all of it last year and it never came back up. I need to plant a ton of it I think.

good evening,, yeah Dan, I figured you would know something about n== I mean springs..

I don't know who he bought the chickens from, but if I had to guess, I would say it was from a woman (or two) from up in your vicinity , eh , Stacy ?

the new lock works great on the chicken coop door..

Today I did not hear a peep from any of the people who were interested in the puppies..

Now that winter is over, we are going to get hit with some of that early spring weather.. then I suppose it will be followed by a hot and dry summer ..

I am going to make a jig for making seed tapes.. If it works, I will pass the info on to you..

........jiminwisc..........

Jim: I forgot this in my last post (I wonder does CRS come with retirement???). Please post pics of your seed tapes along with the info. I make my seed starter pots and would like to add seed tapes to my garden "to do" list.

I had the same summer weather thoughts, so I have three of those big shuttles (250 gallon I think), one is hooked into the house gutters. We plan to run a hose from that one, each time it fills, to the other two for reserves. Eventually we will set the other two up to catch rain from the work shop. Those shuttles work great, except for finding a fitting that will allow us to attach the garden hose. For now duct tape is keeping it in place, but if you have thoughts on where a person can find the correct size fitting that would be great. Our local hardware plumbing dept had nothing.

My geese have a cute little nest that I found(and almost stepped on). I'm itching to use my incubator but I know that the eggs are probably better off with mom and dad. Would be so happy to get some goslings.

Keep your fingers crossed for Almira and Uncle Waldo!
