Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Stacy, hope you feel better so you can keep going.

We live in Burlington, I keep checking Craigslist for birds. No hatchery in the area. In the spring some of the feed stores have chicks.

Nothing New here..... Night All!

Framed back door with windows on each side.

Penelope hard at work.

Door I revamped yesterday. Not sure if I'm going to add a window on top or just mimic the bottom but want to split it for a barn door effect. Their will also be a small deck out this door as it will open directly into my chicken run and want to be able to sit on the porch and watch the birds.

Kitchen

Kitchen again and living room on left.

Half of the house is wrapped.

Well Wyoming, I have just two BLRW roosters myself and although I have tried Craigs list have had no nibbles. I was just asking $5 apiece, not giving them away, rather eat the myself.
Since it is just the two will it be so horrible to use my big stock pot in the kitchen rather than drag the stuff outside? I don't have a propane turkey fryer and would have to use the camp stove or a grate over the fire pit. I also heard better to have the water temp to 160 for scalding? I have the ice chest etc... and will just use a noose for the feet to hang em no cones here. Since these are young roosters will they be okay fried or beer butt? They have been just eating regular feed last month and free ranging, so will not be fatty. If not then I may as well skin them and use for chicken and dumplings.
Working on a perennial bed that I haven't done anything with for the last couple of years... I like things in some sort of order and the phlox, cone flowers and joe pye-eye weed have gone crazy and need taming. Nice to have a retired man in the house, getting so many things done even though the daylight is getting shorter each day.

Good Friday all! On Wisconsin!!

Is it good friday already ?

I am taking a well deserved break.. I just plugged in the motor to see how the chain and sprockets will line up.. looks like it is a "go ahead and finish".. all easy stuff to do from here to the end..

we will be butchering next week, pretty much for sure ..
MomGill and Wyo, bring your birds here and run them through the plucker..

Mom Gill, you can do the scalding in the house, but there will be the wet feather odor ..
heat the water on your stove, then have the slave labor carry it outside for you..
and 160 is way too hot.. 140F to 145F is better.. you can get by with up to 150F for hand plucking, but even that is too hot for the auto plucker ..

Fish Fry Friday Again....for those with a couple birds to process....simply use a large pot...the water bath caners work well...bring your water to temp....without a plucker...I prefer 150f.....then carry your canner outside to the picnic table or your special place...dunk til the air bubbles stop...prolly 30 seconds or a minute....start with the wing feathers first...if they don't pull...dunk again...it's easy peasy...just a few hands on moments....you will enjoy doing it outside....

Fish inside tonight...Baked cod with baked potatoes....

where did you catch the cod ?

when plucking a chicken, don't pull the feathers off by the handfuls,, just rub the feathers the "wrong way" this will pull most of the pin feathers off, too..

I always make the man behind the counter throw the fish to me, so I can honestly say I caught them,
You need to visit Seattle Pioneer Market Jim home of the fish throwing, its a big tourist attraction. They overcharge for the fish but the fun is catching a fish on the fly... Thanks for hints Jim and Brett... I had already thought about the wet feather smell, but the weather will be nice a crisp, so heat it indoors and carry it outside with a hose near by. Last time I was around a chicken butchering was age 5... and then gramps used a block didn't contain them... they chased you without their heads until the dropped. Think that was worse than those flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz...
