Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

If it wasn't a 4 1/2 hr drive one way I would give those ducks a wonderful home. Maybe someone down there needs a chantecler rooster and would meet halfway? Or maybe a pair of dorkings . . .
My great-grandma lived on her own until she was 90. Then she had a stroke and that was the end of that.

. If it comes to it we could help you out with the trio of bantam cochins, blue roo w/black hens, keep us posted

So sorry Carol, prayers are being sent her way.

We are planning to build a brooder box for 14 chicks what size do you think it needs to be?

When we had the 9 broilers we had a large cardboard box (about 48"x 40") that we lined with plastic. It worked for a throw away but now want to build one that maybe could be taken apart and kept for later use. Don't want to spend much but want it to do the job. The broilers stayed in it for 7 weeks. Do EEs and BOs also take that long to feather out or longer? We got the Jungle Chickens when they were older so we didn't have them in a brooder box. I'm sure it's on the forum some place but your the friends I trust

Thanks for your help. Susie

There are apparently going to be 2 swaps near me, want me to keep an eye out for a good specimen?

I have a few (Swaps) coming here as well. But, if you see a Buff Black Tail Pair that are really nice, I would be interested. Will keep you posted on what I find here, and you do the same there for me!

We make use of wire dog crates to house chicks in as we have extras since we foster. We put a ring of cardboard around the bottom side of the crate to keep everyone in the crate(changed between groups) That seems like a good size(48" x 40"), usually by 8 weeks or so they should be feathered out-at least that seems to be the case for our chicks. If you build one just make sure it can be cleaned easily and the material used doesn't hold/absorb wetness as that could cause problems. I know people who use bigger rubbermaid type tubs as brooder to-clean up and stack between uses. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Carol, I'm so terribly sorry, I'll keep her in my prayers. Hope you find folks to take your chickens, but praying it doesn't come to that.

Carol that is terrible news! Are you sure that you will need to move all that you have accumulated? When are you moving into your new rental place? Wont you be able to move them there soon enough if need be? I am so sorry for your barn owner...isnt she rather young? She (and you) have my prayers too! Terri O

Carol, I am so sorry, both of you will be in my prayers

I have a question for all of you. Once the chicks I get are 2-3 weeks, will it be safe to put them in a coop. It will probably be mid may when I want to move them in. Should I heat it until they are fully feathered out? I was thinking of a milk house heater that was built into a frame and hung up high? I am not sure a heat lamp will keep them warm enough

thanks

David

Carol, so sorry to hear about your friend. Life can sure change in an instant! Good thoughts to her and to you.

Update on the peritonitis dog with the duodenal rupture - he went home today, so far doing very well, fingers crossed no problems down the road.

Back dog today didn't end up going to surgery, MRI showed a cuttable disc rupture but for a variety of reasons, owners decided not to pursue surgery. Unfortunately, the other back dog had a poor chance for recovery due to having no pain sensation for too long, owners elected to not pursue surgery. Whole day spent at work getting these things hammered out, didn't actually do any surgery but still was there until 7.

Hoping all the critters stay healthy tomorrow so I can get a day home.

TerriO, has meant to arrange to grab some duck eggs from you to set today, but THAT didn't make the roster today. Got any blue duck eggs for me?
