6 weeks old tomorrow. I should weigh one but I almost want it to be a mystery until I whack em.

probably would dress out at about 3 pounds.

I took a walk back to the gardens. the schitz is here.
now when it warms up a bit, I can spread some of it and get my potatoes planted
going to try something different this year. I am going to make the potato hills first, then plant the seeds deep into the hills. cover them slightly..
then as the plant grows, I will just pull the dirt around them as they grow...

If the chicken's red butt is not bleeding, I wouldn't be too concerned .

        Good Sunday to all.... I prefer to send the boys down the road in the slow roaster. It just seems right to not give up all the good effort put into raising them....if they were small then I understand your thinking bbp. One never has enough housing and pens for all the different projects that could develop if one had the facilities needed.

Gonna be a busy in the gardens week coming up. I'm past my May 15 now for frost, so the babysittin plants is gonna come to a halt here this week if the rain stays away.

I hope Cind is ok to bl4

I have the same 5/15 frost date, BUT some plants in trays Friday night were wilted by 38f and they are calling for a low of 37 Tuesday so I am waiting for the weekend. Basil, peppers and squash were the ones wilted but recovered.

I just talked to Cindy on Fb. She is going through a rough patch right now and can't have her chickens anymore. She is understandably very upset about the whole mess. It is too painful a reminder for her to come back here right now. Hopefully in time she will come back to visit.

That sucks...

Mower still not working, so made the 4 kids help push mow the yard. Took about 4 hours, but got it done. While I waited, raked 40 gallons of quack roots out of the first 20x20 bed in the garden. This is going to be a long spring I think.

good morning,

Corey, I fed mine 5o/5o fine ground oats and corn starting right after the first bag of starter crumbles was gone.
(100 chicks).
I am of the opinion that the meat tastes better with the natural feed.
when we butchered, there was excess fat on them.
I like that, we discard most of the fat.
the gizzards were engulfed in fat..
the meat is really tasty and tender.

GG, 4 kid power mower. awesome.
when we were kids, we lived on a very hilly 2 1/2 city lot yard. No power mower back then. my two younger brothers pulled on the rope, and I pushed the reel mower.
and as per usual, we always put off mowing until the grass was way too long.
Dan didn't believe in those new fangled whirley mowers.
"they tore up the grass too much".
Funny thing is, after we all left home, guess what Dad bought .. yup. self propelled, too.. then it was the best invention in the world.

I have a big load of manure to spread.
I want to have my potatoes planted by this weekend.

Been busy in the yard the last few days. Most of the garden is in. The plants won't go in for a couple of weeks but I picked them up and put them in the greenhouse. I have 6 frizzle chicks and 3 silkies in the laundry room growing like weeds. My MIL has a huge round mound that she uses for a flower bed. The soil had gone stagnant from no amendments so last year we dug everything up and sprayed it for weeds. This past week I got ahold of a bunch of composted sawdust and added about 5 wheelbarrow loads of sand/sawdust/poop from my chicken run and tilled the s*&t out of it. Today I got it all smoothed and shaped and put a ring of hostas around the bottom and a large rock in the middle with grape hyacinth around that.

Anyone have any hibiscus, hardy mum, daffodil, or tulip they want to get rid of?

I have some Flor de Jamaica (some call it hibiscus or Rosa de Jamaica or just Jamaica) seeds from a friend in Mexico. Down there it's a perennial - up here grown as an annual. Are you going to the bash?

One of my BLRW hens is broody again so I let her sit on 11 eggs. She seems content in her own little pen with her eggs. All the littles are thriving in the brooder and the juniors love having access to the garden (for now). I still have to cull some of the older gals - one of them gets beat up by the rooster so much (he absolutely HATES her!) that she won't go in the coop at night unless I put her in after dark. I don't know where she hides at night but she has survived out there for weeks now.

The garden will go in now but slowly as my hubby's back is getting quite bad and he'll need surgery on it soon. So it's just me plodding along for now. Anxiously waiting for the asparagus and rhubarb to be ready for harvest!
