Oh my look at that cutie sleeping!
Don't think I will be able to make it this weekend to the meetup. I have a wedding tomorrow and then family cookouts on Sun and Mon. Next time!
Well, my chicks did wonderful last night, they are in the living room in the brooder and they barely made any peeps that I could hear, and surely none that woke me up. The fuzz butts are now being watched by big boss kitty this morning. She's been eyeing them up since I put them in the brooder yesterday afternoon... no chikkies for the kitty! The cat's gotta get bored watching them peep and run around all day... but when I cleaned the brooder and fed them this morning, I left the lid off and watched very closely at Midnight (kitty) and she didn't even bat an eye as to the fact that the lid was off and she could possibly reach down in and swipe one. I hope she knows better... I am guessing she does.
Ohe chick has gotten a name. Her name is Gretta. She is the only one I can tell apart from the others, so at this point she is the only one who will get a name
Gretta it is! There's one of the Golden Buffs that loves attention. Each time I dip my hand in the brooder, she comes a running. I am thinking it is the same one each time, but I can't tell any of the buffs apart. Gretta is a RIR.
Got a call from the vet this morning, we have been having calves die left and right for no apparent reason, healthy one day, dead the next. The vet did a post mortem exam on some last week, sent the tissue samples to Madison... great - we have salmonella in one of our calf pens in the barn. I am sure the heck hoping and praying that the kids didn't drag that into the house and give to the chicks last night. We are now on a mission to clean that pen and disinfect it. Vet says that using bleach on cow manure will not kill the salmonella because once bleach hits the manure, it cancels out the cleaning agent. So, off to the vet this morning to pick up the cleaner and I am sure I will be spending most of the day in the barn cleaning a calf pen!
