Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Another rainy day and more boring inside stuff done. Need 3 more eggs to set the bator in motion, so it looks like prolly tomorrow will be the day.

Maybe check out your feed mill by you roobee and see if sunnyside delivers there...they prolly do, and you can get some black and red layers that are nice and healthy....it would be easy peasy that way.

I want to start transplanting some trees here as soon as it dries up some now....and wood to be cut if I wanna stay warm next Winter too. Never new I would never run out of things to...and I love doing nothing...dang!

Thats what I'm thinking of doing. I'll wait and see what happens with the rest of the chicks. I called and they shipping two orders a month until about August.

RooBee, you say the new chicks are not doing that well.
Maybe it is something we can rectify, if you don't mind answering questions.

can you describe what seems to be wrong with the chicks ?

what temperature is their brooder ?

Is there a cool spot that they can go to in the brooder ? or is it the same temperature all over in there ?

good evening all,

I just came in from the shop. I have most of the rest of the pieces cut and planed, now.

what really slows down progress is the lack of clamps to do the edge gluing . I have to wait 24 hours before the glue is cured enough to run the assembled pieces through the planer.

I promise, as soon as there is some progress, I will be posting pictures/

hey you sweet roll bakers. can I use prepared caramel sauce for making caramel rolls ? instead of putting the raw ingredients into the baking pan and letting the caramel form that way ?

I found a really easy to make caramel sauce recipe.
it seems to me that I would have more control of how much caramel I want for the batch ..

The chicks that were not doing well would just get weak and lay on their side and stop eating. I've been checking on the remaining 8 and I think they actually look great. They are running around, eating and drinking. I'm wondering if it was just a few weaker ones? Maybe bad luck? I have no idea. I hope these continue to do well.

The temp right now in the brooder it about 95 right under the light and cooler in the other spots. I have 1 week olds and a few day olds mixed in the same brooder. They can get away from the heat easy and some do.

I wonder if you used already prepared caramel if it would over cook and crystallize during the baking?! I've never made homemade caramel sauce but supposedly you can put a can of condensed or evaporated milk in a slow cooker full of water and it turns or to caramel. It would be nice to know for sure

Hi All!

Jim, I would pour the caramel over the baked rolls or just before they brown. Yea, might over cook in the bottom of the pan.

Night All.

over cooking might be a problem, true,

but one of the recipes I came across said to put the ingredients in the baking pan, cook in the oven until it turned into sauce, and then add the dough swirls.

I am going to give it a try anyway, I will let you know the results..

we will all learn together.

thanks for the input

Today I will be working on the feeder again. after I go to F&F for Annie.
I could really use a haircut, but I can wear a pony tail until I get around to that .,

RBC, so sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with your first experience. Another factor you may want to consider is the chick feed. I can't remember if you were the one who said someone told you medicated feed was for introducing new chicks to established ones but that incorrect. Medicated feed contains small amounts of Amprollium (sp?), a low dose antibiotic that helps the chicks build a resistance to cocci. It is not a guarantee they will never get the disease, but it is a potential preventative. I always use medicated feed but that is my personal preference.

Another thing I do is grind my chick feed smaller in a coffee grinder. I have noticed over the past few years that the chick feed granules keep getting larger, which makes the chicks waste much more feed looking for pieces small enough for them to be able to swallow. They could be getting weak & dying from starvation.

I think Jim is correct that your mailed chicks were much more stressed from the cold & possible rough handling, or just being in a shipping box for too long, but then add too large of a crumble and that might be the reason they are still dying for you. In any case, I commend you for not giving up. Raising your own chickens from chicks is a very pleasant experience when everything goes right. You just happened to have some bad luck, but soon you will be a successful, experienced chick raiser. :)

If you are not fussy on breed & do not mind if the birds do not live that long, TSC has "assorted pullets" which are egg production birds. They will lay eggs like crazy but they burn out and die at a very young age (2-3 years old). They are usually healthy chicks. If you get any of their straight run birds, be prepared for about 80% roosters, give or take.

Good luck & welcome to the Cheesehead thread!
