Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I'm loving this rain! I know my garden loves it - I could hear a big slurping sound coming from that direction today!

Thanks, God, for the free water!

My flock was apparently loving it also - they were all out and about, getting so drenched I didn't recognize them.

Tomorrow should be a good harvest as I wasn't going to go out in the downpour to pick.

A neighbor gave me a couple of contacts for butchering... er... I mean outfitting for freezer camp. One is in Wittenberg and there's an Amish guy in Dakota (near Westfield). Are there any others nearby that you all know about? I'm trying to keep the feathers but the guy in Wittenberg won't skin them. I don't know about the Amish guy yet.

@Sclark73
Beautiful birds unfortunately you just reminded me that I made my list of birds I'm interested in way to short lol. I also love speckled Sussex and my DH2B had wanted buckeyes all spring but we couldn't find any around here. And hedamora's are a breed I think I would like to get into. Gosh there are so many many breed how does anyone choose? Lol mostly this year we had planned on trying a bunch out and then going from there to decide on some that are our favorites. Mostly though I am just interested in anything that you guys think is good for a beginner and can be tamed again sorry to be a broken record but we want nothing aggressive we're not afraid to send something to freezer camp of it needs to be but we do have nieces and nephews that are very little(18months) and up. Obviously we never have children around the chickens unattended particularly small children but you all know how fast things can happen. As it is we are on the verge of having to put an end to a rooster that has been unpredictable with us even I'm not sure as he's a hatchery bird but I think he may be a very awful golden Laced sebright though he looks more red laced and is not hen feathered. As a chick he also didn't look like a sebright but he was the sweetest chick there has been such a change in him. Could this be because he's the top roo? Is there a chance a different home perhaps with mature large fowl roos would turn him around?
A bantie rooster in with standard roos will definitely give him an attitude adjustment. Banty breed roos are usually notorious for being too big for their britches. Do you have any pics of him?

If you are open to mixed breed orps, you could have a few eggs from my flock for your bator. I currently have a well mannered lavender roo with my girls (see my siggy).

We had some rain down here but not quite a soaker.

I can still hear the tomatoes whining.

Staci, Anellia is a beauty. As momg said, great job! You have had your hands full with that one & all your hard work has sure paid off. Great job g'ma.

What breeds/colors do you have besides orps? And yes absolutely I would love some of your eggs. Thank you for offering.
We had planned on not having roos with the layers because we are planning on selling some eggs I know it doesn't effect them nutritionally but can cause blood spots correct? Anything else?

Honestly if anyone would be interested in my bantam roo that needs his panties resized I would be glad for you to take him he's really not big enough for freezer camp and I find I really don't want to kill the chick that was my favorite. He's healthy and happy he free ranges and is beautiful but I currently don't have any roos that can reeducate him. It worries me about our other three confirmed roos even though they show no aggression and Nugget in fact likes to cuddle sometimes but two of them aren't yet crowing even though Nugget does crow its so cute. If anyone has any suggestions about Coco please feel free to comment. I will post pictures tomorrow. Thanks all have a good night.

I pretty much just have orps. Sorry.

I have never had blood spots in any of my eggs that I know of. And I have had roosters with my hens for many years. I think some things that people post aren't always the norm?

Awesome mind if I ask for more information? English or American? doesn't matter just wondering (I love the pics of the buff English orps I heard someone describe them as basketballs with heads I love it! Lol) also what colors do you have? And please don't misunderstand I'm ecstatic that you have orps I love our orps and I've been wanting lavenders since I found out that they existed. I love the laid back and gentle orp temperament and their sweet dispositions. Our friendliest birds other than one of the isa browns we got named Lily that my DH2B joking calls my "other" dog as she follows me around and causes mischief and is very curious. I have a sheltie named Molly too.

Now about the layers do you sell any of your eggs for eating? jw its interesting that you've never had problems. I also read that fertile eggs don't stay good as long is that misinformation too?

Memo to self for next year: Plant more beets!

I got a few pints of pickled beets done and I made some pickled eggs with the leftover brine. I don't know if I can wait to taste them!

My customers buy a lot of zucchini but not much yellow summer squash. Who has some good recipes?

Anyone out there butcher their own chickens?

sometimes I marvel at the misinformation that is offered up on byc..

think this through,, just how long does a person have to hold eggs until they are no good ?
In today's world, eggs get used up way before they have time to go bad.
a fertilized egg can be set to incubate even up to a month after it is laid..

to put it bluntly, roosters do not cause blood spots..
I never kept a fertilized and a non-fertilized egg to see which one spoiled first, so I cannot give any personal opinion about that..

Irish,, I have butchered thousands of chickens .. we still do our own..
within the next few weeks we will be doing about 85 meaties..

Thank you Jim for clearing that up. Sorry all to sound so ignorant I promise any ignorance is purely unintentional lol I am a newbie but I have done a ton of reading apparently I should have just found you guys first. So then just to reiterate Jim when selling eggs so long as they get refridgerated then it doesn't matter if they are fertile or not?

Hi All!

Stacey.... WOW! You all did well! The baby looks so cute! Growing fast!

CD(chickendreams),this you now lol
I leave my eggs out all week then wash them for selling Sat. night. After cleaning they should go in the frig because the bloom is gone, until then, unwashed eggs are pretty sterilized. Never had a complaint.

Well, with 6 roosters that were here ahead of him gone, "Blue" the BLRW that is about a year old, finally crowed! LOL this afternoon he stood right in front of me and let one rip! Just like he was showing off and thanking me! Maybe he can grow some tail feather now!
