Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

here I go again,, lost the last post,, puter locked up on me.. why does it wait until I am all done with my typing before it pulls that cr@p ?

I just finished setting 192 more eggs into the hatcher..

the bator looks pretty empty with just 16 dozen left in it..

I dented one of the eggs while transferring,, I put it in anyway,, it is near the front where I can keep any eye on it..

I talked to the cousin of the lady I just hatched for.. she told me that they were picking up every egg they could find and even then ones out on the bare ground in the cold..
sort of what I thought so..

the bird flue,, don't panic,, more than likely if you have it, you know by now.. but stay aware.
I wouldn't bring any new birds into my flock just yet..

I makes me wonder why I don't hear of any geese catching it ..
after all, the authorities keep saying it is spread by migrating birds.. does that exclude geese ??
instead of going along with a theory like" the world is flat", do a little more digging and find out what really is causing it ..

It seems to me that nobody really knows. all theories are just guesses ..

IMHO

I have a broody hen... would like some fertile eggs... who is in the Madison area? Not too picky but picky enough that I want heritage or something different. Do you think a dozen is too many? Thinking about some black copper marans any roos can be butchered for freezer fodder
Cindy omg the fire was scary... and what is going on with Terri O? didn't read back far enough...
Shucks you will be missed at the bash BB... I haven't seen a date either... will you guys fill me in? I see the pizza cutter is ordered!'
Had a great time in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia area last week... vacations are far far too short! Gary will give you his take on downtown Seattle and the lack of public bathrooms at the bash!
Please let the sun shine and the temps hit 60 again!

Terri was selected to be tested by the KNR/state for bird flue,, she passed,, but they are going to test again in about 2 weeks..

the bash is the weekend after Memorial weekend .. better check my info, though.. that is what somebody told me,, I could look it up if I were that ambitious ..

met a guy from the UP this morning at the restaurant,, he did not know Tomski..
doesn't hurt to ask,,

A large chicken can handle a dozen eggs.. to find out for sure, just take any eggs and let her sit on them for a few minutes.. see how many she can cover ..

I read that the flu includes all wild migratory birds including ducks, geese, etc.

Way too much to read! Like Jim said I was negative here. The farm near here that had the birds dying has the National Guard there helping to bury birds on the property. They lost 20,000 chickens and you are all right...they were housed in two buildings and the eggs were sold as "cage free." Buyers beware--of course I am preaching to the choir here I know!
I think they said wild migratory waterfowl spread the disease, dont get sick but are carriers. Chickens and turkeys get it and die. (And that is what they are worried about...the mass producers) I am sure they pay those guys for their birds...not so sure they would pay a small time flock keeper for their losses though. Anyhow, at this moment I still have chickens!

The geese are hatching! I saw 3 today and the boys are all hanging around the nests to gather the young and take care of them until the last egg hatches. It is very cute to watch. The ducks are just starting to lay and the chickens are laying like mad...of course I cannot sell eggs due to the quarantine... we have had omelets all week...I am getting tired of eating eggs. I even make a cake to day that needed 3 eggs!

OK--the bash is coming up...link is in my siggy for those of you that only visit us at this time...I need a smiley with a big pointing finger here!
Have a great night and pray for those of us in the "bad" areas...maybe they could just medicate the migrating flocks? Might be cheaper!

Not that I'd say "don't worry" but maybe "don't panic". A barn full of hundreds/thousands of stressed out chickens is nothing like what most of us have. Stress can make any animal more susceptible to disease. Plus once the disease takes hold in a large population the place becomes a huge germ factory. More virus is harder to fight off.
While I do agree with you almost completely, the AI outbreak is not just infecting the large factory farms. In that article I posted, they specifically mentioned the 3 confirmed infected sites in WI. One of them was a backyard flock.

In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker on Monday declared a state of emergency after three poultry flocks became infected in the past week, according to his office. The infected birds, more than 326,000 in all, were chickens at an egg-laying facility, turkeys and a backyard flock of mixed-breed birds.

I too recommend not panicking, but also to be extra observant of our birds and overly cautious with everything and everyone that may come into contact with our flocks. An ounce of prevention.......

I heard that too a while ago cs. I think they were stressing waterfowl as carriers of the disease but I am not sure if they are susceptible to infection or just hosts to it, or if it was even credible information. They might not want to point to a specific species as being the cause for fear of people going out and killing them all?

Or maybe they just do not know. There are an awful lot of different wild birds out there. Seeing as they do not know how the disease is entering barns, I would "assume" it was from small birds. IMHO

the key word is assume,,
Exactly. Why do you think I used the quotation marks?

I really despise using that word. Nothing but trouble when you assume things. But since I have no evidence and am strictly going off what I have read from the media, I can only hypothesize that small wild birds may have been the culprit in the case of the Jefferson Co. egg producing facility. In any case, it sounds like some pretty scary chit and I hope none of us ever has to experience it firsthand. Thank goodness your flock was in the clear Terri.

Lol Jim. You are funny.

Momgille, BLRW? I am an hour from Madison tho.

Jj!!!!!!!!!
Pm me. I will be heading toward you Saturday.
Let me know I could make a trip I think on Saturday.... she is fussy as all get out and I can't get her to leave the nest despite 3 attempts in a hours time... stubborn gal she will make a good mama.... So the sooner I get her some eggs and relocated her the better off we will all be...Thinking if you have 10 eggs that would be good, she is good a sized mottled java...
