Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning again, I was out on the deck at 6AM waiting for the fox to show up.. I gave him until 8 AM.. He did not show up..Too bad for him, he will have to wait another day to get shot..

That one gosling in the brooder is such a baby !! He won't stop crying unless I pick him up.. I held him for about an hour while I was drinking my java and waiting for the fox.. He slept the whole time.. I wish it was warmer out so I could get the big ganders to adopt him. For the last couple of years, the ganders have taken all the goslings and ducklings and adopted them..

Only one bunch of ducklings were too independent and wouldn't go with the ganders..

Dooner, the outlaw.. I like that.. Sounds like you should be wearing six shooters and spurs..

I want to finish the nests today and then it is major coop and pen cleaning time.. I need both rooder spaces in the coops for chicks.. I have about 60 more due this week.. plus odds and ends of other eggs..

Annie wants a couple of sets of these new nests for the two lean-to coops..

and I have a large bowl full of turkey and guinea eggs to set plus 6 1/2 dozen of americauna eggs.

And speaking of swaps, is anyone going to the Seymour Swap at the Outagamie Fairgrounds?? I'll be there, my first one.

I wish! There are never any poultry things around where I live... : ( I've got my calandar circled for the one upcoming in September her in Portage co.!

GOOD MORNING eVERYONE,

No sun but it isn't raining, Just got the filters and waterfall set up for my pond. Gonna drink some more coffee and start siding. I hope I will get it done this weekend and then I can make the extended run. I was thinking green wire garden fencing and then a chicken wire top just to give them some hawk protection. I know it won't hold out mega predators but I am hoping that during the day the chickens will have more room and the predators will mostly stay away.

the girls are hitting their ugly stage now. Their cute fuzz is disappearing and their feathers are coming in. The comets are getting darker feathers on their backs while the wyandottes are getting their black and white coloring. They are getting so big, I hope the weather heats up so I can put them in the coop in 2 weeks.

well better get going

David

Morning everyone!!

Hubby let me sleep in, which was nice. Then I made a big cuppa of coffee and he asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. I hurriedly spit out "A PRESSURE CANNER!" He looked at it, looked at the price, then told me we could buy 300 cans of corn for that price. Which, I almost slapped him upside the head. ALMOST. He said, go ahead, and I got an All American Pressure Canner (holds 7 quarts) coming sometime next week!!!

Now I won't feel bad for planting all those bean plants!

I also on a whim posted the duck eggs on craigslist for eating, and have had an OVERWHELMING response. I have a waiting list of 13 doz eggs. I only know for sure that I have one hen laying, so those scovies better get to work! Pay for their food dang it! I didn't think people would want duck eggs! Sheesh, have I been wrong. I am not sure what to do with the ducks. Since adding those scovies from BBC, their pen gets mucked up FAST. And, that stupid scovie from TO paired with my drake blue fawn!!! At least it seems that way, I haven't seen them mate yet. Two of the scovies from BBC paired, and the other scovie is still too small. If we had a bigger area for them, I'd feel more likely to keep them all, but I am thinking I need to thin the flock.

Something in the garden keeps biting me. It bites me on the neck, and draws blood. A decent amount of blood. Not like a skeeter, and I never feel it bite me. Ed thinks it may be a horse fly, but I don't feel it land on me or anything. All I notice is dried blood running down my neck! It's got me twice now, and I'm getting scared to go in the garden!!!

Gotta run!

Where in SE WI are you located that way we can figure out who is close by you. If you have room you could always see about getting some younger chicks- day old or so that have been kept away from the main flock and raise them up.

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome. I live in southern washington county. I met a lady who would sell me two buff orpingtons that sound like they are about the same size. She has a flock of 25 and they are walled off in a barn. She has black australops as well.

Raiquee, I get bit by those things too. I think they are some kind of mite or no-see-ums..

You will like that pressure cooker.. there are a lot more things that it will do besides can beans and corn..

It is a bit scarey at first with the pressure and all, but you will get used to it.. just make sure you let ALL of the presssure out before you open it..

start saving glass mayonaisse jars.. LOL

How much are you planning to sell your duck eggs for ? I get $2.50 for my chicken eggs.. you should get at least that much for the ducks".. sock it to 'em ..

Dooner, I would quarentine those chickens from that barn.. watch for runny nose, watery eyes and coughing and/or sneezing. If they already have those symptoms, don't walk, run away.

I gotta get back to setting and moving eggs.. setting 3 duck, 6 turkey, 25 guinea and 78 americauna.. still have to collect today's eggs..

Hi, Dooner, welcome! You and I must be neighbors! Iḿ in the same area, though my location lies and says Milwaukee, Iḿ spending a year here in the Holy Hill area. I don´t have my girls full time because I´m living at a house my dad owns (I know, I know, 27 and living at home). But I´m really active with Cream City Hens, a group working toward ordinance change in Milwaukee. We plan on having chicken keeping classes later this summer if youŕe interested. By then youĺl be past that point, likely, but it will be run by the UW Extension people so they´d be able to answer any questions you may have.

Anyway, good to see someone who lives so close! MeettheFlockers is also in this area...anyone else out there?

Oh, and Raiquee...CONGRATS on the pressure canner! I can only dream!

Keep up the good work selling those eggs. Don't be afraid to charge enough to pay for that duck food that they're famous for wasting all over the place! I feed only organic, so I charge a bit more, but I get $6/doz for mine in Madison. The farmer's market there has people selling for $9 and $10/dozen.

Let us know how it goes Raiquee!

Good Afternoon All... Jim you prolly have a female fox that is about ready to wean the pups. They get pretty brave when the pups start getting hungry for solid food. I've had them try to grab large adults right in the middle of the day. My brahmas were to big for her to get them in her mouth. Just alot of lost feathers.

Glad everyone is doing good and having fun.

The injury to the eye is just bad luck...has to do with genetics...dad had a torn retina also. If this heals correctly then I have another surgery in 3 months to complete the project. I can tell you about it at the bash, if anyone wants to know.

Should be a good selection of birds at the bash. Most folks are able to help others out with their needs. Just mention what you want and someone might just have what you need.

I have some extra egg cartons, if anyone needs some?

Thanks for the kind words Doc. My gardens are on hold for now. Way to cold for me yet. You should see the onion sets Suzie is gonna plant.... the venzun will have plenty of company in the pan if they all produce. Might have some green ones for the bash if the timing works out. Prolly radishes too! Washes down nice with a tall cold one!

Later... ~ bigzio
