Good evening...shortly I will be going to jail. Yup--my friend Peggy fired a "warning shot" at her vacating room mate and they took her off to the jail. Her friends are coming here to pick me up and we have to go to the jail and talk to the deputy!
So she just called me and I have to run...I will fill you in with the info when I get back!

how many trees do you tap? We have 4 silver maples that we tap- we didn't tap trees last year due to the funny temperature swings but hoping to do so this year. We use 2 small burners(from the turkey fryers) with stainless steel kettles to cook the sap in outside on our open deck until we are close to finishing the batch, then we bring it into the kitchen and finish on the stove.

we tap 6 trees now but have dozens of maples not yet big enough to tap. Our biggest year we made a little over 2 gallons of syrup. so we are small time, but it is something the whole family can help create and work together on.

I have also tapped walnut trees for a different tasting syrup. It is closer to 50 to 1 for the sap.

this year I will be going electric to cook as I am way ahead on my budget payment on my barn electricity

the hatchery is trying to please a customer.. sure it was a gamble,, and everybody lost.. i know,, I know,, the chicks lost the most.. I just said it is not all the hatcheries fault.. whom ever ordered the chicks is just as much to fault.. the post office loads all packages onto a truck and hits the road.. I don't think there is any policy in place to offer special handling to any type of package.. it is up to the sender to insure the safety of their shipment.. I don't make these rules.. that is just how it is.. if a person does not want this kind of result,, don't order chicks in the off season..
