Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Summer like weather has finally arrived....I'm gonna wait for cooler weather before I pursue the whitetails....no walk-in cooler here!

Yep Shasta, your current set up sounds just fine...14sq ft per bird will give them plenty of space to move about. Finding the birds you are looking for should not be a problem. Shipped eggs are always a little risky when you consider cost and sometimes terrible results...but some folks still do it. You could order a sample copy of the poultry Press for $3. www.poultrypress.com

I just came across a place sort of like craigs list where you can post ads and look for items for free.

bestfarmbuys.com

they have a poultry thread..

ETA: it is hot outside, I know you all are not outside working.
so, where are you ??

My house needs painting bad....I provide the paint and brushes, plus all the beer and food off the grill you care for. Since you have your arm swinging bl4, I can keep it loose for you and keep you fed!

Amish neighbors down the road had a explosion and burned their house beyond repair...not sure if anyone is hurt yet. Fire trucks from 3 area communities fought the blaze.

hope the Amish couple and kids are OK.

I still didn't get the Blazer started. It acts like it is out of gas. I tried dumping some in from a can, but these new fangled spouts don't allow the can to tip high enough to pour the gas out..
I have to find a funnel.

I can use Annie's car to get the 2x4's, they will fit in the trunk.

ETA : Annie got called into work, so I am without transportation.
I have the pickup, but I am not about to unload the wall.
I have to go feed some dogs yet, before dark.

Bigz, if I just had a little time on my hands I would come help you paint. My dad was a painting contractor and I have painted for over 30 years of my life.

Got another 14 pints of dill pickles ready for brine today. Plus another bag of beans in the freezer. Mushrooms are fruiting yet again.

Hello fellow Cheeseheads! My husband and I are new to this hobby and are loving it. We have 2 Blue Wyandottes (28 + weeks, started laying about six or seven weeks ago), 1 Salmon Faverolle (24 + weeks, started laying a few weeks ago), 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 3 Buff Brahmas, 2 Light Brahmas and 1 Silkie Roo (I had to have a Silkie), all 22 + weeks, for a grand total of 12. Today, we kind of figured out that our 3 Silver Dottes all laid an egg. They currently are in a 12 x 14 barn stall with ventilation and natural light etc. We haven't got our coop and run finished because of big life events. However, the chickens all seem fine and very healthy. At this point, I think we're going to keep them in the barn stall (which has perches and nesting boxes) because of electricity and water (heated) available until next spring (please don't judge!). I am introducing myself because I have a few questions for the future. I would love a few EEs, Amercaucanas, and Copper Marans because of their egg color. I already have a broody Blue Wyandotte and next spring I expect she will be broody again or one of my other Dottes will be. Is there an easy way to find out who in our state or MN would be willing to sell and possibly ship fertilized eggs from these breeds? Would it be better to buy chicks that are sexed? If I do get some of these other breeds, I will most likely have to give up a few of my current hens to a good home. Any advice is appreciated. I do think I will be asking more questions as winter is coming and I want my flock comfortable and healthy. We are in Northern WI - just outside of Shell Lake. Thanks!
Hello neighbor!!!:frow
Well sort of. A little south of Rhinelander here. I actually love the coop in the barn idea unless you need that space for other critters it's probably a great place for your birds in our harsh winters. If you decide to go with hatchery chicks because of the sexing, might I recommend Hoover's Hatchery over in Iowa? I've tried several hatcheries and for me, they're the best hands down. The reasons are because first, I am very happy with the quality of the chicks for hatchery stock but more important to me is they all arrived healthy and happy. I think at least in part because they were shipped from far closer than other hatcheries so they spent far less time in the hands of the USPS. Also, they don't charge for shipping. Some of the others are ridiculous on the shipping costs. Feel free to pm me if I can be of any help. Otherwise, BYC, and this thread, are loaded with great knowledgeable folks who are more than willing to help. Again, Welcome!!!
