Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Evening All...just wondering if the Spring vigor from the roos that is important to really good hatches is even considerd with the dead of winter issues everyone is having?

good point bigz

someone asked about Prince feeds, I have recently talked to a couple of breeders in the state that are feeding Prince "game bird layer pellets" 19% protein, these guys have been at it a long time I would trust their judgement.

I use rabbit pellets from them now and years ago I was a Prince dealer never had problems with their products

Ok thanks! I'm not sure why I thought I would have heard of this feed, since I haven't heard of a quarter of things chicken related. Now I know.

hello everyone! Hope you all stayed fairly warm today. I agree with everyone Terri- I wouldn't eat it. Looks pretty scary to me. I have a butchered a lot of different animals, and I've never seen anything like that before, and if I did, it would be thrown in the dumpster.

I think my DD6 is a chick hypnotist. She picks up "her" chick, and lays it back. She says, "like a baby", and it goes right to sleep! She sits it up and it opens it eyes, lays it back and it sleeps again. So cute! What was not so cute was getting pooped on by one of the chicks. DS3 did not find it so funny either! Poor kid

Our furnace quit working last night at around 11:30pm. By the time we woke up this morning it was 55 in here. Good thing they could come first thing, and it looks like we will be buying a new one..
Well today was DH and my 11th anniversary. We celebrated on Thursday, and it is a good thing, because he was so busy today he only came in for an hour for supper. Crazy how fast the years go by..
Hope you all have a good night

With shipped eggs every thing has to be considered. Weather, shipping conditions, time of year, handling and processing. Shipped eggs is a risky business.

I hear you there Judge! Can't believe I have been with DH for over 22 years.....

Thanks for the compliment Denise, the photo work was done by Amyable. I provided the ducklings.

That chicken will not hurt the dogs in any way, heck dogs eat roadkill deer that is half rotten so that chicken should be just fine. Better than tossing it into the trash completely.

German Chocolate cake is baked and cooling off (unfortunately no recipe for one in The Cake Bible). I think I am going to make some Cajun Roasted Cauliflower for tomorrow too. We do not eat enough cauliflower and this sounded like a good way to get people to eat it.

Made pulled BBQ pork, baked sweet potatoes and peas for dinner.... yummy.

Congrats on the anni Judge! Way to go! Not many folks stay together anymore. May you enjoy many additional years. Cute about your kids and the chicks! I remember that well!
I am of the mine to get rid of the butchered "weird" bird. Any idea about cooking it for a good time and feeding it to the dogs? I did get my program to fix the pics a bit...Hey CC, BL4 or Cind...can you find me a link to send to the state vet? That would be awesome! Thanks in advance...

I think I would send an email with an ATTN: to this doc and let them know what you found. Should not be a big deal. Perhaps you should freeze the bird until they get back to you (save the liver and all the 'parts' if you can too).

Oh Vicki--You are so wonderful! Your "farm" sounds like mine! Many of my critters were/are rescue animals too...it just seems that once they are here they get all healed and start making babies! That is how I got into my present experiment of making black and brown capped ducks!

OK friends--I NEED your help now....I had to butcher another meatie today and I found strange things and I really want some opinions on this! Here are the pics I took. FIrst I thought it was odd that the wing had a very swollen top part (I dont have a pic of this) I get the bird all plucked up and I cut open the Top part of the wing where it is all swollen...it appears that there is an enclosed cyst there (smelly, cheesy stuff) Then I see a bit of bone sticking out near the lower joint...maybe an injury?
OK--I get past that and I draw the bird out. Here is a pic of the liver with a pen for comparison:

Unfortunately I had to take the pics with my phone, send them to my son who then sent them to my computer; the quality is not great!
What is the deal with this great big liver? It is probably DOUBLE the size of the one from yesterday! I should have weighed it...

Now is a really odd thing I found in the same bird. This is a picture of the stuff I pulled out. I decided to cut the bird into pieces (glad I did cause then I found this) because I was not going to consume that wing with the cyst in it.

This is the split breast. Right down along the keel bone I saw something odd. There was some white material that was kind of stringy. I reminded me of cooked chicken but real dry. Places had a bit of a greenish tinge. On the left you can see the hole I got it out of. Then I sliced along the keel bone on the right side and got a whole bunch out of that side! It didnt have any smell at all and felt kind of spongy. The only thing I can liken it to is the weird feathery "lung things" in a lobster. (weird I know) It was INSIDE the bird not under the skin like a breast blister would have been.

OK--does anyone have any ideas on this? Three things in one bird that I have never seen before...and I have butchered many birds...please advise if I should even eat this bird?
Thanks a bunch!!!! TerriOnotwantingtopoisonherfamily
Hi Terri- I googled green meat by breast bone, and it gave a lot of articles on it. Not sure if it is the same, but maybe worth a look? They called it deep pectoral myopathy or green muscle disease.
