Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Chilly Morning here with the brisk winds. Good to hear that the chicken turned out tasty for you WG. I make grilled chicken about once a week during the summer and fall.....it's Delicious.

The green goop is a all purpose cream used for all kinds of stuff that are skin related.

Fox with a kit made a walk by the coop while the birds were still locked up...dang lucky for that.

Welcome pc

Yes, Mel the cheese spread was fabulous, awesome time! Brent- thank you for all that you, Suzie, and Jenny do!

Have you had chickens before?

Nice to have you back JJ!
Cindy- we are all starting to run low on our green goop and would love the recipe!!! Maybe you could share? I use it for everything.

This is my first time with chickens! So far I'm enjoying them immensely! I just put the 10 6-8 week old chicks in the coop with the 6 18 week'ers. It seems to be going well. My cockerel is busy trying to 'hump' everyone of the older pullets. He's finally gotten his crow down. It was fun to listen to him practice like a teenage boy with a cracking voice. They free range all day and seem very happy!

Lol I caught one of my 10 week old cockerals trying to mount a 14 week old legbar today. She of course isn't ready and thought she was being murdered and he had no clue what he was doing just had an urge. Lol he had better wait a few weeks to try anything again.

At what age do you all usually change extra cockerals over to meat producer from grower and then process them?

I don't use anything but medicated chick starter. after the first bag is used up, I switch to finely ground 50/50 oats and corn. they stay on that until I butcher .
I don't raise cockerels for meat. I buy Cornish/X Rock pullets.. we butcher at about 12 weeks, or whenever the mood hits..

We are actually having barbecue chicken on the grill again tonight! I threw some potatoes on there too. Yummy!

How cute to see the baby fox, but lucky they were locked up! Yikes! I hope they don't come back!

Barbecued chicken was my food of choice when I was pregnant....... Love the stuff!

Hubs spoiled me last night with grilled porterhouse..... he's a keeper. ;)

The kids bought me a couple of pounds of dark chocolate.... I think I am set for at least three months!

That brewery CC and CS were talking about; the butcher's dad sells that beer at the shop. I'll try to get some for next year.

I heard that Brent is putting out treats for that cute baby fox.

I got the McCullough trimmer running today. only I was concerned that the diaphragm was stretched, and it appears that I was right. So, I ordered a carb rebuild kit from O'Reily"s.. they said it would be in by 7AM tomorrow .

then I took the carb off of the Homelite trimmer and cleaned it all up. put it back together, and then the primer bulb split. So I will pick up a new primer bulb, fuel lines and a fuel filter tomorrow, too..

Need fresh mixed gas/oil, too.

.the blackberry patch is white with blossoms. I should take a picture before the rain knocks them all off..

That's funny bl4...trying to keep a porterhouse for very long doesn't work well....

The fox did come back this afternoon and tried to grab a hen...lucky me being outside and hearing the alarm call, I went running and yelling, again chasing her away hungry ...so far Brent 2 and fox 0 .... yep Jim, lead treats on the menu but no takers so far....it keeps well in it's sealed container though, so spoilage won't be a problem. I would hope she finds food elsewhere. Going away without a kill multiple times won't work feeding the young.

Ah, lead treats! Now that makes sense. I hope your score keeps going up, and the foxes stays at zero. YIKES!!!!!!

we call that a shot of vitamin 22. more beneficial to the giver than the receiver.
it is too bad it has to happen, but if they would just go after the field mice and leave chickens alone, it wouldn't be necessary.

I am going to finish my cuppa and then head into town.
have to pick up a few things to get some weed whackers going around here.

just before dark, I turned the young pullets loose. it is funny to watch them come out for the very first time, they huddle around the open door until one of them gets shoved out, then gradually they start coming out by the first one. but soon they are going in and out without thinking about it.

I had Zeke sit with me so he could get used to the "strangers". I think he is fine with them, now.
I don't worry about Frankie.

I was surprised at how big the barred rocks are. they are at least banty sized. by the end of July, I might be getting eggs.. by the end of August, for sure.

We did not get hit by the frost last night. I didn't think we would so I didn't bring in any plants.
the blackberries didn't lose their blossoms either.
