Yep, becky...slenderette is the green bean of choice here. I like the white seeds inside over the dark ones that most folks like. My order from Sandhill actually arrived today. This is what I ordered for those that care.

Usually I always agree with you, Jim, but ya know...........nurseries will not ship when they know their stock will not survive the temps (and cannot be planted, I know). So why would a hatchery ship when there is even a chance that the weather would be a factor? If they were shipping to a southern state & there was a freak cold front is one thing, but shipping LIVE ANIMALS to a northern state in January? I think it not a wise move, especially when they could very easily have a disclaimer that they will not ship until the temps are favorable for the animals, AND in the quickest way possible. The USPS is anything but.

The difference between chicks and nursery stock is that chicks have to be sent as day olds throught the P.O. Nursery stock does not have that type of urgency. I agree that they should just not send to certain regions during cold times of the year. But customers should know better than to order too. At work we ordered ducks twice last year and they came dead because we happened to have very cold nights when they were shipping. This was in March or April. It was a bad deal. I was kind of mad that they didn't have a different shipping policy when the weather is predicted to be cold, but I guess it shouldn't be there job to track the weather all over the US.

I dont' know what to do to restore it - but man, did it bring back memories. When my parents first moved us to Northern Minnesota when I was a kid - I learned how to cook on this thing. (And I'm not THAT old...)

First - thanks everyone for your kind words. However - I agree with some others opinions and it just wasn't very smart to order chicks in the first place. We were just reassured they would be fine - and since our first ones were - I was seduced by the excitement of baby chicks with great prices...all common sense thrown out the window.. I learned a valuable lesson.

Here are photo's of my chicks I received in our first order. They are Cochin Bantams. However - I have 2 little chicks that I'm not sure what they are. Maybe their a mixed breed - I don't know.
First - is Little Peep - he's towards the bottom of the page - You could tell when we got them he must of been older - because wing feathers were already coming in - and you can see by the 2nd photo - he's got tail feathers now too. But this little chick is about 1/3rd the size of the others. Black legs..and his toes are yellow, dark beak and dark skin.
Oh..his head is shaped different too. It's more bird like - not as wide as the other chickens. AND he doesn't sound like the other chicks. His cheep is different. Now I have a little buff one too that looks just like him shape and is small too - not as small...maybe only 1/2 the size of the others. But she's pale feet/skin. But she has that same bird like head and cheeps like My Little Peep does. (We call her Rosie she's photo below) I do however have a very fun group of colors.

of course I don't know the real sexes - we just guess. We're not very good at it. We have a Boy Cat named Chris - and we use to have a girl cat named Bob. =)

Oh...and I threw in the photo of Penguin. I just thought he deserved an "Awwww..." He's so cute! =)

Hope you all don't mind the photo's. In the last group - photo # 8 you can see how much smaller Little Peep is compared to the others.

Picture 7 is Junior. He's hysterical. Probably the silliest chicken I've ever had. He loves to check out everything - very curious little guy. Always comes running as soon as he hears my voice. Little Peep is just cute. (one of the photo's doesn't do him justice) But he is probably the least friendliest. Don't know if it's because he's so small or what. He's spunky and full of personality - just wants nothing to do with the human.

Can't wait to see photo's. My hair is anything but desireable - and when I wear it up in a pony tail - well, my kids don't call it a pony tail - they
said it's more like a "chicken butt". couldn't help but think that when I read about it's fleshy bump.

my two cents on buying/shipping chicks. sellers should know better and have better policies, buyers should know better and pay attention to local/regional weather before buying, post office should show more care when handling live chicks. lots of directions to point fingers. bottom line, whomever initiates an action needs to accept responsibility for its final outcome and use intelligence to ensure a positive, aka desired, result. sorry, this a paraphrase of what I used to tell my data processing students.

I have no idea what is going on in the coop with the hatching going on..she is setting tight. I have seen only one half of an egg shell..nothing else. I do not bother a hen on her last days of hatching. I figure I will find out all in good time. I took the NYD chicks off heat. They are pretty much all feathered out. I am getting them ready for outside living. Having them in the house is driving me crazy. Even if they are in the basement. I can't get rid of the dust. I ripped out all the vent covers and vacuumed them out trying to get rid of it today.
