Question, on Ducks. I want to get a small group. I understand that I can pen them with Chickens. So, if we build a small pond about 3' long and deep, will the chickens have enough sense to not try to go swimming and wind up drowned?

A.ducks = good idea
B.penning them with chickens = bad idea
C.digging a pond = bad idea
D.ch
ickens drowning in pond = not likely

A. Muscovy ducks fly, and roost on roofs, cars etc.
B. Ducks make a watery mess when penned with chickens.
C. Unless you can change the water very often, a pond will
soon become stagnant and stinky.
I dug one once. I filled it in after a few weeks.
just go to Menard's and get a mortar mixing tub.
it is made out of very durable plastic, you can easily
empty and refill it daily.
I have had mine for many years and the geese love it.
D. The chickens will drink out of the tub, but will not go swimming.

Which are mean? We have a RIR that is very protective of his birds. He has attacked me once and tried to attack DS, who has booted him in the butt several times....now he keeps a wide berth between us and him.

So our easter hatch went really well with my Brinsea incubator. We hatched out a bunch of babies although one had some issues so I culled him (legs didnt look long enough and were not working right) . few are heading over to the neighbors this afternoon...although I just saw a post and responded...like every year for someone whose kids saw the cute chicks at the hardware shop and had to have them for easter and a parent said no...so picking up two more this afternoon. sigh. We were keeping 11 but now looks like 13. We are planning to raise the boys for meat ..all are solid breeds except for one cochin(please be a girl) and the andalusians from hens and roos... they are such a slight bird...we have three of them. Not sure where we are going to put the boys yet... hubby says he is going to build me a tractor coop for them... we will see!

spring break s life is busy!

Question for everyone. How do you guys winterize your coops? Reading on here it seems like everyone does something different!

I was going to insulate the whole coop and get heat etc. I ended up getting a heated water dish and stapling cardboard to the inside to stop the breezes from cooling it off too much. That was it other than a light to extend daytime. They did fine with no frostbite.

Rainy day to everyone...not far from the truth Irish...although none of them would admit it!

Yep, it's the truth Roobee...you could visit ten coops and everyone would be different in one way or another. I have two coops...one that is insulated and one that isn't...both function well and have noticed that ventilation is much more an issue in my insulated coop. Just kinda go with what you like best, and see how it turns out. If it is dry, roomy, and plenty of windows for sunlight and ventilation..they will be happy.

Hoping to set eggs on April fools day...suzie says no and I say go....

.nice rainy day, the river is overflowing it's banks again.
might go over the road if this keeps up.

I had some time to kill, and Annie is making ho-made chicken soup, so I made a batch of dinner rolls in my 2 new frying pans.
