Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good afternoon,

apples do not need a cross pollinator,, but plums do.. any other plum tree will do.. even a tiny tree as long as it gets blossoms..

the tiny apples you describe sound to me like a Quince.. Quince is used for root stock for grafting apples..
the only way to get a true reproduction of an apple is by grafting,,
sometimes the apple tree dies, and the roots send up shoots.. these shoots will be quince if that what was used in the original graft..
quince fruit is very sour..

on the other hand,, the tiny apples could be Thorn Apples.. if they turn red in the fall.. they are excellent for making jelly ..

Yep, flowering crab trees that are pretty for awhile....if they are cherries or apples the fruit will appear in the future...time will tell for sure....great living in the country and learning what's what, eh!

Stopped by a local greenhouse for more plants...pails to cover them overnight til they are larger is the plan...life is good!

Hey iMagen,
I'm in Sheboygan County. My DH is the super gardener. He loves Honey Crisp, so we got two full sized HC trees about 3 or 4 years ago. Actually got some nice sized fruit on them last year, too. DH made a ton of applesauce. The kids love, love, love it. They fight over the empty jar to get every drop out. Makes them sound like a pack of wolves; that's not entirely true, though. (Most of the time!

We have such a problem right now with groundhogs. Oh my Bob, it's AWFUL. DH has shot three of them, dug up their holes, etc. Those suckers are relentless. Any tips for dealing with groundhogs!?!?

Bigz, sorry about the plants. That stinks.

FirstChic, I agree with CC. Sounds more like crabapple if the fruit is small. You can make jelly out of that, but it takes a metric ton of sugar!

We have a monster groundhog that digs everywhere. It has been digging under the barn and other buildings, which is going to affect the integrity of the buildings if we allow it to dig further. We keep filling up the holes and stuffing them with rocks but the bugger keeps at it. The hubs keeps the rifle handy while he works on the fence but he hasn't been quick enough to get it before it pops back underground in the field. I also wish I knew a foolproof way to get rid of it!

Dang, never thought about putting pails over plants....well, don't have any anyway. I lost about 8 pepper plants and 4 tomato plants.

Ok, Ladies tell me what this is. I will post the other two trees tomorrow. My internet is way too slow to download them all at once.
Can you get close ups on the individual fruits? Also are there any spikes along the branches? They would be like tiny, pointy branches and that would mean hawthorn. Same as thorn apple I guess.

You folks in Waupaca have some strange critters that come around. I don't have any predators around me. I live in a swampy area so that may be the reason. I have heard that Foxes or Wolves don't like really wet places.

It does have thorns on it, so it must be a hawthorn. It will make fruit later on after the flowers fall off. But they are real tiny.
