no bulb. no fire hazard. here is a pic.

the heat comes from above. it has 3 heights. no light so chicks rest more and grow.

More expensive than bulbs, but I am hoping to get it back in light bill savings. also we do hatches for schools and we are much safer than the hot bulb around all those curious children. The downside is size, it will only work for about 10-12 chicks tops as you can see by the pic..

good morning,

will be spending a good deal of time outside today.. so long johns are part of the uniform of the day..

that brooder heater should take care of more than 10 chicks.. they do not have to be directly under it to be warm.. chicks with clucks run around in 50 degree temps,, and then they dive under mom to get warmed back up..
and that heater should also warm the air up around it, so the chicks not under it would stay warm, too.. chicks rotate, so they won't all be under it at the same time..

judge, I fell asleep at the wheel last night..

better go make a cuppa and then out to unload the straw from the trailer.. IKD where I am going to stack it, yet...

I went to the link,, it said 20 chicks.. but you can always sneak in a few more..

Quote: I have this..it does not work for outside..getting 20 chicks in it would be a miracle. It only heats directly under and the chicks actually have to be in contact with it to get much heat. I use it in the house and for the 12 chicks I have now I had to switch out to a light when they were two weeks old..It is pretty dang small.

This is what I'm using in my brooder right now. It's set up for the NYE chicks in the basement brooder. They really didn't spend much time under it once they were over a week old. More of in to warm up a bit then back out to peck around. Now they sleep on top of it most of the time. They do sell a larger version too for 50 chicks I think. So far I really like it, but I've been warned that it won't be enough warmth if I were to use it in the unheated shop this time of year. Love the safety factor and lower electrical usage though!

Finally getting back into the swing of life after traveling for work. Only to leave again in another weekk...:-( I hope the weather is better this time while I am gone. Me thinks we are going to have to do some coop renivations this spring:) Being our first winter, we have done fine, but can be better. PLUS I need to make a "small" ( insert grumble from husband here) addition for my 16 chicks coming in April ~~~ Happy Birthday To ME! ~~~~ (Louder Grumble From Hubby) :)

Congrats on all the eggs and on all the Chicks. Maybe next year, I will try my hand at hatching.. hhhmmmm.... I hear more grumbling:)

Welcome to all the newbies. I am pretty new myself and get a big kick out of reading the thread and learn a bunch too!!

Keep warm everyone!!!!!

Horrible news for me. My poor little chicks didn't make it. They obviously got forgotten in MPLS..they never showed up in mankato until 230am...when My postmaster called me he said it was a horrific sight...one solid frozen mass of baby chicks. I feel so awful. Two weeks ago it was 20 below and all but 4 were safe and sound. You expect a few...but all and so horribly...heartbreaking. So that's how my morning started...then kid missed the bus...so had to drive in..brrrrr..now home and need to figure out a bigger brooder as my other chicks are outgrowing theirs. I typically use an old playpen...the kind most of us probably grew up in that they deemed dangerous...they are great brooders...but I don't have a top and with cats...not good. So...Need to come upwith a new plan.
I posted some new pics on facebook...maybe angiebubs can bring them over for me as I can't seem to post pics from my phone. Be safe and warm all of you!

Really sorry to hear that. You were soooo looking forward to them, too.
