Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere in can buy chicks or started pullets in southeast WI. I recently bought chicks and got then through the mail. We had catastrophic results.. more then half died within the first day or 2. I called they hatchery and they said it could be from a bad shipment. It was cold and there was no heating pack in the box. I would love to just go pick up my own chicks

You came along at a good time, everyone was just doing a hatch a long. You will get some offers.

Hello just throwing this out there in this thread. since its wi , I am looking for antigen for testing my birds. If anyone has a bottle and has already tested their flock for the year. I will buy it or if your looking to buy a new one for the new season and may be close by we could share and split cost since they are a 1000 doses per bottle.

I am located near holy hill

I got mine last year from Klema Feed in Franksville. This year my wife and I are going to check this place out. A little more expensive, but figure we'd take a look.

Did you have good luck with Klema? Ill look into the farm fresh as well. We also live near Caledonia Feed and I called them, they can order chicks for people too. Im just nervouse about mail order chicks since I had such bad luck.

Easter Afternoon to all... I'm fighting to keep my eyes open right now. Turn out was good Jim, and I did manage to bring home a gallon Ice cream pail full of eggs and ham and quite a few coffee cake deserts that were left over too. It won't go to waste here, that's for sure.

I'm sure others will chime in about hatcheries down your way Crystal, or some might have chicks for sale also.

Prolly hit the lazyboy for a short ride...

Yes,we ordered a few breeds of 1 day old chicks. Out of the 15 we ordered, all lived. I did end up with 2 roosters ,that we gave away eventually. All 13 hens are doing fine. Though we did give another 2 away to friends. We want to get another few this year to keep the flock "young".

Thank you! Maybe Ill try there. Did you use medicated feed? I keep trying to figure out why some of chicks are still dying at like 5 days of age. Im wondering if they had coccidosis or something and are passing it to each other. They do well then all of a sudden are ill.

We did give medicated feed, but this was my wife's and I first chickens ever. So it was a learning experience. A guy I was talking to said we didn't need medicated with a fresh coop and new chicks. He told me the medicated feed was for bringing new chicks into an environment that has already had chickens. If this is true or not,I don't know,I'm sure the people here will chime in.

Lots to comment about,

Any hatchery I ever bought from would replace any chicks that died that close to arrival.
The reason that they are still dying is probably because of the poor start they had.

Find a feed store/mill near you that gets chicks from Sunnyside hatchery. I have done this and have great success with the chicks.
Call Sunnyside and they will tell you the nearest feed store that they deliver to.
the price for chicks is the same as if you ordered them delivered by the USPS .
Sunnyside delivers the chicks with their own truck. way better care for the chicks..

Sunnyside will have started pullets available also. You will have to pre-order them, I think ..

Go to the Weyawega swap if you can make it. there are usually pullets there.

be prepared to pay about $15.oo/each for the started pullets. maybe more $$.

Cindy, I will take a picture of my frying pans. Annie ordered off of a TV ad. there is a little old lady advertising them,, I think she paid $18.95 for one and the second was free..
last year Annie bought one of those diamond studded ones. it works great also, but she paid almost $100.oo for it.
There is also another ad for another pan demonstrated by a man. I can't give you a report about that one, since we didn't get one.

p.s. what hatchery did you buy your chicks from ?
