thanks for the pictures of Theo.
I hope you have some hard copies made
I had some great shots of all of my dogs on my camera. but when I got a new camera, the tech lost ALL of my pictures.
we sold about 50 puppies and a couple of adult dogs in a five year period. so aa lot of dogs are coming into their last time with us.
really sad that dogs live such a short time
I often wonder about the puppies we sold.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I am so sorry to hear about Theo. A dogs love is truly unconditional.

Question about frozen straw. I was out of state last week/weekend so didn't really see this massive cold snap go down. Came back and the straw in the hut is frozen...is this normal? Should I be removing it/replacing or is this when the "deep litter method" kicks in and keep adding more straw on top.

The heated dog bowls work GREAT. I am a touch surprised to be honest. Although, the ducks use it as a hot tub. :hmm

I would add straw on top of the frozen straw.
how tall is the ceiling in that area ?
8ft on tall end...6ft on short end. I have bales of straw in the area to take up space and insulation. 6x10ft floor area. This picture is from summer, I have since put plywood around it for the winter. The top is open up under the roof for vent.

OK , just be aware, every inch you add to the floor, the closer the ceiling will become.
you should be in good shape until spring.
avoid putting water for the ducks inside as much as possible.
HA! I thought about that with the little goose hut I have. Their ceiling is not as tall. I will be cleaning that out this weekend for sure. I try to take advantage of "warm" days and clean clean clean.

I do not keep any water in the huts. I am not sure what I will do when temps get to -20 deg. Taking it day by day at this point. Certainly not a fun time of year.

Have you ever...........put out warm water for the ducks to get clean/play in? Like for this weekend with temps getting to 30+ deg??

My white duck is no longer white- more of a yellow now. Everyone just looks kind of rough at this point. With the warm snap coming I thought it would be nice to put some warm water in a pool for them.

A good clean out of the huts, warm pool to play in...everyone will be happy, maybe?

While I don't have any ducks, I'm sure they
are like chickens in the sense that they appreciate
everything that comforts them and allows them
to enjoy what they love to do daily. The chickens
here always have plenty of dry fresh straw to enjoy
and just hang out.
This break from the colder temps will seem pleasant
compared to what we have been dealing with.

Stay safe ... bigz
