Ready to rant... neighbors hen just escaped a hawk attack under our deck. It was 6:00 a.m. Heard clucking and thumping. She doesn't close up the coop at night I am thinking. But in checking to see what all the ruckus was I thought I was going to find a pile of feathers.I noticed the poor thing is limping and I see blue. Sky blue at the bottom of her lef. A band, rather just a bit of band can be seen. The skin has grown over it and she is limping terribly. How can someone one not see this and react. I know she just got this chicken from her brother... He had to have put the band on it as a pullet. He had to capture it in order to bring it over to her house. They had to handle that hen when they brought it over to her house...I just sent her a message via facebook. If she doesn't do anything I may just go over there and do my best to release the band.... Some people GRRRRRRRRR

get a wire cutter or better yet a finger nail cutter that looks like a wire cutter..
go visit your neighbor..
that chicken is going to lose that leg and then her life.. maybe not in that order..

some people don't realize that a chicken's leg gets fatter as it grows, I guess..

to the newbie, you can add eggs anytime.. I do it all the time.. try to add them with about a week between batches..

then when it is lock down , just treat the eggs that are due normally,, stop the turner for the 3 days,, it won't hurt the incubating eggs to not turn for that long,,

I am assuming you have an auto turner ..

Jim, she just responded to my message that both of the birds her brother gave here have bands like that only that one limps.... She works as a Nurse Practioner and she said she doesn't think she can remove it.... **** people....She can take care of people but not her birds IDK... Guess I will be capturing birds tonight and releasing bands. I have scarlex and blue kote. I am sure this is not going to be blood free. But once the bands are off I know they will heal quickly.... Just thinking this bird is 2 years old and how long it has been in pain makes me sick. You know these are those zip ties.... Glad I saw it, Gary said he saw it last week but I was thinking it was bumblefoot but I saw that band and my blood pressure zoomed.

Hi everyone,

All is going well here, coop is getting to the point where it needs to be cleaned. Hopefully in about a month we will start getting eggs!

I've been watching my flock to try to figure out my roos... I have 2 for sure in a flock of 15 but have one EE I can't figure out. This would be a 3-month-old. S/he has the legs of a roo but looks hen in the face to me. Guesses?

Thanks for reminding me to deband my roo. It is still loose but, I think I can tell him from the hens by now.

Thanks to all for the garden/onion advice!! I'll try again next year.

Zucchini (and summer squash) is going crazy - I've been keeping up with the chopping and freezing of what doesn't sell. I've got to make a few loaves of Z-bread soon. Beets are harvested and they get pickled this evening. Harvard beets - YUM! Tomatoes will be ripening before I know it. Canning stuff is at the ready. I'm going to try out my Christmas dehydrator on them, too.

Wish I had planted more peas!

@Cindlady
Idk why they feed them to the pigs my friend said something about extra protein I was just horrified here I've been looking and looking for eggs with no idea theirs are fertile and they're feeding them to a bunch of pigs- ugh goodness me. So you think it would be okay if I got more today really? Even without having a hatcher?

Anyone else want to chime in? Please do.

Hi thank you for your input i would like to hear more about how you do it please bc I've been getting very mixed answers and I don't want these chicks to be lonely. Yes I have an auto turner. What about the change in humidity? Will that damage any new eggs I would add? This is only my second incubation and I well ...please just tell me everything. I don't want to screw up by adding more eggs. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
