Unfortunately the law reads that dogs at large run the risk of getting shot, they do not have to be doing anything wrong. Ultimately it is the owners responsibility to keep their dogs on their property, or with them at all times when away from the boundaries. The neighbor had the right to shoot the dog.

he probably had the "right" but that does not make it the RIGHT thing to do..
the key word here is " neighbor "..

I know people like that,, hey, there is a dog, I guess I will shoot it ..

I don't care about the "law". He could have went to her and told her to keep her dog home if he didn't like it. At least give a warning, which it seems like he failed to do.

The cop said the law states they can only shoot if it was after his livestock or person.

Yes your neighbor should have talked to you first, I agree with that completely in every instance of dogs roaming on property (even when livestock are harassed). Give the owner a chance to rectify the situation before taking lethal action. I was reading on another forum that in the first instance they shoot the dog with a paint ball gun; then ask around if anyone had a dog come home covered in paint.....

I do believe though that it is ultimately the owners responsibility to keep their animals at home or on their property where they belong. You do have the right to have this neighbor pay for veterinary care and have them fined. I do hope she recovers completely.

So sorry to hear bout your dog Stacie! And yes, I would go to war also! They are not allowed to just shoot a dog cause they see it on their property and it's not theirs. For me it's the same as if I would shoot someone's kid crossing my yard without reason or warning. And as BBP stated, you're not allowed to just carelessly shoot at a dog or other animal if it is not threatening either you/person or your lifestock. Go and have him pay for the vet bills at least!!!

At this hot and humid day we pretty much did everything we planned not to do, and left the things we did plan be. Although the cars really needed to be fixed. Oh well...

Had a couple nice scream discussions with dickhead as he was wanting to do things the most difficult way without giving it any thought. Asking for my opinion and then still doing as he wants, only to end up doing it my way anyway. Typical male!

We moved the fire pit from inside the duck pen to the side, as we did with the home made outhouse (we keep our campfire wood in there), mowed a bit of lawn after switching blades. Filled the old fire pit with the ground from the other (ducks and chickens are happily digging around in it now) and started a fire to burn all the scrap wood from the condo build.

Also we put up canvas and tarp for some much needed shade in the condo and pen areas after moving the duck house to where the outhouse was. More room to roam for them now. Next would be to take down the gazebo, de-bird it and put it back together by the new fire pit and use it for us humans again. But that probably has to wait for another day as we're both sore, sun burnt and wore out from all this. All that's for dinner tonight is pizza in this weather...

Will post pics of the condos later, if I don't fall asleep in the shower...

Un fortunately you are wrong about shooting dogs. At least in Indiana. My neighbor and I were having trouble with dogs and our chickens and my pidgins. The neighbor called animal control and was told that they were unable to come out. We lived on the far edge of the county. He said just shoot them. He said because Indiana had leash laws and that all dogs were to be kept up and we were within our rights to do so. We never did except for one time he caught dogs in killing his rabbits and shot them up pretty bad. Unfortunately they made it home and the kids saw it which just about killed my neighbor but the people had been warned and you just can not them kill everything you own.

good afternoon, went to F&F .. bought a fishing license .. everybody and their uncle was there..

gassed up the tiller, pulled the rope a few times and then said to heck with it,, too hot for this..
too hot ?? how long ago was ti when it was too cold ??

I got all 3 of the hatching trays updated with the extended ends.. the one and only guinea in there still managed to slip by 2 of the trays and ended up on the floor.. WTH ???
I might have to set up a trail cam and see how they do that ..

I do live in Wisconsin (thus I'm on the cheesehead thread) and as I did mention that you're allowed to shoot them if they threaten YOU or YOUR LIFESTOCK. As I recall pigeons and chickens do count as lifestock (as do our pheasants when we shot a bobcat caught in the act last year and trapped out 3 others). Didn't say anything against not protecting you or your animals.

Afternoon, not much time to post lately, but have been able to read so at least I'm not behind.

Sounds like everyone is keeping busy, we had rain off and on today so the grass will be even longer. Looks like it is getting ready to rain again

Sorry to hear about neighbor/dog problems, hope the dog will make a speedy recovery!

Won't be at the bash this year- just way to much going on- kid's have soccer games this weekend and we have 1 rental unit to turn and ready in 1 day.

We are now at 3 weeks that my dad has been in the hospital and it looks like he will be there another 2-3 weeks. The week after mother's day was very rough/stressful- the doctor's weren't sure he was going to make it, all tests that the hospital ran came back clean but he wasn't responding like they had hoped he would have. They ended up putting the breathing tube back in and told us that we needed to make decisions as a family so we were prepared. They did started him on 2 antibiotics mid week and by Sat(5/17) we were seeing an improvement- in fact by Sunday(5/18) he had improved enough that they removed the breathing tube and he was breathing well with just a little extra oxygen. They kept him in ICU for a couple extra days to watch him a bit more and then moved him to a different floor this past Tuesday. At this point, aspiration pneumonia is what he is being treated for. He is still on anti-seizure meds- which make him sleepy and causing confusing for him. PT/OT and speech therapy are working with him each day and they are planning to move him down to the PT floor this week so he can continue to receive 3 hours/day of therapy. We took the kids down on Sat and this morning to visit and help brighten his day. Today, he was more awake and talking with us, the kids put their pictures in a picture frame so he can have them to see each day- he really liked it. All the thoughts and prayers for my dad have been greatly appreciated.

Best get moving again- have to groom out some of the Angora bunnies.
