Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good AM, TerriO, talk about excitement !!!!!!!! I agree with Unka and the rest,, I would not paint the stove .. Nickel is notorious for "peeling" . IDK how to fix it.. I would break off the curled up pieces, but I am not saying you should do that.. the plain casting can be cleaned really nicely with a paint stripper mounted in a drill.. that is how I cleaned up my tractor parts,, rusty manifold, engine block, etc. . It will take the rust and paint off right down to shiny metal in short time and much faster and cleaner than a wire wheel. be cleaner, I do not mean less dusty.. remember, you are removing rust,, it has to go somewhere.. in my case , it was all over me.. I bought the paint strippers at Fleet & Farm.. Not real expensive, and they do not disintagrate like the wire wheels do.. they are a rigid type material made by 3M.. a good outside job for in the summer months.. and set the stove in the shade,, Not as I did and set up shop in the sun.. Duuhh,,, then I would paint only the plain cast iron with stove black.. If the parts are going to get hot, like the side panels of the fire walls.. fire the stove up OUTSIDE the building because the first time that stove black gets hot it smokes and really stinks.. get the stove as hot as you can.. I would not paint the enameled , colored parts.. I would not do anything with the cooking surface except clean it.. then temper it like DrH said. back in the day, I can remember my father cleaning up the cooking surface when it was hot, by balling up a piece of regular waxed paper and wiping it all over.. It smoked and gave off an odor,, but it was a nice odor.. this is just what I would do/not do.. it is your stove,, do what you want.. UnkaDan,, I decided to go and get some more of those racks.. I figured out a way to make a removable fence for the garden.. with moving the garden up here closer to the house, we will have to protect it from the birds,, especially the geese.. they make good weeders, but make no distinction between grass and lettuce.. now I have to decide if I want to unload the racks I have,, or go buy another trailer.. I think I will try driving to the spot where I am going to build the peacock pen in 4WD.. If I get stuck, Annie will have to pull me out .. She just HATES doing that .. Annie tried to get a urine sample from the pup.. He of course acted like the aluminum pie plate was red hot and would not let her get close to HIS equipment.. So she called the vet today and made an appt for 2:45PM.. I am guessing the vet is going to extract what she needs .. The last time I took the pup to the vet, I had to llift him into the Blazer.. I hope he doesn't bite me when I try it this time.. he was only 35 pounds last time.. he is almost full grown, now.. ......jimwhostillhasafacebeforegoingtothevet.........
Awesome ideas! I would be ok leaving it natural medal if I can get it cleaned up. Great to know what the peeling medal is... nickel. There is lots of steel and cast iron. It even still has ash in it. Being as my husband is 42, and it wasn't used while he's been around, that some old ash! (My hubby grew up in this house.) I'll have to work on getting the white cleaned up too. This old stove won't be fired up. It will be a piece of furniture. But it least if I don't paint it and stuff, it still has the ability TO be used as a stove in the future. She really is a beauty.

It is time for the next egg check before they freeze. If it gets any colder I might have to put on socks.
socks ?? what are they ?

I have to go brave the cold in just a few minutes, too.. the heaters have been doing well for the birds this winter.. keeping them in liquid water is the biggest challenge, but that will be ending soon.. about another week and things should begin to warm up..

Cind, not sure what you meant by missed something. Now what did I say? And yeah, I was talking about that fire the other night. So glad the smoke didn't make it down by you. That poor roo is really gonna have a cold keester now, the poor guy! I bet he won't be coming outside today.

Thanks Bigfam. Yeah, no dementia quite yet............. I still want that stove.............

Back to laundry. Keep warm, all!

I swear TO you could be doing a reality show,,,where's FT?... this latest story has hillbilly written all over it!

as for the stove,,,,I used a lot of Naval Jelly (now girlz,,,,this an actual purchased product) when doing the stove restorations. Moving the units around usually does more harm than good,,the jelly just requires lots of newspapers to catch the mess,,,,then the stove black or polish for the cast iron parts (as Jim suggested) the rest can for now just get cleaned up. There are products called Krud Kutterer (Menards) that work really well for a multitude of tasks, environmentally friendly and safe around kids and dogs. At some point you could remove all of the plated parts and get them redone,,,speandy but the only way to go for a perfect restoration.

Jim, I'm sure Annie likes giving you a yank when you're stuck,,,go for it

and btw,,,Jim showed up in flipflops and shorts yesterday when we picked up that 1st load of racks,,,umm hmm

what color hollyhocks do you have? we have a deep purple- looks just about black and one that is raspberry in color

Before I forget... Terri how are the new specs?

As to the stove, it's probably been here since the house was built. Never been outside. No cracks. This house was built by a Haas, then sold to a Haas, bought by another Haas'. So family essentially always here, along with the stove. I can't find a date on it. Supposed to be on the gauge on the front.
We have the same stove in our basement. I wish I knew how the heck they got it down there! Our kids are 5th generation in this house. Unless they moved the stove here from somewhere else, our house was built in the early 30's. Maybe that will help you with the age?
