Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all, waiting for bro to come get me.. I won't be able to drive after the lazer..

I counted the chickens as they came out of the coops this a.m. not a real accurate count, but I easily have 66 hens/pullets.. 3 roosters.. so we are getting 50% laying as of yesterday..

the turkey that was "lost" in the black berry patch last night survived the preds.. she was still bewildered this morning.. she is in a spot where the two fences make a corner.. doesn't have enough sense to walk back to either end of either fence.. I am not about to brave those black berry plants to direct her.. she will have to figure this one out on her own..

time to leave..

Good Morning my fellow Chicken Freaks!  :frow

Well, the Holidays are over and from reading the past threads it seems like the majority of us had a fantastic season.  I'm sorry for the ones with trouble on their plates (Sickness/IRS...etc.) - Things can only get better!

I had some problems with the IRS and it's not a lot of fun when you are guilty until proven innocent.  I ended up having to re-file 4 separate years - to me the info was identical as the first but for some reason the second time, everything was okay.  They even went so far as to put a lien on my house!  Everything is good now though but those bastages at the IRS tortured me with threats via letters for over a year an a half.

Had a great time with my Daughter at Christmas - while her visit of 6 days seemed really short - It's nice to have my "quiet" house back.  Although I do miss her.  I think those with grown children who live out of state know exactly what I'm talking about... LOL

The additional 5 hours of light (2 in the morn and 3 in eve) have resulted in a steady 5-7 eggs a day from my eight girls.  I've also been spreading about a 1/2 ice cream bucket of BOSS throughout the plowed trails in the woods every day.  The hens really seem to enjoy it.   They pretty much stay on the plowed areas - although I've notice a few places where they have strayed off the path and braved the deep snow to get at a fallen log...etc.  They come and go as a group, staying out for only 1/2 - 3/4 of an hour at a time before they go back in the coop to warm up...  They go back and forth all day until around 3:30 pm when they are in for the night.

All this talk about broody clucks...etc. sure makes me miss Bert, my Rooster...  It's just not the same watching the flock.  I miss Bert running back and forth trying to keep track of everybody... LOL   Anybody have a Rooster - young but old enough to introduce to the flock?  Bert was Americauna but I'm not too picky as long as he is realitivly calm, friendly and of course... Studly.  ;)

Stay Healthy and Warm!

Tom I will let ya have Gray Beard after this springs first hatch pen has eggs for hatching...... I have 11 hens I want to cover with him first, he is an Easter egger, but carries the blue egg gene, 1 of my hens had a nice little pullet last spring, that lays me a pretty green/blue egg from him. she is a SLW cross, so I know he carries the gene. He's not a super friendly lap rooster but he will eat out of your hand, come to his name and is not aggressive at all towards people. You can pick him up but he isn't crazy about it, I do trim spurs and nails and check him over about once a month, he is ok for it. He does not however like any other roosters................. he is separated from my mane man Hansom because he kicks his arse daily if he is out with him. and last time he did a whopper oif a job, tore hansom up pretty good. he's a good rooster and takes care of his girls though. But he is just not a roo that can have a friendly relationship with another roo, so he has to go. Cindy might want him though, because she did mention a trade a few months back. So will have to see with what we can figure out. This is him........... he throws alot of gray to his babies.

he is also a laying box rooster and gets in digs around and calls the girls to come lay.......... he taught all my pullets where to lay that egg......... hehehe I will miss him, but I really want a BCM or wellie roo, to make BSL chicks.......

January thaw to all...

Terri for posting the hm baileys recipe. It will get a workout here for sure.

Hope you had good laser session today Jim. Yep, I was told 6 months ago with the last blasts that I should be good for awhile....didn't know that it ment 6 months though....reason for the dang on my part.

Hens enjoyed the sunshine today, like me.

Big Falls mill by me has the boss now for $12.49 per 30lbs....I'm gonna go tomorrow and stock up for the season. My girls have been missing the precious treats for awhile now. Not to bad, eh Cind.

Doctored up frozen pizza tonight...dang nice pile of stuff added made it deeeelicios!

Well good evening everyone..........
Sorry it took me so long to catch up.... you all have been chatty 170 posts??? hehehe
Adam was home for the weekend, so never did get on here to read or post........ his truck needed a tune up and fix the heater, he almost froze to death last week in Mi. had to wake up every couple hours to start the monster to warm up........... LOL He is out now again on his way to MI. in the morning, today he was the trailer delivery guy I guess, he ran around all day dumping off short haul loads and swapping trailers.......... he isn't too happy with that kinda stuff, but what do ya do......... he preferrs longer runs with some miles in them. I don't blame him I guess but I like the short close to home runs he gets home an extra night or 2 a week then.......... ssoooo I do not mind at all.
Finally got a hold of the tax lady today seems she did make a mistake and his UI was not reported, so we owe uncle Sam 1200.00 bucks, funny thing is his Ui and my reportable SSD was the exact same dollar amount..........4,256.00 so now we have to make Uncle Sam wait till this years taxes are filed to get his money, because I DO NOT HAVE 1200 bucks..........to give back.

