Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

the good news is the sun is out,,,

the bad news is,,,,,,,well alot of you already covered that and you are not UPNORTH!

the good news is I do have a greenhouse,,,,thinking it might just get warm enough in there to do something constructive,,

the bad news, I have had a lethargic langshan hen for at least 6 weeks, I thought she was just recovering slowly from moult (or was a Republican pouting),,,yesterday she was hunkered against the footing in the coop, I put her under the heat lamp that I had placed over the roosters cage, today she was dead, anyone need a frozen chicken to beat a dog with? pretty sure she wouldn't unthaw if I shipped her today

off to check some houses and find some breakfast

Awesome! Keep me posted on the d...I will definitely come and I think I'll see if my young chicken crazy friend can join us too.

I think I'll call ideal and ask. My friend ordered some and send she'll sell me some but I'm currently laid off riht now and have time for baby chicks...and the price is great...I just know me...you expect a couple of casualtities...but even that is upsetting. (I'm rather softhearted)

I still want some lav. Orp hens...so I definitely want to meet this other lady.

For a frozen morning it sure was nice to come on here and laugh my hinny off. Tears almost ran down my leg I laughted so hard.

The hen settting the nest is doing just great. I pulled her off and checked her out good. She is getting a little thin and I gave her all kinds of liver. chicken and spinach to help encourage her to eat more.

Sorry to hear about your hen passing, but, sounds like she was on a decline before the cold hit.

Eggs are still coming regular and I have beeen pretty happy thaat the English Orps are laying almost daily. They really like this cold and are out foraging more than the egg layers. The ducks are still pretty close to the coop and only forage for a few minutes and go back in.

The sun sure is nice. Glad the weather is calling for a heat wave soon. 30 is going to feal like sweather weather.

Good morning! I was just going to start my post and I hear that the fuel oil truck is here...I sure hope there is enough $$$ to pay for this! Man is oil pricey. I guess I dont have to talk to him until he is done. Then give him a check. I dont think I would like to have that job; or any that I had to work outside all the time. In and out of a warm truck--no thanks!

Almost up to 5 out there...when it gets over 5 or 10:15AM (whichever comes first) I will head out to water and feed. DH said he tossed some hay to the horses when he left and the birds have food so I am not in too much of a hurry. I think the time will beat the temperature today though! I am glad the sun is bright today and there is no wind. That wind was nasty yesterday on the back side of the buildings.
Plumbing is frozen today of course. Will have to see if it breaks the pipes again when it opens up. The joy of living in an old house for sure!

I have not much to report either...only that I HAVE to do something in this house today besides loading the stove and reading my computer screen!

OMG--$700 for oil! And the price is DOWN .40 from last fill. WHew. now the account is sure lighter. THe fuel guy is really nice, he comes right in and ignores the dogs. They dont even bark very much! In fact they barked less that when DS and DD got home form work last night!

Yeah, I feel safe....from my kids!

10:11...time to sign off and head out to the big chill. I am going to try and bring everything I need today instead of taking multiple trips into the house. I wonder if I will have any eggs that arent cracked today. I think my grand total yesterday was about 10. Most had already cracked...

Later all--I am going to try the Flylady thing of "Just vacuum for 15 minutes--you can do ANYTHING for 15 minutes!" You are supposed to STOP after 15. I might just do it!

I've been following FlyLady for a few years now. She makes it seem so easy

Hello- nothing new this morning. I was kind of suprised that the kiddos had school today. They didn't have school yesterday, so I was kind of glad, but they have a 45min bus ride, and it makes me nervous in this weather. I don't know a thing about cars and such, but couldn't an engine stall out in the cold? Then what would they do with 30 some kids in this weather. Well anyway- all is well and I am glad to be sitting here with just DS3 doing nothing.
All was well with the chickens and horsey and goats yesterday. A few of the chickens came out briefly to drink, but otherwise stayed under the coop in the run. Not that it was warm, but it is covered in plastic so at least the wind is less. I am getting 8 eggs now from 15 chickens. Every one of them were frozen and cracked yesterday. I made up a custard and a cream pie. DH liked them I think. Half of each were gone when I got up this morning.
Hope you all have a great day! Off to check on the animals

Good cold morning to you all!!

I used to follow Fly Lady too. Sure helped me set up my own routines.

Lost one of the Jaerhon boys last night. He was looking a bit off yesterday and this morning he was dead. Everyone else in the brooder looks good,

hoping for no more casualties.
My heated water base couldn't keep up yesterday but I was using the plastic waterer on it. Switched it out for the metal one, we'll see if that solves the problem. The chickens don't seem to be too bothered by the cold so far, I got 12 eggs the last two days in a row. Looks like both the Wheaten Marans and Wheaten Ameraucanas are laying now and the Swedish Flower Hens are starting up too!

No school here today due to the cold and they were off yesterday for a teacher in-service. A long 4 day weekend for them, but being stuck in the house is driving this mom a bit nuts!

Yeah, there's no copying & pasting with BYC, Cind. You would have to right click on the pics & pick "Save picture as" to save them onto your computer, then you can post them. You can always delete them out of your computer's picture folder after that. They'll be saved in your BYC album unless you delete them. Pretty funny response to your ad.

and to the Cheesehead thread, brickedchick and denise! Glad you joined us. Hope you like it here.

It's about time you came to visit, Marg! Too bad you need a dead chicken up side the head to remind you, though.

DrH, so sorry to hear of the rumor about your friend's son. What a horrible thing to start! I hope the family doesn't hear about that.

Terri, it's balmy by you! At 10:30 it was only -4 here! But at least it was 10 out in the carport, probably 15 or so in the coop.

Sorry to hear about your hen, Dan.

Try to stay warm, everyone! We're in for a heatwave pretty soon. Whoo-hoo!
