Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

700

Front yard

They are around 10 weeks. Fully feathered but 1/3 to 1/2 the size of my other hens at this point.

If they are free range, you should have no problems. the lower caste members can just move away from the higher ranked ones

chickens are not out to kill each other, they have their pecking order . that usually is one peck to the underlings whenever they get too close. they learn very fast who to stay away from.

however, if they are too confined, where are they going to go to get away ?

I don't believe socializing them in a cage in a coop does any good.

I never gave it any thought about introducing new chickens to the flock. I let them work it out.

the most trouble would be introducing adult birds of equal stature. then the pecking order between them might take a day or more..

sometimes older roosters take forever. but they don't kill each other. (unless confined together)

Well, I found the order form for the chicks and I picked them up March 22 so not quite as old as I thought. My birds don't get to free range so that is why I try to pre-socialize them.

Got my front flower box planted with pansies. Added some snap dragon to the round flower bed out front. About to go out and get the lime on the garden and try to plant some more potatoes since my others didn't come up. Think I planted too deep. Then to move the tractor.

If you are using the separate pen option inside the main coop for introducing the little ones...don't just eliminate their dog pen.....figure a way for the little ones to enter the main coop, but escape when needed back to the pen....make the opening large enough for them, but to small for the older birds to make it inside their safe area. The older hens will become adjusted to the newbies on their home turf before long. Just increase the size of the opening as the little ones grow. Easy does it works best.

I need to cut the grass...that's about as bad of time spent one could have.....dang that's a useless job...I prefer rustic...hands down...just sayin.

jim I wish I knew the answer. Google is a great friend when you haven't the slightest idea. Between google and YouTube I can always find my answers if no one else knows

They countered, and so did we. Waiting again, this time I hope they make a serious counter; the last one was a joke.

Yes CC, the cabin property.

thanks corey,
I did some searching before I posted here.
a friend called me and explained it to me.
it is a powder. you put the slightly moistened seeds and a little powder into a jar. shake it a little to get some powder on each seed and then plant as per usual.

daethen, did you get a soil test ? too much lime is just as bad as not enough.. you can ad calcium more safely,.

got the cultivator on Ollie, then got interrupted before I could put the hilling discs on. Annie wanted to go out for supper.
welll, OK, break my arm, let's go...
the Rueben I had was great.. with ho-made potato chips.
they were real hard, just the way I like them..

I had time after we got home to put the discs on, but now I am too fat and full to do anything physical.

bl4 , hope you get the log cabin.
I often toyed with the idea of building just a small one. like about big enough for a chicken coop.
