Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well Buck Creek Paula you were correct again. Lost my third rooster today in a year. Pine shavings are killing them, did an autopsy and crop was full and so was gizzard. What does everyone use as bedding? I'm thinking of going back to the days when I was a kid and getting wheat straw just harder to work with. It was a blrw rooster this time. Not one that I got from you. Thank God. Have a great day. Thought I would post this maybe help someone. Mike

sometime i wish i was wrong, pine is a problem when they are young and do not know any better not to eat it, i keep my babies on paper towel for about ten days, and so far haven't had that problem,

Fordmommy- What good looking dogs you have! We probably would have waited longer but we stopped at the humane society and there he was. He is the poster child of the humane society, his head cocks to one side and everything. When we stopped, we were checking in to see if my Shelby was there but no luck and then we all feel in love with him. I love dogs. I was so lonely at home without one. Now he gets to go to work with me and is there with me when I get home. I'm actually thinking of seeing if he will pass a therpy dog test. I brought him to work with me and my home client today loved him. We'll see if I have the time to fit that in too.

BCC and Cedar post- I had heard that pine shavings could be ate, but didn't think that they would kill. I decided to use pine shavings this winter in the coop because they are absorbant. I haven't had any problems but now am rethinking using them. My youngest chickens are 5months. I know that the younger ones eat them but... Maybe I'll just switch to hay to be on the safe side. I hate to worry about that too, but for awhile I was losing a chicken a month in the beginning. It's been since Sept since I lost one and don't want to loss anymore. Has anyone else had problems with pine shavings?

Beckychicks this is the third one that I lost in last year all roosters two over a year and half old. It makes it difficult when you need certain breedings. Certain colored roosters are sometimes hard to come by. Mike

I'm sorry Mike. I understand that it must be hard and frustrating. Why only roosters I wonder? and also why so old? Are they new additions to you? Maybe the home that had them before didn't have pine shavings? After reading your post those were the questions I had and I'm sure you have already asked yourself. I was going to clean the coop out today and lay new shavings down but now I think I'm going to search around and see what everyone else is using. I'll let you know what I find.
Good luck! Becky

These were chicken I raised myself. I looked in the crop and the pineshavings looked like as if they were fresh from last coop cleaning. Luckily I got two blrw roosters from Buck Creek a month or two back and they are now with the hens and eggs are in the incubator. So I should start to get a good selection. The rooster that died was related to all the hens I have so I needed a new rooster anyways but still I hate losing a chicken to pineshavings. Mike

Cedar post, sorry about your roo. That was a blue laced red wyandotte, right? I love my female, Scarlette. She's about 12lbs. BIG girl. And dark. I see some of my new girls eating pine shavings some times. Makes me think. I mix it when the hay gets too damp. But mostly hay. I will be keeping an eye on them.

beckyschicks, when you see the one for you.....you just know! I can not live without a dog again. Just won't do it. And I love when they cock their heads to the side like that.

I fixed up her box like you said, with a little fence. Awesome idea! And I stopped by the SIL's and picked up like 10 Tidy Cat boxes. Need any more??? Let me know.

FYI: BCC was nice enough to give me 6 BCM eggs for my broody hen to sit on. Let's hope all goes as planned. I'm a "learning sponge" right now. Any advise will be welcomed. Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone.

Becky, that Tucker is adorable!!! He looks very much like our family dog Cooper, who passed last summer at 14yr. Is he some kind of shepherd mix? Our Coop was a Heinz 57 - shep, lab, and maybe collie. Great dog he was.

BCC, loved the "You might be a Wisconsinite if..."
