Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Beautiful August Day Today.....yep x2 0n it being pullet dustergirl. Can't comment cd....I don't add to the bator.

The gardens are really coming on to harvest fast....we did a double batch of relish yesterday...kina a pain to do, cause it's a 2 day process, but worth it all year long....the red potatoes are starting to dry up, so I'll be digging them soon too.

I've read that chickens are the most abused farm animal....really makes me sick! Hope you can help those hens out Irish...it's the right thing to do!

I think that's a smart bird Cind...good and safe up there.

Have fun...bigz

Hi everyone,

All is going well here, coop is getting to the point where it needs to be cleaned. Hopefully in about a month we will start getting eggs!

I've been watching my flock to try to figure out my roos... I have 2 for sure in a flock of 15 but have one EE I can't figure out. This would be a 3-month-old. S/he has the legs of a roo but looks hen in the face to me. Guesses?

Very pretty! Looks like a pullet to me.

Hi thank you for your input i would like to hear more about how you do it please bc I've been getting very mixed answers and I don't want these chicks to be lonely. Yes I have an auto turner. What about the change in humidity? Will that damage any new eggs I would add? This is only my second incubation and I well ...please just tell me everything. I don't want to screw up by adding more eggs. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I have 3 sportsman cabinet bators.. I use one mainly for my hatcher, but if there is no room in it, I just turn off the turner, raise the humidity and take care of the hatching chicks.. when they are done hatching, I return everything back to normal and turn the turners back on..

I try to keep at least a week between batches of eggs.. that way I am not opening the hatcher/bator while some are just starting to pip..

the extra humidity will not hurt the incubating eggs for the couple of days that the early chicks are hatching..

this is how I do it.. you will find a hundred different answers on byc.. many will not agree with me.. I do not mind that..

I sometimes have over 1000 eggs incubating at a time,, but normally it numbers from 4oo to 6oo when I am in the swing of things....

.......jiminwisc......

ETA:
I have large brooder pens where I put the chicks as they hatch,, I don't worry about the ages of the chicks..
usually hold them in smaller brooders until they are about 4 or 5 days old..

I had a bunch of EEer's (Americanas) one time.. never could pick out the roos..

Momgille, when I bought that flock last fall there were four males with badly embedded bands. I cut them out, packed the wounds with Neosporin and within a week they were all better. When I first saw them I was horrified but there was very little blood loss during the procedure and by just cutting the band and pulling with firm pressure they came right out. I hope you can catch all her birds with bands and remove them. Good luck!

On a happier note...I have chicks hatching today! So far I have one buff Brahma and one partridge. Will be setting dark Brahma eggs tomorrow but still looking for some good lights to hatch. If you all know of anyone with light Brahma hatching eggs for sale please let me know.

@Huntress78
Congrats on the buff Brahma baby and the partridge we got a buff bantam from TSC this year but lost him/her after three days we were very sad to lose her? As she/he was such a very sweet chick.

Thanks I spoke to our friends and she's going to ask about some more eggs as they're technically the father's birds and he may want them since mine seem to be developing fingers are crossed :) or maybe they'll just keep feeding eggs to the pigs *shakes head*
If I get more eggs I think I'll try doing it your way. Do you have comparable hatches when not staggering that way vs when adding more a week later and upping humidity?

cd, I see you are south of Janesville. There might be someone near you that could help you out with hatching eggs. We are a huge bunch of enablers here.

Made it to the farmers market today. I got some corn that was JUST picked no more than 6 hours before. It was sooo good! Got some tomatoes, potatoes and a few other goodies too!

Birds seem to be doing good.

Night All!
