Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

All of you in the Madison area check in please. I hear there was a tornado by Verona last night. Let us know you are all ok!

Momgille & Hens&Roos glad to hear you're ok.

Got a message from Kristip they had some branches down otherwise all ok.

We had a tree go down next to the mobile coop, not sure what if any damage has been done to the roof yet. Sure glad it happened now, a week from Friday we'll have 160 meat chicks in that coop, so we have time to make any necessary repairs.

The only other damage was the new screen room, assemble about two weeks ago - minor in the whole scheme of things.

I'm counting my blessing, we got off easy compared to folks in Verona which is only about 15 miles from Kristi and me.

We may be in for another bunch of storms again tonight - stay safe everyone.

I waited until now for somebody to post .. then I just went onto byc ch and here everybody is.. I was not getting the notification that someone posted..

I got the cukes planted just before dark.. there were a lot more seeds in that pack than I thought.. but I planted all of them anyway,, about 100 seeds in a 12 foot row.. can we say thinning out boys and girls ?

The guineas did it to me again.. there are a few early birds in bator #2 .. IDK from which batch, yet.. I just put a bunch of them in that the guineas were sitting on for who knows how long.. I have a hunch that is the early batch ..

there is a nest with 24 eggs in it in the rhubarb patch.. nobody sitting on them.. tomorrow they will be brought in and put in bator #2..

glad everyone weathered the storm.. I hope we can keep on doing this well..

Visiting my cousin and her fam at the cabin on Castle rock lake in Dr Ha ha land picking up the youngest. Beautiful night tonight. Planted some sunflowers today and did some weeding. Packed up the car and here we are!

I am glad to hear everyone is ok. Scary stuff what Ma Nature can do.

Steve's hand continues to improve. Whoo-hoo! The swelling & redness are gone except around the knuckle of his index finger, where the bite was. It was weeping a tiny bit, but all in all, it really looks good! And he is very impressed at how quickly the scratches healed up using your goop, Cindy. Thanks again!

The chicks are silkies from Delisha. Blacks and blues. They are really nice birds. Thank you, Del!

We used to be plagued by those ground squirrels too, momg. Then a couple years ago, they all disappeared. Not that I'm complaining. I think I know how that huge hawk that hangs around here got so darn huge.

I hope noone has any more severe weather. Stay safe.

Also I was wondering whether instead of buying Bragg's ACV if I could use the kombucha. Does anyone know?
I have no answer for that, but I do have 4 bottles of Braggs that I use til I get down to the mother. Then I bought a regular gallon of pasteurized ACV & just refill my Braggs bottles, then let them sit for a few weeks.

Also, I had 1/2 gallon of the regular ACV left over late last fall. Since I use metal waterers in the winter, the ACV just sat in the pantry. When I opened it in the spring, it developed a really nice healthy looking mother. Bonus!

Glad everyone made it thru the storms ok.

Was gone most of yesterday and come home to the monster bator spiking and killed my whole batch of chicks that were left in there and the eggs. I had taken out 43 so those are doing well out of the 120 set. So I decided to go buy these today.

The monsters work fine, it's just they are too big to bring in the house and I don't have anywhere to put them to regulate the room temperature to keep them more steady unless I'm home 24/7 watching them which sometimes I just can't be. I sure hope this solves my problem as from what I've read everywhere the new ones are good machines. By next Friday will be setting close to 20 dozen eggs so I need reliability.

Hi All!

BBP.... Sounds like a close catch! Good thing you had broodies handy!

CC... Glad the swelling is going down! Yep, goop is great on scratches. Know how most cat scratches get red, then a bit greenish? Not with goop! A few days and all healed.

Sclark.... Wow! What a hit on the chicks and eggs

Hope the new bators work well for you!

Glad everyone who reported in got through with little or no damage. Hope everyone else fared well.

The chick I brought in didn't make it, didn't really think it would. I also found another dead one in the brooder box. I wonder if she kicked it when scratching. She's not an experienced mom. She doesn't seem to call them that much either. When Jasmine and Storky brood chicks, they never shut up unless they're all tucked in.
I have a fledgling wren that if it makes it through the night will go to the wild life rehab. One of the cats dragged it in but it looks unharmed and active. Trying to collect some bugs for it.

Night All!

SClark, sorry about the eggs, and especially the poor chicks! I'm thinking about ordering some blue bantam Cochin eggs from WetKnollAmy. I'm looking for SQ blues to cross with my brown red rooster. Does anyone else have suggestions for breeders with quality blues or lemon blues?

good morning,

been up since 5:3o listening to the distant thunder..doesn't look like we will get much rain.

keets are getting stinky.. time to go outside .. there is a new batch in the #2 bator..

I have to put a finer mesh floor into the brooder in the chicken coop.. dumb chicks are poking their heads through the floor and getting stuck . this never happened before ?? just goes to show you, chickens always find a new and unique way to kill themselves ..

I will work on my hydraulics today if the weather permits..

Thanks Cindy and Yvette, not only did I take a big loss, the thought of that slow painful death just breaks me. I had the Sportsmans at a steady temp lastnight before bed and checked again this am and right on. Ran to Walmart and grabbed 2 digital probe thermos to make sure the others were on, everythings going well so far. I will load it best I can later today as I have a LONG day with visitation, a review hearing and after a meeting with the soc workers and my daughters AODA person, advocate and other people. I got a good deal on the bators I think, both for $650 the only problem is they came with pheseant/chukar trays and no chicken. I can fit my bantys, guineas and some of the Sussex in those trays but will definitely need bigger for the other chicken eggs. I'll have to check out Ebay or something. That also reminds me I'm sure I lost my guinea eggs now too with the temp spike, I'll candle them tonight and if they are alive I'll move them over to the Sportsmans. All I have left are 4 BLRW, 2 SS and 3 EE out of the monster that are still alive and hoping that they will hatch. One SS is hatched and alive but 2 others had died right away and theirs a BLRW thats partly out but not doing well looks weak and 2 other BLRW that are pipped and chirping away. If any of them make it, they sure will be strong chicks I'm sure. It started raining her about a half hr ago and doesn't seem like it's going to let up, was lightening quit a bit on my way home from town. Looks like it's moving East pretty fast.
