also, don't set the first eggs they lay.. give them a week or two until their eggs begin to be normal sized.
small pullet eggs are not good candidates for hatching..
however, you do realize that if you crack an egg open to see if it is fertile, you can no longer hatch that particular egg.

If you suspect the eggs are fertile, just go ahead and set some. and hope for the best..

Question for my experts... I have one hen that was broody... hatched some babies... this was the end of June.. Those babies are now 4 weeks old... She is still in clucky protective mode to those littles, but her comb is super pale and floppy...would you expect it to still be pale and floppy at this point or wait until those babies are more on their own before she bounces back? I judge health by that comb... so worried about her ( and ready for her to lay her olive eggs again)...

thanks

I have had clucks baby their chicks until the chicks were 3/4 the size of mom.. If she is acting healthy, I wouldn't worry too much.

I have some pips in the bator, right on schedule.
I was worried because the lady who brought the eggs had them stored in her refrigerator.. I gave them 2 days before I put them into the bator, then I waited another day before I started the turner..
Now time will tell..

I am leaving in a few minutes to pick up Annie's "new" used buick lasabre.. she has been looking for a good one for 3 years. this one came from Iowa/Illinois to Wisc. It is a 2002 but there is not a speck of rust on it; and I looked really hard for some..
It was purchased new by Grandpa, then the son took it over, and then the daughter drove it during her last year of college.
Now she doesn't want to drive the "grandma" car anymore..
Well, Grandma Annie will drive it,, and gladly ..
I rides even better than Annie's Lincoln Town Car did. until she totaled it a few months ago..

What breed do you have in the bator? Back on a normal work schedule tonite again finally. They can keep that split shift crap. Good find on the Buick. I'm about due for a new truck, just waiting on finding the right one and the right deal. Trucks seem so outrageous right now.

Hi all,

corey, the eggs are Sagitta chickens.

I also have about 10 turkey eggs, (I am guessing)
she didn't mention that they were turkey, or what kind..

there are 3 chicks running around on the floor of the bator now.

We feel the Buick is a good find, our bank won't give a loan for anything older than 5 years, so we went to CoVantage.
the interest is a little higher, but they made the loan and in just over an hour, the car was ours.. they handled everything, right down to giving us the license plates.. no taking a number and waiting at the DMV ..

I had to chuckle at Annie one day last week.
Her Honda has a hiccup and once in a while it doesn't want to turn over.. I think there is a dead spot in the starter.
She said if she has any more car trouble, she is going to a car dealer, and doesn't care which one, and getting a brand new car and driving it until they reposes it..

Debating taking a vacation day tonite. It's supposed to be so nice today and tomorrow and I could sure use the extra time and good weather to get some of the home projects done. I'm sure I'll end up going in tho. Not much on tap today besides a run to the Walmart shortly and then some sleep. I have a dozen doors to stain sometime too, clean the coop, and mow the darn lawn somewhere in there. I'm always so excited in the spring to mow the grass and by now I'm ready to spray bullseye on the whole thing

Yesterday I took a pail of blackberry seeds , mixed them with water and spread them in a long row in the weeds out front next to the road. maybe they will sprout, maybe not. they are the gleanings from the wine making.
as long as I was out there with the lawn mower, I did the stretch from the road to the house.. glad I did, too. it was sort of wet and thick. It doesn't look nice when you mow it that way. looks more like you should have a dump rake and go pick it up.

the new grass is looking pretty good.

there are about 10 chicks in the brooder.. about 70 more to go.

ETA:

I mowed the east portion of the lawn this morning, still pretty wet , but can't put it off any longer.

there are more than a dozen chicks , now.. too many moving too much for a good count ..
