Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all - finally getting a day to kick back so decided to catch up on the happenings of the cheeseheads.

Welcome all newbies!

Jim - new pup sounds great and really like the choice in name.

Hens/Roos & Cuties - congrats to you both and your kids. So much work by parents and the kids and so rewarding I'm sure when fair day finally arrives. I was working at our Green County fair this week and loved watching the kids with their animals.

Glad there weren't any injuries or major damage from the storms over the past few weeks. The storms have been crazy, we were hit in late June. It wasn't called a tornado but the way some of the trees and items were tossed around it sure looked like one. We lost a gazebo screen house and one of those tarp covered storage units, but the worst was the chimney and soffit. Wouldn't you know, we just finished that roof last year . . . but could've been worse.

Other than clean up from the storm we've been pretty busy with the gardens and birds. Our 160 meat birds were just released to their pasture yesterday and not a moment too soon, the roos are getting feisty. This is a really healthy bunch so far, we only lost two in the first couple of days. We were so pleased with the Black Australorps we had gotten from Abendroths last year that we decided to give their Cornish Rock X a try.

As far as our layers . . . we lost one of the older RIR's last week to a predator - major lock down for a while now. Too many young out learning/hunting for food. We even had a young Heron scoping out the gold fish in our pond (net over that now).
The good news:
We set six GLW and six Welsummer eggs under our broody this spring (thanks Hen & Roos!) and we ended up with one Wellie and five GLW's. They are now 13 weeks old and the Wellie is definitely a boy. He has a rather sickly crow right now but he's working at it. Since we already have our RIR roo we don't really want another. He is free to a fellow cheesehead if we can make connections. Here are a couple of pics, I'm not an expert when it comes to showing birds, but I think he's a real looker - and I'm sure with continued practice that will be a robust crow!

Stay cool everyone and if someone knows of a home for little Wellie Roo - pm me.

Oh, my word, so nice it must be to have siblings.....that is what I missed in life....do not know who my parents are....going to get a DNA test done next month to at least find out my nationality.

. Watcha gonna do? Baby spilled my cup of hot coffee on him, tough baby, did not get any significant burns, just a little red. Let Bandit out while the chickens were out today.....DS let him get fairly close, yelled at him, he came right back and then ignored them the rest of the time. We will have to stay out with him tho, because if the chickens run, as they do at times, I am sure he will give chase. Little chicks are getting so big, about half the size of the older chickens. Will be able to introduce them at the end ofnext month.Any sage advice anyone want to give me on doing that? Neighbor down the road is moving and giving us a set of 10 nesting boxes her son made.....she has Banties, that I thought were regular chickens, Barred Plymouth Rocks and Cochins. Don't know what she is doing with them. Would I be able to mix with my regulars if they are offered to me?

I have 8 hens, should say (4 hens) and (4 soon to be hens) and 1 (soon to be rooster).....don't know what the ratio is for hens to roos, would two roos be to many?

The fish fry sounds delicious!!

We had a 39th birthday celebration for my oldest son last night. Had a one-month old and three-day-old in attendance. Love those babies!!

The guest of honor tonight for supper will be a Freedom Ranger cockerel - dressed weight of 6 pounds, cooked on the grill (beer-can chicken style), along with freshly dug potatoes, green beans, leafy green salad. My youngest loves to bake. He plans to make this using raspberries. We've already tried it with mulberries.

your 8:1 is good to go..
too many roosters makes it tough on the hens..

I'm relatively new to the chicken biz and last year was the first time we decided to keep a rooster from a hatch. We have plenty of hens so the ratio isn't the issue for us. We will be integrating the spring hatch in a few weeks and if we still have Wellie we can see how it goes. For us this issue is how he and our RIR roo (Rufus) will get along. Rufus is a mellow rooster and we don't know if he would become more aggressive with competition. Probably would be fine since Rufus has his harem of 26 girls and we think the spring hatch has five pullets in with the Wellie cockerel, so maybe each rooster would be content with the mix. Never can tell. Here is a pic of Rufus he keeps a good watch over his flock.
As my hubby says - I sometimes over think things when it comes to my chickies.

Nice weekend, though too hot and humid for me!

Cuties & Co spent some time here yesterday afternoon and we had a lot of fun chasing chickens. We were having such a good time that I forgot to get the camera out and take pictures. The best thing that happened was that Scott found a picture of himself as a child while flipping through some old hunting/fishing magazines in the store. What a treasure! I'm sure he still has a big grin on his face!

Ruger now has a new home - that leaves one roo for me and four for freezer camp. The neighbors are probably pretty happy about that!

Have a great week, everyone, and stay cool!!
