Quote: Now this makes me nervous about going to the swaps..... Just so I can avoid getting sick or carrier or infected bird would somebody PM the name so I make sure to avoid them. We plan to once we buy a place ( currently renting ) to get the flock tested. Not planning to sell any birds to others before we get tested....

Fernie,

Having a good quarantine area and making sure you add one of your birds into the quarantine process after a few weeks will help with checking for diseases.

You can have healthy birds on your property
Joe Smo can have healthy birds on his property

You buy two birds from him and he buys two birds from you

your birds kill half his birds from illness and his birds make all of your birds sick from some illness.

It is common..it takes time to acquire immunities in different areas..
Some birds are immune to Mareks..others are life long carriers
Same with Cocci and many other chicken illnesses and diseases..some kill and other make some sick

use safe precautions and practices and always quarantine new birds away from your flock..add one of your birds to the new birds two weeks before integration.

how come you don't remove the spurs?

Or eat the boys?

I have one LF Chocolate out of the egg..two more to go. (I only got 4 fertile chocolate eggs)
3 BLR out
1 BBS out and 6 more to go..than i am done till Easter Hatch.

I need to take pictures of all the new chicks
I have Jubilees
Chocolates
Whites
Red Cuckoo
Blue Cuckoo
one Spangle
We saw a vid about removing spurs by taking a pliers & gently twisting back & forth until it comes off. Is this how you do it? Has anyone done it before? DH was considering it.

Eating them? Never butchered before and too chicken.

More babies hatching tonight, sent 11 off to new homes that are from 2 weeks ago. Ooo, Elkhorn, think I'll go tomorrow (as long as they don't call me in, darn on call) and browse about. The boys would enjoy that.

Ordered more pullorum antigen tonight, will put the extra up for testers who need small batches of antigen. Price just keeps going up and up. :p

Hello just wanted to see how may of you in WI are certified npip testers I just went to a seminar in stevens point last night and learned alot about it. the products that are used and all the paperwork that goes with it. I leave closer to the Milwaukee area about an hour north. I can now become a tester myself but thinking is it worth it when i only have a few birds and that i want to test. and what about people that need their birds tested seems like not many people do unless they are big breeders. and people still sell eggs on ebay and stuff without being npip.

Kids in 4-H need to get their birds tested before showing them. Last year my kids couldn't show at county or state, so were going to go to Portage. There was a shortage of serum, so it would've been nice to find someone closer than where we found. I can't remember where anymore, but it was on the way to Portage for us. That is partly why I want to get certified. I would've been there in Stevens Point with you, but the location was inconvenient for me at this time.

Hi All!

I hope I feel up to going to the swap, Neil had to barrow my walker while his was being fixed but I have it back now so maybe. I'll see how I feel when I try getting up for it LOL.

Well, better hit the hay. Night All!

it was very informational and now i am interested in getting the sirum the Pullorum Antigen that is used with the birds blood to see if they are negitive or positive. thats all they use. they showed us how to use it and we each had to go and show them how we use it and then they signed a sheet that we hand in with $25. The antigen goes for a price of $160 normal places. and in 1000 drop doses. they dont make 100 bottle doses anymore they said. dumb. not many privite breedsers have that many birds and the stuff expires in a year. as this testing needs to be done annually. they said its smart to get in groups with people that are interested in buying it and pitching in since might as well use as much of it as you can. but i dont really know anyone that would be intersted in my area i could test friends birds but i dought they would pay me as they dont breed their birds for selling anyway. just for eggs and stuff like that. i want to put some of my ducks and geese in the fair was my main reason for doing the class and so i can send eggs through out the usa. if you would like i have the powerpoint presentation i could copy it if you would like to know more about it
