Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey everyone, thought I'd join the group. We're from Houlton on the west end of WI and have 19 BO hens. We also have two amazing roos named Caesar and Colonel. We're very much newbies to the chicken thing. Holy Cow do we have eggs! 12-18 a day!!

Nice to meet everyone!!

Will you be selling any of those BLRW babies? If so. I'd be interested in a couple. Just saying.

If you wanted a few wouldn't be a problem. I get around the state quite a bit. Where you from? I'm going to be hatching quite a few this spring. I have a question I'm in the WI. tested flock program. Do I have to be NPIP to ship eggs to other states? Mike

welcome to the group as you probably already know you can really learn alot around this place. Buff Orpingtons are alot of fun I had them some years back and like you say you'll have eggs all around and the roosters are a joy. Have fun. Mike

anniemary!

I am the chicken-less member here; but loving every minute and just dying to move so I can actually HAVE some chickens! (And of course some geese as well.) Located about 30 miles from Appleton in a little cheese town.

Fordmommy, keep us posted on your babies! I was going to suggest you use your broody instead of an incubator to get more chicks; your chicken knows what she is doing better than I do!

Good Evening...I can feel the chill in the air again. Glad Jan is winding down. Never too soon for me!

Glad to read everyone is doing great. I agree with you amyable, pretty sad when it all seems like the norm, eh.

In regards to the coop bedding I prefer straw to the pine shavings. I would use caution with hay...it tends to mold when the stems become wet, and doesn't have the insulation properties of straw....just a thought.

Glad you seperated your broody fordmommy....that is definitely one of the keys to success. It will keep the other hens from adding eggs to the nest, or hens fighting to get in and lay possibly breaking your broodys eggs. It's a little more work, but worth the effort.

We don't have a dog at the present time. We use to raise purebreds, and sold literally 100's of pups over the years. Folks still call us from time to time looking for another pup. We are taking a sabbatical, until the time feels right again.

Keep the fire roaring....it feels good!

The pine shavings problem only happens hit and miss, some chickens get a taste for them, it can happen with straw and hay too. It helps never to run out of food and water and not to start them out on shavings, they can't tell the difference between food and not food, then they keep doing it even when they get older.

Good morning fellow Wisconsinites! Whew, I am back from a great scrap booking weekend and it took quite a while to read thru all the posts! You all have been busy! It was suggested the first weekend in in for a gathering...I am going to another one in IL that weekend and horse camping with my letterboxing friends; so that is out for me.
June does sound like a good month though...how about the second or third Saturday in June? Is there a way to set up a poll on this site? I am not too familiar with that. Can someone do it or should I just keep track of votes by hand? (sometimes easier!) Is there someone in the Waupaca area that can check out the parks previously mentioned? Is that central for most? It is about 1.5 hours from here I believe.
I am so glad that a bunch of people want to get together! This will be a lot of fun. I can make a sign up for food and we can do a pot luck...always the best! ( I get to make the deviled eggs--LOL!)

First...anniemary, glad you took my advice and found us. Any questions you got about your broody can be answered.

Second...amyable, You gotta cool looking dog too! He DOES look a lot like Tucker. Awesome.

And third...Terri O, I just called Hartan State park here in Waupaca and the manager is going to call me back tomorrow. He's out for today. And if you wanted to have a poll: you'd have to have a paying member set it up. But it would have to be in like randon ramblings. I thought about that too.

Well-let's just throw out there the 2nd week of June. Who can come then???? Oh! And anniemary, just so you know, we are trying to set up a weekend that we all could get together and have a meet and greet. We'd bringa dish to pass kinda thing. But first we have to pick a weekend. Now we're up to the 2nd weekend in June. Any takers? I'm free of course.

Oh! And babylady4, you're still my back up plan if she doesn't want to sit on those eggs. "We're in this together, Girl!"
