Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Gee those Breda chickens are pretty .... congrats!

CS.... Glad you weren't "lost" long!

Jim... looks like that pen is coming along slow but sure.

Cool about the moose. It may sound pricey but that's allot of meat! I think I would have tried to get it myself.

Gee I hate this new set up!

Night All!

Hope you don't find a buried bird in another month Jim. The other day I was at the thrift store with Cartman (his real name is Logan, for those unaware that DrH is responsible for the Cartman moniker.) There were big snow cliffs hanging off the edge of the roof; I kept Cartman to the inside just in case one decided to let go.

Oh, BigFam, I don't often have my mind in the gutter, but when I do I owe it to you.

Hey Unk, are we gonna be treated to moose at the Bash???

Thanks for all the congrats. Terri, who knows what the little peanut is. Everyone and I mean everyone wants a girl. There hasn't been a girl born on my side of the family for 17 years! 7 boys in a row. This one has me bloated already, and carrying high, but I carried Logan high too.

We could start a baby pool at the Bash.

I just started setting eggs aside for the Easter hatch. At TSC last night Julie, to my amazement, resisted the Runner ducklings and will hold out for the Pekins she wants so badly. Never seen her show such restraint!

Our family is the same way. After the 2 boys we got our girl, but everyone else kept having boys, so she has no little girls to play with. She wanted a sister, but no such luck for her. She has 2 older brothers, and one younger, so she is the only princess in the family

good early AM..

first off, don't ever try to eat a chocolate e'claire while reading the posts.. If you do, make sure you have plenty of napkins and start eating from the end where they inject the filling..

I must have missed a post about the moose costing money ?? isn't the damaged car inough to pay for it ? Not a bad price for the meat, though.. we just bought a steer and had it butchered.. lotsa $$$$ went into the freezer.. but it was a young/small guy and does he taste good and so far the steaks were tender..

I am dead tired.. had a few comments while reading about 20 posts.. can't recall any of them..

won't need a "root beer" to get to sleep tonight..

DD#2 did something to my puter earlier tonight.. It is way much faster.. I am going to try uploading a picture to see if that is any faster..

yup, that was waaaay more faster..
these are a couple of the spreaders/ceiling joists installed.. there will be 5 of them in all.. one every four feet.. the wire sections will fit between them .. (I hope)

soon I will show you how I am going to make my barrel nests for the birds, ..

the picture will enlarge if you click it with the mouse. for those of you that are not aware.. there is a statement about it when you are uploading your pictures,, but that is no help to the people reading the posts.. It is like finding instructions on how to open a package inside of the package..

Happy Sunny (at least Lakeshore NE WI is!) Sunday!!

I have a very quick newbie question! I can't seem to find back far enough, someone had posted some great info on keeping the 'bator at temp/humidity. I can't seem to find it! But basically, I'm looking for tips on mine! It's a simple styro with a fan and egg turner....(from fleet farm, my romantic Christmas present from my DH) I've had it set up since last Tuesday (five days) after day two (with NO eggs) it was keeping constant 99.5-99.8* and 55-56% humidity. Now two mornings in a row I wake up at 5am (after checking at 10pm when I go to bed) and it's 101*-101.5* and in the 20/30% for humidity???? Am I soft boiling my future chicks??? URGH!!!!!

I think my hair is going to fall out and I'm going to be the crazy chicken (instead of cat) lady!!!

Any help/ideas/prozac/xanax would be appreciated :)

Mornin' sunshine (and everyone else`hehehe)

sorry Sunshine, can't be of any help. Closest I have gotten to incubating eggs is shoving a couple eggs under my broodie last year and winding up with 1 mutt hen named Noodle. (Who is now huge btw and laying a pigeon egg!!!)

Seriously, hope it isn't too rough on you "southern" folks and your chickies.

Great job JIM!!!! Wow, I wish you lived closer. I could really use your brain to help me figure out how to put a roof over my run. (trouble figuring it out with roof angles on coop, etc.)

Ok, rewording my earlier question. How many of you do NOT vaccinate for Cocci and has anyone had a problem with it? Refresher~I will have 4 chicks that will arrive innoculated for Merek's and already have 2 bags of pro/pre biotics Nutrena chick crumbles (unmedicated). Thought these would do the trick, that and close monitoring, keeping them clean, what do you Gurus think?

Jim is the incubator guy..He will help you out.

I have one of those too and they are hard to hatch out of when you do not have the unit in an area where temps and humidity are a constant. Drafts are a big changer. I ended up setting it up on a card table surrounded on three sides with cardboard taped to the table. I cut the cardboard about 8 inches high, and slid the unit inside the surround. I placed glasses of water around the unit and not inside to regulate humidity. Make sure you are using a thermometer that has been calebrated. The stuff that comes with tthe unit does not work. Good work on getting temps regulated before you place eggs inside.

good sunny but cold (-9º) morning folks,

sunshine I suggest you sleep in a few more hour b4 checking the incubator (Jim will help, when he does I suggest you follow his instructions to the letter)

vicki, I haven't used medicated feed or shots and don't intend to this year, give the chicks some grass/weeds with soil attached when they are ummm a week old,,,this gets the gut working. I will feed some FF to the chicks this year early on, not as the sole diet but as an addition. I raised 50+ chicks last year not one died from disease

today "Joe" the original BCM roo goes to jail and his replacement gets the run of the big coop, we'll see how this plays out. Last summer when I had to catch Joe he flew through a window pane and he still remembers that, very hard to catch now.

the Sportsman gets fired up and adjusted today, did this when I got it but need to do the humidity thing and get ready for chicks,,,

Vicki: Ive used medicated feed for the first couple months-and made sure the chicks were exposed to dirt fro coop while still on the medicated feed before switching feed.

Jim: Wow! Wish Ihad those skills available over here! I Would really like to build a more protected run for my flock (and extend it).

JJ: I have also thought about bee keeping, my biggest concern-we already have bear in our front yeard and would prefer to not bring them i closer. I have heard that there are people that will come out and set up the bee colonies with electrical fencing, provide you with honey, and you get a property tax write off.

I have also wanted to look into bees, but maybe when the kids are older. Don't want them too near the house with kids running around. But we have a great property for something like that. Someday!
Well I ordered the fan for the incubator. Would be here by Wednesday so we can get it hooked up nd temps regulated good before eggs next weekend. So excited. Thanks friends that are donating to the cause!
Had my girlfriend and her kids over this weekend to play with the big girls. My coop needs. Good scrubbing...hopefully next weekend, with the warmer weather.
Otherwise working on seeds some more today. Trying to get a good weather forecast to see where this storm is going. Keep hearing differing reports... Have a great sunny Sunday everyone.
