Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I originally had a very long post here but while trying to get the photo upload option to show up I lost it. Some of you seen on FB my latest project. What started out as a new octagon coop this spring has now turned into my building me a small new house that will attach to my addition and the south side will be attached to my chicken run. The whole idea on it was to have something for myself and to be able to sit and watch the birds while I drink my coffee. Crazy I know but with all my health problems I never know from one day to the next what will be so just want some joy out of life. So here are the photos and what I've accomplished in the past 3 days. Today I will be working on the outter ring of the octagon to get the floor framed.

It's not letting me load more photos right now.

Good job Stacy...I could use a carpenter like you here for many projects on the mind....hope it works out well for you...great start with a finish closing in I'm sure!

Busy canning here like always this time of year. Hate to bore anyone with the effort...but a whole year of good stuff in the pantry and freezer is a good thing here.

Not so much now with the growing season going on..but....during the off garden season, I carry empty canning jars down the steps every day...saving money and eating well. It makes the garden effort a good choice.

Be safe....bigz

hi all,
I got up at 4AM today,, after 6 I went to town and bought a few donuts,, came home and had donuts and coffee for breakfast.. then Annie and I butchered 12 more pullets.
makes 45 in the freezer now.. about 35 or so to go.. hard to count chickens while they are milling around and all over the property ..
a few of them dressed out at 5 1/2 pounds..

this afternoon I went and did my lawn mowing job..

I think it will be early to bed tonight..

I planted only 6 tomato plants this year,, we weren't planning on doing any canning.. but they are accumulating, so it looks like we will be doing a batch anyhow, soon..

the beans are blossoming again, so we probably will have another round of picking for somebody..
we will pick just enough for meals for us..

Hello,

I need some advice. For the last four days our 5 chickens ( 3 black aust. and 2 buff orps) will not go into their hen house at night. They will go up the ramp and sit on the porch of the house. They are about 4 months old now. The hen house is plenty big, the bedding is clean and fresh. It is well ventilated but not drafty. There are two perches in there with plenty of room for all 5. Due to the fact that there are some times when we have to go out of town overnight I was hoping that I would not have to shut the door on them every night. For several weeks prior to this they went in every night on their own with the door open. Tonight I shooed them into the house and shut the door. The enclosed run has a nice roof and is completely enclosed with poultry mesh around a chain link fence so I am not worried about predators. My question: Is there anyway to correct this or am I going to have to shut the door every night when I am home?

I have to coax a couple of the newer hens into the coop at night. They are always the last to go in - maybe because they are bottom of the pecking order and want to make sure the older gals are settled in on the roost for the night?? Sometimes I have to get out the treats and lead them in slowly by dribbling treats in front of them (sometimes the chickaroos who are roosting will get down from the roost and go outside so I'm careful not to make a fuss about it!) and other times I can just keep walking around behind them until they go through to door. Perhaps they are trying to stay cooler in the run on these hot and humid nights??

Ht All!

That's what I was thinking, maybe they just think it's cooler outside.

Stacy.... wow!

Had to laugh today, the pecking order here is the turkey, the guineas, the roosters (in their own order) the older hens (in their own order) the cockrels, then the pullets. Well, during "snack time" one of the guineas was chasing the pullets from the treats. Prettyboy (head roo) started to defend them. 2 guineas started to gang up on him with the others on the way. The turkey did not stand for this! He chased the whole group of guineas out of the treat zone! LOL BTW... my guineas are bullies! This spring if I have a broody hen I think I'll get her some guinea hatching eggs and get rid of these bullies!

Night All!
