Congrats on the hatch and the chickie order!!

I feel so bad for ours when they are in their breeder pens. They so enjoy their time in the main coop free range. I really do think they get stressed and do not get as good nutrients when they are penned. We have a large dog kennel we rotate the breeding pens to. However it just is not the same as that feee range!

Afternoon To Everyone and Welcome to you new folks. I'm glad your happy with the light brahmas cuties..they sure are charmers, aren't they. Mine come down to the house and want to come in for their treats. Part of the family here ,I guess. They love their freedom for sure.

Time to get outside and enjoy the weather. Plenty to do.

Greetings, WI. Moved here from East Coast almost three years ago. Finishing up first winter with chickens. Just discovered this part of the forums. I've traveled the country and a lot of the world, but I'm glad to call N.WI home now. Funny too. Years ago in my 'day' if someone told me I'd be here I'd have died laughing, and gleefully informed them of their lack of sanity.

now I wonder what took me so long, despite knowing the answer.

Yep posoh, it's hard to imagine how big these girls get....they will dwarf some of the standard breed's roosters. My nest boxes aren't the standard 12x12 that is recommended for most hens. They will always have a place here on the hill. The majestic ones are quite docile...however, like cuties said..don't expect stellar layers for the most part.

Was able to get a few things done outside today. Nice to have the Winter's snow gone for sure. When it dries up a little more, then the serious outside work can be started.

Yes, I would keep the hay moist..make a mounded pile of it rather than spreading it out flat,, just as you would do a compost pile,, I would add the neighbor's horse manure to the pile.. all you can get..

Rhode Island Reds are the perfect chicken to start out with,,
unless you have a way to isolate the breeds from each other,, If you are planning on hatching chicks.. I would stick to one breed to begin with,,
It is much easier to sell pure breeds than it is to sell cross breeds..
You can hardly give cross breeds away,, except to people who are going to just butcher them anyway,,
and people who are going to butcher the chickens, do NOT want small chickens..

do not expect people who take your excess chickens to not butcher them,, once out of your possession they are out of your control..

I don't know if I told about a Maremma LGD that I looked at a few weeks ago.. one whose owner had her all screwed up ? she jumped on people, got up on the furniture and he had her trained to go to bed, which meant run into his bedroom and jump up on his bed.. he was giving her away,,
I flatly turned down the offer.. Oh yes, did I mention that whenever he tried to put a collar on her, he got bitten ??

I just got a call from a guy from Merrill who wants to buy my girl puppy,,
as it turns out, this guy did take that blemished dog from the idiot who owned and "trained" her..
so far he has been bitten 3 times and said that she had him pinned to a dresser once..
he thinks he can turn her around,,

maybe he can.. I hope he can,, but he is not going to have my shadow there in the mean time.

if that dog bites her owners, she will certainly attack another dog,,

and my shadow is not going to be that other dog..

I think the Brahma's are gorgeous. I wonder if it would be bad to add one or two just for their awesome factor, or detrimental for them. I envision a plethora of breeds for the beauty and learning but do not wish to do harm.

Posoh, if you are looking for a calm beautiful and even friendly chicken, Brahma is the way to go! They are amazing. And will coo to you and k ne another.

I know that our chicks are way too young to make hasty decisions. However, I love just sittting with them and watching them grow into themselves. And there is this one little guy that is sticki g out like a sore thumb!! Nice wide backside. Which my line could use some of for sure.
