Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well- I finally got them on the porch. So far they seem to be enjoying the room to play.
It used to be such a nice porch....

Does anyone know about a guy in Marshfield, WI that does breeding? His farm name is Empire Family Farm and I found the last name of Sternweis. He has many breeds. Any info would help. I don't want to invest in poor quality chicks.
Yep, bought 6 chicks from him last July. Two died with in a couple of weeks, one was a rooster I gave away and the other 3 are still here doing well. I should say these weren't day olds, all were about a month old when I picked them up. He let us check out his entire set up. Saw several dead chicks in the brooders, not very clean IMO. I should have known better than to come home with what I did. But, I was wanting some breeds that are hard to find so I got them anyway. Others may have had different luck or thoughts on him.

good morning,, soon will be heading outside to start ripping planks for rafters..

those of you who know me know that I am not a big fan of lights for heat.. regular incandescent are OK, for small brooders.. I use a 60W in my fish tank chick TV.. but the large "heat bulbs" are not .. IMHO.. they are not cheap to buy, and they do not last long , generally.. a small inexpensive electric heater is by far more energy efficient.. you can buy them for about the cost of 2 or 3 heat bulbs, but they will last for years.. IMHO

chicks do not need 95 F heat.. I start all of mine at about 80F and that is where it stays..
I do much brooding right outside in my brooder pens..I think I have posted pictures of these..
I built a brooder hood that I put into one end of the pen so the chicks can go under it or on top of it or ignore it altogether.. depending on how old they are..

still having focus trouble .. so I am outta here..

x2....I have used 60w and 100w and never had a problem, but my brooders are small (20 chicks or less). I also use fish tanks so my DD13and DD11 can view from all angles. My neighbor uses heat bulbs and it seems his chicks are too warm in his large brooder (a cow water tank). He also losses some each week unlil week 5or 6?

They look really happy to have more room..good job!!

I have blue/black/splash, these are about 75% English type so will be nice and big and fluffy. I just hatched them on New Years so it will be a bit yet before they are ready to lay.
Casie, I am interested in you Ameraucanas. Do you have a Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Roo over your two hens?
Delisha, I thought Foley's wife went back to work full time, and he was going to stop selling chicks except a select few on auction? Were you able to buy day olds? BLRW?

Good morning all! Gee--it looks like I am having a party here on Thursday of Friday huh?

The hostess is always the last to know...LOL! Thursday is better for me. I have a Dr appt on Friday at 8:30 so if you arent planning on getting here until 10 or 10:30 Friday would be OK too. You guys decide what works and let me know when you are coming! (how's that for party planning?)

I gave Tommy his water today and is foot feathers promptly spilled it!

I had to change his papers AGAIN! I cant wait for it to get warmer outside so the dogs can be in the kennel. Then I can let him walk around more. I feel bad that he has to stay in the dog kennel for his own safety. Right now he is playing with his ball. His new trick is to kick it! Rather funny to watch. Me and the kids put mealies in it yesterday so I think he is telling me that it is empty?

One of my goats is looking like she will have her baby/ies soon. This one is a pretty good mama so I hope she does well. She is pretty old though and only has one teat left that works...might have a baby goat in the house too!

Jim that is funny about the childcare provider! Sometimes... What was very coincidental is that just when I was reading about you fixing her house up my daughter said if I am going to have more kids than the two I am going to have to put on an addition! HMMMM....

I am toying with the idea of making my laying coop into a divided coop for a while. I dont have enough places for the birds I want to separate. The dog kennels worked OK last year but ended up pretty smelly. I do have the new panels to make more outside runs but they are frozen into the ground right now. Shoulda put them right into place when I got them I guess!

Well, gotta run to town while I can; when I used to do daycare I took 6 to the store with me...I always got compliments. Of course we sang the rules all the way there! I might have to try and remember that song!
Later and have a great day! TerriOwishingshehadaprettycooptopaint
