Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Jim, we got our chicks from Back Forty in Shawano. We got 26 and they are all still alive. We got some Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, Spelling off?. Silver Wyandottes, and Buff Orpingtons. Amazing how fast they are growing. We got them on the 10th of this month and their tail feathers are about an inch long. Everytime we go to the brooder they have gotten bigger. Our older girls are doing fine and laying 10 out of 16.....or maybe more, we get 9 or 10 eggs one day and 5 or 6 the next, so maybe they are all laying. One of the WellSummers chews me out big time when I stick my hand under her to feel for eggs. The rest are pretty good though. About a month ago, the Rooster which is a huge RIR hit the back of my hand with her talon. My hand immediately swelled up with blood all across the back. Went to the ER cause I did not know if anything was broken.....it was not but the hand was black, blue yellow red and purple for quite a while.....all better now. Have a good day and good luck to all the baby chicks.

Some of those roos can be real mean buggars!

good tuesday morning,
I am going to be pulling a few boards off of the lumber pile and preparing them for making a 50# feeder for chickens.

as it is , I am adding feed every other day, once a week seems like a better idea .

Spent yesterday completely redoing the inside of the coop. Shortened the bank of nesting boxes and still have 10 for the 14 to choose from. Turned it sideways and made a "roosting ladder" for them. Plus got a good spring clean up done. Feel so much better for the girls now. That was a stinky job though. What I couldn't believe is that one of my barred rocks was sitting in the nest when we were cutting the extra boxes off and even though it was sending major vibrations through the set she wouldn't move. Brave girl.

she will probably lay a scrambled egg.

I got all the wood pieces cut and re-cut for 2 sides and the bottom of the feeder.

I came into the house to get my vest on, it is still chilly in the garage/shop.

have a lot of edge gluing to do.
using biscuit cutter and biscuits for lining up the pieces.

@jvls1942 I am really interested in seeing what you are cooking up. DH has an idea for a bulk feeder for our coop also, so any ideas will be an inspiration for us. Hope it works like you have want it to!

I will be taking pictures of the feeder as I go along.

I am building this one with finely ground oats and corn in mind.
ground feed has a tendency to "bridge" ,, (hang up and not drop to the bottom) ..
So I am making this one wider at the bottom than at the top. so instead of the feed wedging and hanging up, it should just keep coming down as they eat away at the bottom.
they will be able to eat from two sides. so I will have a total of 64 inches of trough .
If I figured it correctly, I should be able to empty a 50# bag of feed into it with a little room to spare so I don't have to wait until it is bone empty before adding feed..

I hope to make it so that they don't waste any feed either.

right now I have half of the pieces glued and setting. I ran out of clamps, so I will have to do the other half tomorrow.

I didn't realize I had so many clamps that don't work..

those flat bar clamps work nicely, until the threads strip out. you can't beat the pipe clamps..

Jim- did you see my recent post about the black walnut syrup taste?

Yes I did, sorry I didn't comment..
I am quite surprised.. I figured it would have a nutty taste, or a bitter taste..
I took a good look at my trees this week.. I think they will be big enough to tap in about, ohhh, 25 years.. they are about 20 years old now, and a few of them might be 8" in diameter..

I was in the impression that maple trees that were tapped for sap develope dark streaks in the lumber..
somebody told me that a long time ago..
IDK if it is true or not..

The Political Chicken

Why did the chicken cross the road?

DONALD TRUMP: We will build a big wall to keep illegal chickens from crossing the road. We will have a door for legal chickens.

JOHN KERRY: We will trust the chicken to tell us whether it crossed the road or not.

CHRIS CHRISTIE: We need to water-board that chicken to find out why it crossed the road.

RAND PAUL: It’s none of our business why the chicken crossed the road.

NANCY PELOSI: We will have to wait until the chicken crosses the road to find out why it crossed the road.

CARLY FIORINA: Hilary Clinton lied about why the chicken crossed the road.

BRIAN WILLIAMS: I was there and crossed the road with the chicken.

BEN CARSON: This isn’t brain surgery. It wanted grain.

SARAH PALIN: The chicken crossed the road because, gosh-darn it, he’s a maverick!

BARACK OBAMA: Let me be perfectly clear. If the chickens like their eggs they can keep their eggs. No chicken will be required to cross the road to surrender her eggs. Period.

HILLARY CLINTON: What difference at this point does it make why the chicken crossed the road?

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don’t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or against us. There is no middle ground here.

BILL CLINTON: I did not have sex with that chicken!

BERNIE SANDERS: That little chicken will pay 80% income taxes no matter what side of the road it’s on.

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

AL SHARPTON: Why are there no black chickens in the road?