Got some sad sad news Friday my Uncle Jim had a heart attach and was at Theda Clark regional in Neenah, we went to see him Saturday afternoon, but didn;t get to talk to him much the hospice nurse doped him up with a double shot of morphine, a few minutes after we got there, he never woke back up, and passed away Sunday Morning............... So Thursday I have to go say Goodbye to my last and favorite uncle, he was quite the character, he was, and I will surely miss his pop in visits...........and silly sense of humor, and his point blank that's how it is attitude. Funny thing is our Jim here in the pink skirt driving his ollie reminds me so much of my uncle, the attitude and sense of humor for sure...............

So anyway I'm sure I forgot a million things I wanted to comment on, besides the cute chicks, but I just can't remember anything these days.......... CRS has taken over my life lately.
Opps oh ya TY for the Mouse trap advice..whoever it was that sent it.... does it work for rats too?? I'm building one tomorrow maybe 2......... how can I keep the chickens from jumping into the bucket? LOl I have curious chickens........... anyway Later all............ Kim

good evening, just got mom to bed right after feeding her.. tonight we had fresh from the Eau Pleine flowage, a 34 inch long Northern Pike.. My brother cleaned it for me for half the meat.. It was frozen solid and I just hate messing with frozen Northerns..

I fried up a pan of onions with a few pieces of the fish .. ate all I could hold.. then I made up a batch of onion and fish chopped fine and made a sandwich for gramma.. she attacked it like a mad hungry dog.. she is such a finicky eater otherwise.. it was fun watching her.. she ate the whole thing.. then had dessert and a glass of milk and topped it all off with a piece of chocolate.

i gave the fish carcass to the chickens.. I believe that every one of them was gathered around that fish.. when I went out to lock them up for the night, all the meat was picked off the bones.. all that is left is the head, spine and tail.. I hope the eggs don't take on a fishy taste..

my appt went good,, all Dr did was check the eye he did last Dec.. I still have to go back on the 24th of Jan to get the left eye lazered.. I am glad it went like this,, now I can work on Ollie..

I will have to get a pint of whiskey and try that recipe..

Hey all--nice to hear what you are up to Kim! Glad Adam is fitting into his new job too.
Dinner was delish--a roasted chicken and squash, boiled reds with parsley and peas. I cant wait until I have some of my own chickens to roast.
Carol and I are getting together tomorrow. She is bringing me some ducks I think. Idont know what she wants to take home with her. We are hoping to go for a horse ride with Peggy too. I hope the weather cooperates.
I need to go out and close up...guess I will hit the sack then--I am pretty tired from moving furniture in the house today. Looks good though!

I dream of the days when I can get away with roasting ONE chicken.... I roast two at once here and we never have any leftover! You dinner sounds delish as usual Terri!

Ghost, one of the jobs they gave my DH to do while he worked for HOW was go out and start the tractors up when it was cold. He would spend hours in sub-zero temps starting semis.... and come home from work a popsicle. He would layer up really well too and still freeze his you-know-whats off!

I need to find some motivation....... I was pretty useless all day today. I did venture out for about an hour to run some errands, but essentially I sat at home playing on the computer. Tomorrow I will motivate and hear into the valley and get the Bio-prep room ready for the Spring semester.

Congrats on finding some eggs, Judge!

Hope your kitty feels better, Terri.

Not much to report here. The sinus junk gave me the ambition of a gnat today. Sweet dreams, all.

Hi All,

Dr.H....I tried something a little different with this batch too. I put some sour cream in. Turned out pretty d@m good once I added a little more pepper.

TO... I think they are used to it. After midnight is when I usually start that stuff. I leave a note weather they can eat it or have to wait 'till supper. Everyone is out of my way then and it's a nice surprise when they get up. My thought with the eggs in that recipe and the "use only fresh grade A eggs" LOL.... where would any of US get those? Ain't it nice to have eggs you can trust?

Judge... congrats on the eggs!

Jim... did your turkey figure out the fence and come home? Glad to hear gramma ate so well.

GR... The trade I was looking for was My young Ameraucana Roo for a hen. I have 3 Amer. Roos and I only really need 1. LOL I would post a pic. but I'm having camera Issues.

Grey Beard is a nice lookin' boy!

BigZ... That's not bad for BOSS at all, comes out to only a penny and a half a pound more than me.

GR... sorry to hear about your uncle

Bl4.... Some Day you will get by with 1 chicken! When the kids were all home we had to do 2 too. When we lived with my folks we did 3. When we had people living with us it would be 3 or 4.

Ozzy, my Australop/gold comet cross rooster is sitting in solitaire! He beat up Damion the Dominque roo! He's OK but was pretty bloody when I broke them up. Ozzy is only around because I think he'll make some good layers.
roll.png
With my luck he'll throw all roos! We'll see this spring.
With a little luck I'll get the 2nd pen of turkeys set up a bit better today (Tue) I think they could use more room and I need to make it more wind proof.

Guess that's it.... Night All!
