Hi Vicki!

When we lived in Ft Wayne, Indiana we always ran into a nice Amish man when we went to buy our chicken feed at the mill - I think we were on the same schedule. Once he gave our from out-of-town visitors a buggy ride and he showed us around his farm and woodworking shop. He told us there were some common misconceptions about the Amish and what they believe. Their choice of a simple lifestyle is less religious than it is practical to them.

Hey! If something happens to the power grid and the Internet, etc., they won't notice at all, they'll just go on as they always do. Not us, though, Did you ever stop to think about how dependent we are on our grid and the Internet? We are really pretty vulnerable in that regard. Scary to think about.

The groundhogs are digging under the fence now - they just will not give up and they are being very elusive. So far they've left the peas alone and the tomatoes have been untouched for awhile. They found my broccoli and bush bean replants but the pole beans seem to be in good shape. I'm getting a lot of pea pods and I can see the summer squash starting to form. Tomatoes are looking healthy with some green fruit starting. It's not as disastrous as it looked like it was going to be.

Anyone interested in BLRW roosters? I have 6 - Cuties is getting one on Sunday and I'm keeping one. The rest go to freezer camp unless someone wants to buy them from me. PM me if you'd like more info. They don't hold still for photos so these are a little fuzzy

As with all people, there are good and bad (or what we perceive as such). I do love to learn about the way certain people live.
Quote: Irishrovr, everything I do is to learn homesteading and living off the grid. I want to rely only on me (and my husband, of course). Chickens, garden, composting.... it's all baby steps to living off the grid. I wish we could all return to a simpler way of living.

Sorry so many Irish! You will have to pick through the chicks next year ;)
Thunder was super sassy for his ride to ight!
I am pooped!not used to that whole getting up at 1:30! It always takes me a bit to get back into the swing. Sure wish I could post pictures too!

Hi Vicki,

Welcome! I am originally from Bloomington and have family living in Lancaster. Beautiful area!

good evening,

I am not getting notified when people post,,,,,again..
hence I was almost 3 pages behind..

I worked with some Amish men one weekend to start framing up a house.. we had a blast.. they had really good sense of humor, and they really knew their carpentry..
and their wives really know how to pack a lunch..

the Amish did not fight in the wars, but the ones around here served their time as hospital aides etc..

they will use gasoline engines.. but only to run machinery,, they have hay balers run by gasoline engines, but the whole rig is pulled by horses.. no tractors..

there are varying degrees of Amish communities.. some shy away from using the gasoline engines.

as of today I am done working on my lawn mower.. I will have to wait for the part to arrive, if it ever does..

I bought 300 pounds of feed today.. this might be the last time before we butcher the 85 plus chickens..

Zeke is getting more settled down and more sociable.. Still, when he eats, he is always on the alert .. takes a few bites, then looks all around, like a wild dog..
surprisingly, Frankie has taken to him.. they even both eat our of the same dish at the same time.. something she would never do with Gus..
