Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I would just avoid contact between poultry and wild birds in general. Contact between populations breeds disease, plain and simple. No matter how mild the disease it would be harmful to your birds. It might not be bird flu but any disease is devastating. Now most humans, on the other hand do not have any diseases to fear from handling healthy wild birds. (Just use common sense and wash hands afterwards.)
Birds are pretty fragile (their respiratory system has a lot of moving parts) so the diseases they carry wouldn’t be very harmful to us.

Speaking if crows. Last spring it appeared they were diggin out my seedlings in the garden. Until someone said it might be rabbits. But the crows act like they own the backyard and it is a bit dangerous going out. They sit in the trees and yell when I go outside. :hmm
I'd love to have crows sitting in my tree Yelling at me when to go out. It would be shotgun time and a lot of fun
Wisconsin crow seasons:
Sept. 16 - Nov. 16, 2023 and Jan. 19 - Mar. 20, 2024

I ordered a dozen hatching eggs from Reinhardt farm last night and they said it will probably be at least a month before I can get the silkie eggs. This is good though as I haven't used an incubator for at least 13 years ago. There is a lot of good information on this site on how to incubate. 13 years ago it seemed so simple. Lol

I totally agree with you, but I free range and my chcikens do not live in a bubble. I do like those strips though to keep the sparrows out something I am going to look more into.

Obviously they don’t live in a bubble. I free range too. That’s why I took away the bird feeders. It’s kinda sad we don’t get wild birds on my property anymore, but it’s worth it. (It’s too small to safely feed them elsewhere.)
But I was just saying, sparrows may not carry Avian Flu but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a danger to poultry.

I agree any wild bird is a danger to anyones flock, no doubt. Come spring many wild birds around me. Not only that there is also the danger of picking something up and bringing it home, bird droppings on shoes, etc. It is what it is.
Recently was in Calif. brought back older rust free honda crv. Niece made some eggs sausage before I left. The eggs just tasted so off , a difference in taste. My neighbor told me there is a difference in taste, guess never noticed because have not bought eggs from store in long time.
Guess feel little spoiled now, nothing like fresh eggs.:D

Yeah. I really loved the barn swallows in the old barn, even though they probably weren’t safe around poultry. But I didn’t have the heart to remove them. Fortunately they eventually moved out. Also fortunately, my new house has very new buildings (the chicken coop was just finished in September) so no worries about wild birds getting in.

I hadn't heard about 'the' avian flu. How would they actually test the sparrows for avian flu? At least it would not be very harmful to humans.

got 4 silkie pullets yesterday from Minnesota (north of the Twin Cities). A lot of driving and continuing trying to find the right roads. Lol. Craziness!!! . Not show quality but pet quality. I was expecting more. It was supposedly that I could pick them. Well, when I got there she didn't give me the ones I picked. Anyway, there was a lot of manipulations and I was driving most of the day and very difficult. My defenses were down and she got over on me. Anyway, I do like them but it wasn't exactly what she had said nor the pictures of them and anyway I have them. There is another place in Merrill (another long road trip ~ east this time) that I can get silkies which would be good quality and much less money. I'm going to get these. Reinhardt mini ranch. This sounds much better . I'm going to get a dozen hatching eggs. I had silkies at least ten years ago and now I am wanting a few more. Anyway, she got over on me and I was very tired and stressed and actually I was taken advantage of. Obviously I'm not too happy about this but these little ones are pretty cute. Just not what was advertised. I had wanted one pullet especially and she said I couldn't have it as it had turned out to be a cockerel. I was so upset because it appears she may have done away with him. So sad.

It just seems she is just about the money and also not wanting to sell any males for her "competition"
Whoa, that's some weird seller! I'm over on the west side of Shawano County and raise fancy (bearded/vaulted) and backyard silkies. I'm collecting the fancies eggs now but if you want the pet-quality kind, just let me know and I'll set a dozen of those and give you a great deal...something like $50 for a baker's dozen. ☺️ These other ones are $10 ea./ 6 for $50.
