Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Loved the rain but not the low flying clouds after. I don't breath fog! Next week is going to be hot and humid too. Not fun.

Night All!

@momgille let go of the anger, feel glad that you freed those birds from the leg bands and the woman has learned something. She cared enough to cut them all off once you pointed it out to her. If I recall correctly from your first post, she didn't put them on the birds - her brother did.

Can I get your apple grape jam recipe please?
2 cups grape juice (homemade or store bought)
2 cups apple juice (store or home, must be unsweetened. it comes with natural sugars, add no sugar yourself)
1 box SureJell (there are two types, you want the one for cooked jelly)
5 cups sugar

Mix SureJell and all the juices in a pot.
Stir and bring to a vigorous boil for one minute.
Add all sugar, stir and boil one minute.
Turn off heat, fill the jars, seal the jars and water bath for 5 minutes. (water bath refers to a simmering boil in mason quality canning jars, remove from water and set aside)

Refrain from moving the jars for a week, they like to settle into their new form. Enjoy!

Gentle Evening Weather before I place the brats on the grill in a minute.

Yep, chickens are the " spillers of feed " it's why the ability to free range makes happy chickens....they will feed outside all day...finding fun things to eat all day, and spilling nothing that costs money to replace....my birds are happy free, and miserable when being penned up...kinda off topic...just sayin.

gotta go grill...bigz
Same here, my birds free range and are happy for it. Meats, layers, they all range. The downside is the occasional predator attack. Since the guineas took to the woods we have had no attacks. And a couple of months ago I watched our newer rooster fight off then give chase to a fox.

I have 4 coops although 3 are in one. In the meat coop (16x10) I built a 4x8 "nursery" coop 4' off the floor, suspended from the roof so as to not be in the way on the floor. It houses younger layers who roost in view of the older layer flock, they are separated by chicken wire. They get to know each other without the usual pecking order mayhem. Of course the pecking order will be dealt with eventually, but it's not so brutal this way. Opposite of that is my "hospital/brooder coop. 2x3 and same elevation as the nursery. I can isolate an injured or ill bird....or place very young till they achieve nursery status. All were built with cleaning in mind, it's all modular and can be disassembled, removed to an outdoor area and throughly washed. I do this once a week or so depending on need. The layer coop is 10x10 and under the same roof as the meat coop, also modular with 3 nesting boxes, several levels of walkways and hides and a roost at 6' off the ground. It's insulated for bitter cold nights and heated when temps get sub-zero.

Newer birds are kept cooped in the nursery and taken out to a fenced garden to acquire free range experience and skills. By the time they are accustomed to the older layers they outgrow the need to a fenced area and are set out to find their place in the flock.

We are now incubating some of ours and some for friends. The addiction is growing.

Afternoon all....sounds like a good set-up Er, and it all comes from lesson's learned, eh! It's amazing how simple things can make a huge difference for not only the birds, but the handler too!

Been down with a bad puter modem....works today though...so far.

The gardens are still crazy....I need to get after that bow of mine for some warm up shots...the hunt is closing in fast now.

Good to hear the hens are walkin good again Mom...you did good!

Later....bigz

Aw :% first day back after vacation is always hard!
The kiddos go back to school tomorrow. And I am back on 12's. Ugh
Chickens are well. I am looking forward to some of the call ducks finding their new home. Sold quite a few of the turkeys. And then we are about done for the year.
I am very excited for the orps to grow out. Blake has decided that chocolate is his favorite Orp color :)
Hope you all have a good week!
